Can you get the C-Difficile virus for just 1 day?

I only ask because my mother went to visit someone in the hospital and when she came back she had all the symptoms of that. But it was just for 1 day then she was fine. The news here is advertising the c-difficile virus like crazy and they say its found in hospitals so we were wondering this. anybody know?
Answer: Probably not, the reason so many in the hospital develop it is because they are taking antibiotics. Taking antibiotics disrupts the normal bacteria in the colon and allows the c-difficile bacterium to take hold and make the person very ill. Always wash your hands after you've had a visit to the hospital.

Bill Shakespeare is infected with C. DIFFICILE. Which is definitely true:?

a. Bills body is immediately producing an immune response b. C. difficile will be present in Bill c. C. difficile will cause abnormal body functions d. Bill must be treated for signs of diarrhea
Answer: D I know diarrhea is the main concern with C. Dif infections. Not a because the C. Dif toxin can inhibit an immune response. Not b because C. Dif produces a toxin that causes diarrhea, so the bacteria itself may not be there. Choice C is really vague, is diarrhea an abnormal body function? I think it's a normal response to infection, so this answer choice doesn't really make sense.

C difficile, I was hospitalized for it in Feb do you know about its course?

I was in isolation for it and sent home assuming I am in the clear Since that day I have to be close to the bathroom in the mornings. Its often diaherra or pretty close to it. Its only once or twice a day, not like it was when I was really affected. Have you heard of this? Not normal I dont find, I mentioned it to my doctor he says they dont usually follow up on it very long.
Answer: Were you treated with metronidazole or something of that nature? If so, you SHOULD be in the clear. They can't test you again for awhile because you would still come up positive. Even though the bacteria have been killed, the TOXIN is still present. The toxin is what is tested for in the lab, and what is causing your current diarrhea. When the toxin has been cleared and your bowels have time to replenish the normal flora that's supposed to be there, you will start having normal bowel movements. It's still going to be a pain in the a*& for awhile yet. (Sorry for the lame pun...it makes some of my patients laugh.) Take care!

How long am I able to pass on C difficile if the diaherra has stopped?

Answer: Unfortunately you can still pass C Diff on after symptoms are over if you are colonized. The only way to tell if you have gotten it out of your system is to be retested. It's really difficult to get rid of and very common to have living in your gut at low levels. The best you can do is wash your hands well after using the bathroom and before cooking (30 seconds - wet hands, soap hands, suds up, start count - front, back, between the fingers - sing Row, row, row your boat 3 times to count, then rinse). Also, if you are sexually active, you can pass it on via oral sex. ie having someone go down on you, if you are colonized. Sorry it isn't better news.

Theres been an outbreak in my region and people in the hospitals are dying from it. Ive been seeing it in the newspapers. What is it exactly? How do you get it? Well, I wasnt freaking out, so theres no need to tell me to relax.
Answer: Clostridium difficile is a bacteria which causes infection of the gastrointestinal tract(mostly colon). It causes a disease called as PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS ENTEROCOLITIS; meaning it causes a type of inflammation causing a membrane like appearance of the lumen of the bowel and diarrhoea. Mostly it is caused by use of antibiotics which destroy all the commensal bacteria(good bacteria) of the gut causing C. difficile to invade the bowel. One can also get it by faeco-oral route (means eating or drinking contaminated water.)

C. DIFFICILE?

I work in a nursing home in laundry can i contract this c.difficile .As i come in contact with alot of clothing that is solied .If so how can i protect myself from it and what other air borne bacteria should i be concerned about as i can get no straight answer from anyone as to what to do.Need some direction from a health care worker Thanks for all your good answers now my question to you all the dead skin the i see when sorting all the soiled clothing clothing will that cause me any issues if i dont wear a face mask.
Answer: Prevention: When hospital (ICU) outbreaks of Enterobacter infections occur, isolation and barrier protection should be implemented. Isolation precautions should also be implemented when a multidrug-resistant organism is isolated. Hand washing or use of alcohol or other disinfecting hand gels by health care workers between contacts with patients prevents transmission of these and other nosocomial bacteria. This is particularly true in ICUs. Prior antibiotic administration is a major factor for colonization and secondary infections with these multiple-antibiotic–resistant organisms. Clinicians are well advised to avoid unnecessary administration of antimicrobial agents or to avoid unnecessary prolonged administration. For surgical prophylaxis, administration of antibiotics for longer than 24 hours rarely is justifiable. Education programs for physicians and hospital personnel regarding risk reduction for transmission of Enterobacter species and other nosocomial pathogens should be implemented in every hospital. This is usually the responsibility of the infection control team Please see the web pages for more details on Clostridium difficile.

I am being treated for C Difficile and cannot have milk products?

or wheat prod. I need to know what foods are easily digested. Sparky
Answer: I only hope you are also consulting with a nutritionist as well as your doctor with this problem. Most likely you are being given some drugs for this, when you really need to address your intestinal flora. RAW Fermented milk products are not like the typical pasteurized milk products that you find in stores that are bad for you even if you didn't have this bacterial issue. Most of the time this type of bacterial problem is due to the use of antibiotics destroying the intestinal flora that keeps C Difficile in check. Wheat products contain lots of phytic acid unless they are soaked overnight like they should be before making it into food. The phytic acid binds to minerals and removes them from your body. And yes you need the minerals. Infections use up your minerals. Fermented foods, a good probiotic, etc. will go a long ways to fixing your problem. The allopatic approach to medicine causes doctors to make every attempt to kill the bacteria and ignore the host. good luck to you

C difficile I contracted through the hospital how do I rid my body of it?

Answer: You didn't catch it FROM the hospital, you caught while IN the hospital. Everyone has C. difficile in their bowels - it's considered to be normal flora. Clostridium difficile is an organism that is closely related to the organisms that cause botulism, gas gangrene, and tetanus. All of these organisms produce toxins (poisons) and all of them have the ability to form spores and go into a sort of hibernation when the environment becomes too difficult to survive in. Normally, your bowel contains only a small number of C. difficile organisms - they are greatly outnumbered by the presence of the other types of bowel bacteria. If a patient is given antibiotics, these other organisms may be killed off, but the C. difficile will survive by forming spores. Once the antibiotics clear out, the C. difficile will "hatch out" and it then finds itself in an unpopulated bowel. That means it can start reproducing and take over because there are not enough of the other types of organisms left to suppress it. When the C. difficile population reaches a high enough level, the amount of toxin it produces will rise to a high enough level to cause a patient to become very sick. So, the answer is not to give the patient more antibiotics. The answer is to repopulate the bowel with a good dose of normal bowel bacteria so they can grow and suppress the C. difficile. Ingesting probiotic foods, such as live culture yoghurt, may help. However, your doctor may give you a very strong antibiotic, such as vancomycin, in an attempt to kill the C. difficile. Vancomycin will, however, kill off the rest of the bacteria, so you'll still end up with a barren bowel and some of the C. difficile are likely to survive and continue to cause problems.

IV Ancef Safety in Those with a History of C. DIFFICILE Diarrhea?

If a person had C. difficile diarrhea after 7 days of Ceftin, is it safe to give 1gm of Ancef IV during surgery? Thanks
Answer: Sneezy, No, not completely safe. Ancef is a cephalosporin antibiotic which is effective against many possible bacteria, but can sometimes result in C. difficile pseudomemranous enterocolitis. Its use should be considered after consideration of all benefits and risks for each patient. Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents, including cefazolin (Ancef), and may range in severity from mild to life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to consider this diagnosis in patients who present with diarrhea subsequent to the administration of antibacterial agents. Treatment with antibacterial agents alters the normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of Clostridia. Studies indicate that a toxin produced by Clostridium difficile is a primary cause of “antibiotic-associated colitis”. After the diagnosis of pseudomembranous colitis has been established, therapeutic measures should be initiated. Mild cases of pseudomembranous colitis usually respond to drug discontinuation alone. In moderate to severe cases, consideration should be given to management with fluids and electrolytes, protein supplementation, and treatment with an oral antibacterial drug clinically effective against C. difficile colitis.
