Can my mac get a virus from running windows on boot camp or parallel?
Im just trying to asses the risk. I understand that the window software can obviously get a virus without a virus protection service, but can it somehow infect all my mac information and software? I dont want to install windows if it could crash my whole system.
Answer: The answer would really depend on what virus is in the Windows operating system. Whether it is a MAC or a Windows computer dual booting Linux, it opens a door for viruses to cross over to the other operating system. Most Windows Viruses will not affect MAC or Linux since it does not have the same type of files that are attacked, but you still need virus protection for MAC and Linux to be on the safe side. But also be aware that goes both ways, what ends up on MAC or Linux can cross over to Windows also.

How do you know if you have a virus on a mac?
Is there any Mac viruses, and how do you know if youve got one?
Answer: Sort of correct answers so far. Can you get a virus on a Mac running MacOS X? It is possible but someone has to write a virus for MacOS X. There hasn't been a Mac virus since 2006 and then only 49 Macs got it. It is more difficult to infect a Mac since all software installs (including trojans & malware) need an admin password to be installed. If you are greedy and easily duped you can download & install the 7 Mac trojans out there in fake & illegal software downloads. Otherwise you are safe.

If I plug an external HD with a PC virus into a MAC will it also get the virus?
Or does it need to be a Mac virus to transfer over. Im not sure there is one without running a search and my PC is broken so I cant do it. Am getting a new MAC and need to transfer and backup files.
Answer: Very unlikely.
Most PC Viruses are executables e.g. .exe, .com, .vbs, .scr, .pif
Executables for PC cannot be run in MAC environment.
However, there are cross-platform viruses that work normally in both PC and MAC environment.
Most cross-platform viruses known were harmless proof-of-concept written by computer researchers.
Cross-platform applications/environments such as Openoffice , Java etc. can be the vectors of these virus attacks.
For example:
http://www.zdnet.com.au/openoffice-macro-worm-exposes-bad-bunny-339277689.htm
"While the virus has not been seen in the wild, nor is it likely to affect customers"
http://www.symantec.com/about/news/release/article.jsp?prid=19980819_02
"This virus is not "in the wild," and it is not known to have infected end users or corporations."
Here is a list of antivirus software for MAC:

Some of them can check for PC viruses too.

Is there a MAC VIRUS that fills up my HD>?
I have a Mac Mini for one year with a 150g HD. Suddenly today, when I was handbraking a movie it said my hd was full. I dint think this was possible. so, i assumed it was a virus.
Answer: No its just you filling up your hard drive with 1.5GB of movie. If you have had your Mac mini for a whole year then it is quite likely that you have downloaded lots of songs, photos, made some music, movies and heaps of other stuff that takes up lots of space on your hard drive when you add it all together.
Click on your documents folder in Finder then click on the individual folders in Documents and do a Command + I which will give you the folder size in MB or GB, do that to each folder in Documents then go and do it to your movies and pictures folders and all all those file sizes up and see what you get.
There are NO Mac viruses.

Can a virus from my external harddrive spread into my new mac and cause trouble?
Ok so ive got this malicious microsoft-ic virus that somehow got into my external harddrive. Its called 32Willy or Willy32 if Im not wrong. If I put this hardware into my mac, will the virus cause trouble since macs are supposedly not able to get ruined because of PC viruses? Thank you all.
Answer: No windows virus/spyware/malware can ever do anything to a mac. Ever.
There are a handfull of viruses for mac, most of which you need to execute by double clicking and typing your password yourself. The only malware for mac that can sneak in are trojans, but those are harder to get because an infected mac application would have to make contact with the same application on another mac. I have had my g4 unprotected for 5+ years and nothing has happened.
The "mac is unpopular there for not many viruses are written for it" argument is complete BS. With Mac OS 9 back when the mac market share was around 5% there were 500+ viruses for the OS. Today with Mac OS X and a mac market share of 10% you think there would be double the amount of viruses. There are in fact maybe 10 application specific (not OS) trojans for the modern mac and only a handfull of viruses much less then 500.

Does My Mac Need Virus Protection Software?
Just bought a new iMac w/10.6.6 OS... and I know Macs are unlikely virus targets but... has anyone ever had a Mac virus? Does anyone have favorite anti-virus software they like?
Answer: There are no MacOS X viruses, you can't get one. The few Mac trojans that exist require you to be gullible (you won a free iTunes gift card just click below to claim it, or you need our software to view HD porn) or greedy (torrent of Photoshop). The only way to install malware on a Mac is by downloading it and installing it with your admin password. There are more reports of slowdowns & damaged files from Mac antivirus software than from any released malware.

Has anyone with a Mac gotten a virus from mangafox?
I love to go there, but my last pc completely crashed from a virus from there and from my brothers downloading. I just got a new Mac laptop, and was wondering if mangafox had Mac viruses too. :/
I dont like onemanga as much. If they do, I heard that Apple repairs your computer if you have the protection plan and get a virus. Is that true?
Can I continue to be addicted by that glorious website? :3
Answer: Managafox looks like a trusted site, I could not find any bad downloads there. Your brother's downloading from somewhere else probably got your computer infected. Mac can get infected, but you have to download and install something to get infected on a mac. I don't think you have to worry about that site. But if you do a lot of downloading to your mac, you could get on of the free anti-virus scanners they have for Mac's. You can get one at apple.com Go to downloads, network and security, you will find some there. Once infected on a Mac, it can be tough to remove, so just use trusted sites. I looked at the apple protection plan, it says nothing about Apple doing a free repair, if you get infected. You can call them and check, but I'm sure the answer will be they do not.

How do you terminate a MAC VIRUS?
My husbands computer just received a virus. He was searching for a website to easily download the Maryland State Tax form 502. This is because we were having trouble printing it directly from the Maryland Comptroller website. The computer then clearly notified him that he received two Trojan viruses. Have you ever heard of this problem and if so, how did you fix it?
Answer: You can go to apple.com then go to download, then network and Security, they have several security programs for the Mac. If you husband did not click on anything or install anything you are probably not infected. Almost all the Mac malware has to be installed. What you had some spyware or adware that was trying to trick him. But to be safe clean your browser. Delete internet history, and anything else that like cookies. To be on the safe side download one of the free anti-virus programs from apple and run a scan. It is hard to infect a mac. But it is happening more often. When users tell you that there a no Mac virus and only a few trojans be careful. AS you found out the browser can get infected with spyware that isn't a virus or trojan.
