Answer: Well, to do it at sea level is possible, just that it takes longer. Technically, you could cheat by starting off at 1000ft and drop to deck level as you approach Mach 1. By the time you level off, you will be able to cross over into Mach 1. However, you won't be able to maintain that for long as fuel consumption will be at least 33% higher. Plus, you have to do it in a clean configuration (i.e no external stores, including fuel tanks).

Why did the F-15, F-18, and F-16 never continued with thrust vectoring?

Just wondering because I heard F-15 Active, the F-18 Harv, and F-16 Vista seemed to have done pretty well with the thrust vectoring capabilities. Why did they never tried to install it to the jets for actual combat?
Answer: The F-15, F-16 and F-18 that were so equipped did not have an airframe configuration that was designed for optimal utilization of thrusts vectoring. Once one know if the principles works, the best approach is to use what was learned on a platform that was intended to make the most of it from the get go. Modifying an existing airplane along those lines end up costing as much as the airplane itself; might as well design a new plane around it. If you compare the specifications of the thrust vectoring experimental aircraft (they were all one of, by the way), you will see that the there was some performance degradation in specific aspect, notably the maximum takeoff weight.

Answer: Join the US Navy, get into an officers program (such as OCS or the Naval Academy) which requires good/great grades and a security clearance, complete the officers program, graduate high enough to be able to select flight training as your preferred career path (which requires you pass a special physical with emphasis on good eyesight and is very competitive), pass flight training, and then complete special schools for the FA-18 Hornet and time flying a FA-18 Hornet, then you are a Naval Flight Aviator who flies F-18's. I think the Israeli Airforce and British Airforce have F-18's also, but I am not sure what the requirements are to join and be selected as pilots. I would assume it is nearly impossible in Israel.

I just went to an air show put on by the air force, and the F-18 was ear-splittingly loud! I didnt cover my ears during one pass with full afterburners on, and it broke the sound barrier, creating a massive sonic boom. Im hoping that my, along with everyone else at the shows ears arent damaged. Does anyone have an estimate on how loud these things are, and should I be concerned?
Answer: It's close to the ear damage point, but it depends on just how close you were. All you can do is hope the show's organizers took that into account when they setup the flyover. .

Why does it seem the F-18 creates more vapor when breaking the sound barrier than other jets?

It always looks like a big circular cloud. I have seen it from other jets also, but so much more often on f-18s. Is it because they usually fly in a more humid environment?
Answer: The F-18 has a lot of transsonic drag in comparison to other aircraft. Originally they wanted supersonic fighter aircraft to have as little transonic drag as possible, because of the limited power of the engines. But having short stubby wings reduces maneuverability and trimming down the fuselage means less room for things like engines and fuel. Since the F-18 has gobs of thrust, it can have those huge wings and leading edge extensions without too much sacrifice in speed (though it is still slower than some older aircraft with less thrust). This transonic drag creates huge shockwaves, which you see cooling the air to the dewpoint.

Anyone hear about and have any detail on the new stealthy F-18?

I read a small article today about a proposed stealthy F-18 to compete against the F-15 Silent Eagle. It is suppose to have 20% more thrust, more fuel capacity, conformed fuels tanks, something about a stealthier cockpit, and i think internal weapons. Does anyone know if it is going to have vectored thrust? Would that even make sense to have that on the Super Hornet since it is mostly for ground warfare now? Or would it raise the cost and weight of the aircraft?
Answer: Boeing builds both F/A-18 and F-15. It'd be competing against itself. They seem to be updating it to compete for the Swiss, Indian and Brazilian AF contracts. Conformal fuel tanks, I think are a good idea, because F/A-18 was a bit range limited from the very beginning. With stealth, it all or nothing. Either you go full stealth, like F-22, or don't bother. Partial stealth will still be visible to the radar. F/A-18 has straight engine air intake ducts, instead of hiding the engines behind the curved ones, like F-22. It has a saw tooth leading edge, and lots and lots of access doors, air inlets, and exhaust ports. All these reflect the radar energy. To make all these things stealthy, you will have to go back an redesign the whole plane, and then you will end up with F-35. To allow for vectored thrust, you will need to do major structural modifications since the loads from the engines will be acting on the airframe differently that the airframe was originally designed for.

This may be a stupid question, but why do only 4 F-18 jets fly over sporting events. The formation theyre flying in looks like theres supposed to be 2 on the left, 2 on the right, and the jet in the middle.
Answer: It seems as though they always fly F-18 aircraft. But I have seen a B-52 bomber fly overhead as well as the B-2 Stealth. My friend was in the Air Force and they flew the F-16 and he flew over a game before as well. I guess it depends on who is contacted and what the organizers want along with what is available.

The F-18 hornet takes off and land in an airbases and ships, as far as I know. What is the typical lenght for each? And what is the minimum?
Answer: Min landing/takeoff roll is determined by many factors. For takeoff, we consult our performance manual to go through the charts etc taking into account runway condition (wet or not) temperature, density altitude, gross weight and type of takeoff (afterburner or mil power). Typically the takeoff distance with a standard load ( one centerline fuel tank) here in Lemoore is 2600 feet, a little more when hot and less when cold. This being said, if we max perform the jet we can get in the air in around 1500 feet Obviously on a carrier we get airborne within 250 feet or so. For landing we can stop when light on fuel and stores within around 2700 feet however the "required" ( by our higher ranking officers) distance is 7000 feet waiverable by the boss to 6000. good to know that we can stop in under 3000 feet though in a dire situation. For landing on the boat we stop in 200 feet or so with the aid of a hook and arresting wire.

In your opinion, how could you improve the F-18 Super Hornet?

If you were given the task of improving the F-18 Super Hornet, what would you do? What could be improved? Any ways to improve this? Would you change the size of the aircraft in any way? Better engines? Now all of these improvements have to accessible and plausible. For ex you cant put engines that do not exist or something on it that would not even benefit the aircraft. Would you make a pure dogfighting stealth Hornet called the Sting Hornet or a ground attack hornet called the F-18 Attack Hornet? Just have fun and use your imagination. Skip what is yahoo answers for if i cant ask experts like you? By the way thank you for answering all of my questions(except this one) I will keep them coming as I love aviation. And I am not in the YAF I am in the YAAF get it right sir.
Answer: I would do nothing, as the Super Hornet is an improvement over the F/A-18. The F/A-18 was used in the Desert Storm to shoot down enemy aircraft and bomb ground targets on the same sortie.
