Southern authors HARPER LEE, Margaret Mitchell profiled Monday on PBS American Masters
MOBILE, Alabama — At first blush, Nelle Harper lee and Margaret Mitchell would not seem to have much in common. Different writers, vastly different backgrounds. Look closer and you will find that the two share much more than a Southern heritage.
Interview with Director Mary Murphy
My bosses would say, “No interview with Harper lee, no news.” I read the novel again after I started my own production company. Freed of the demand for news, I thought about it differently. The novel was the story, not the novelist.

What was HARPER LEE trying to tell us in To Kill a Mockingbird?
What life lessons did Harper lee try to tell her readers in her book To Kill a Mockingbird? Could you include an explanation and/or examples? Thanks so much! This helps tremendously!
Answer: In my opinion I believe that the biggest lesson that we can learn is tolerance. Atticus is a good example of refraining from judgement. Seeing that he is one if not the main hero in the novel, he sets the example of how we should all act. Differences should not keep us apart, even though they do when people judge books by their covers. I think that is why Atticus defended Tom Robinson, because he was attempting to change that.

How Does HARPER LEE show her opinions through the text in To Kill A Mockinbird?
Harper lee is said to be Scout in To Kill a Mockinbird
what are specific examples of this?
does Lee speak beneath the text in this novel? Where?
What other characters/events does Lee base off of her own personal and childhood life?
Answer: She is still alive and resists the notion of a sequel, and seems to enjoy the speculative give and take you have here.
She did go to law school but left, and that is another area to explore. The movie adaptation of Mr Finch is the greatest example of a lawyer-as-hero symbol...her own dad?
I have read that she borrowed the story device of a threesome (Calpurnia, Alexandra, Maudie helping Scout reach adulthood) from Baum's three characters - Scarecrow-Tinman-Lion. They helped Dorothy get back to Kansas, and the realiztion that "there's no place like home." Baum's wife was named Maudie? Or Maud?
The character Calpurnia was named after the wife of Julius Ceasar who tried to keep him from going to the final meeting where they killed him - he did not listen to her.
Any other authors (or scriptwriters) expand on the role of Zeebo, son of Calpurnia? She taught her son, Zeebo, to be comfortable with book-print so he could help her pastor in church. She did not teach him to just read for school or a scholarship, she was supporting her pastor.
Students in Alabama must go over this stuff over and over...
Can you get anyone in Alabama to join in this discussion?

What was HARPER LEEs purpose of writing and publishing To Kill a Mockingbird, and did she suceed?
I finished the book a month ago and now im curious on why Harper lee wrote the book. Thanks for your perspectives!!!
Answer: Sorry, but your question is a bit odd. How could you read the book and not understand why she wrote it? And, how could you think that a book has lasted this long and not have been successful?
Did she succeed in her purpose for writing it? If you weren't moved by the outrageous hopelessness of the victims of institutionalized bigotry, the courage of those who stood and still stand up against it, and the events that would change a child's view of the world and her father, then she clearly did not succeed in your case.

Harper lee created the character of Scout to narrate the story in To Kill a Mockingbird. How does this decision relate to the books theme of innocence versus evil?
Answer: Harper lee wanted to tell the story from the point of view of a child, since kids are often more innocent, more open-minded, and less judgmental than adults. Note that her father let his kids call him by his first name to teach them to see all people as equal. Atticus also didn't mind when Scout used swear words, as there is nothing evil about saying sh-- or as-, they are just words. Her uncle was evil for punishing (hitting) Scout for swearing.

How would you prove that HARPER LEE actually wrote what Truman Capote put his name on?
Librarian at my college says that we have been told Harper lee only wrote one book, but actually she also wrote much of what Capote claims to have written. How would you prove that?
Is a writing "style" definitive? Can such a "style" be emulated? Or borrowed or "rented"?
Perhaps an interview with the author(s) is possible. That may be a waste of time.
Answer: I've heard stories many times over that either that Harper lee wrote much of Truman Capotes work, or (more frequently,) that Truman Capote wrote most of "To Kill a Mockingbird".
However, if you look closely at the works of each author, you'll see that each had a different writing style. As they were friends and both writers, it is entirely possible that they shared drafts and occasionally gave one another feedback. However, To Kill a Mockingbird has a totally different writing style to say, In Cold Blood, to the point where they could not have been written by the same author.
EDIT: Wording and sentence structure are almost as definitive as ones fingerprints. Don't believe me? Try and write in the style of another author. Or would you simply rather that I wrote some pseudo-intellectual rubbish about how Harper lee slavishly spend hundreds of hours learning to mimic the style of Truman Capote, because she wasn't a successful author in her own right?

1. Harper lee presented the issue of prejudice in To Kill a Mockingbird. Give one example and discuss how it relates to racism in Alabama in the 1930s.
Answer: 'the sheriff hadn't the heart to put him in jail alongside negroes'
this is a form of prejudice as the sheriff thinks that white people shouldn't be in the same place as black people.
Alternatively, you could say that the sheriff symbolises the law and that even the law is racist. Lee has done this to demonstrate the effects of the Jim Crow Laws which were present at the time. People will follow this as they'll think the law is right.
Message: Lee shows us how prejudice and racism can be easily passed on through the sheriff.

How does HARPER LEE mock the school system in chapter 2 in " To kill a mockingbird" ?
Some critics feel that Harper lee is making a social comment about education in chapter 2? How does he do this?
Answer: First off, Harper lee is female. Secondly, you should really read the book. Her incite into the school system goes far beyond just Chapter 2. In Chapter 2, however, the teacher, Miss Caroline, is very hard on the narrator, Jean Louise Finch (Scout) because in first grade she can already read and write.
Scout's father, Atticus, has taught her to read over the years by sitting with her and reading the newspaper aloud while moving his finger across the words as he read. Atticus' cook, Calpurnia, taught Scout to write by sitting her down with a Bible verse and rewarding her improvements with an open sandwich of bread, butter, and sugar.
Miss Caroline tells Scout that she must stop these beloved pass times so that she (Miss Caroline) can repair the "damage." The slowness with which the system taught the students reading and writing (hardly until the 3rd grade) was a huge heads-up.
Also, Ms Lee practically mocks the system as she talks about the flash cards with words such as "the" "cat" "rat" "man" and the story about the talking cats that wore creative little outfits and lived under a stove. Reading this story where cats ordered chocolate malted mice to a classroom of children raised on farms was a slap in the face of the school system, I think.
