Just about the same time Prince Fielders gargantuan, nine-year, $214 million contract agreement with the Detroit Tigers set baseball jaws dropping on Tuesday -- the wows stemming from how long the contract is, the eye-popping total and that it was the Detroit Tigers shelling it out -- it got its whiff of irony by arriving on exactly the same day - By LYNN ZINSER

Answer: It's hard for me to put together or judge a list like that, as I wasn't around to see Mantle, Cobb, Fox, Ruth, etc. The only way I can judge them is by looking at stats, and those can be deceiving at times. That list looks pretty good, however I think Ken Griffey Jr. would probably make it in to my top 20, and maybe Michael Jack Schmidt, from a bias stand point...I'd probably put Ted Williams ahead of Ruth, that's about it. By the end of his career, though, Pujols will be higher on that list than #7. Maybe in the top spot, we'll see. (I'm not a Cards fan, by the way.)
And to the guy who said Bonds shouldn't be on that list: I hate Bonds, probably more than the next guy, but he was a great hitter. The steroids helped him hit for power, sure, but it doesn't help you put the bat on the ball. Bonds is one of the greatest hitters of all time, and it pains me to say that. I don't know that he's #3 all time, but he's top 10 no questions asked.
And take Frank Thomas off? You've got to be kidding me, he is one of the greatest of all time. Fact is, he should probably be higher than 14.

LEADING OFF; When the Game Is a Sideshow
Rarely has a big game been so little about the game. Thats the state of play heading into Saturdays football matchup in State College, Pa. Should someone remind Ken Griffey, Jr. that, "Theres no crying in baseball!!!"?
http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/the_sporting_blog/entry/view/65767/sadness_in_seattle_crying_in_baseball,_and_an_impending_griffey-mariners_divorce
Griffey denies he was asleep, but this is the opening many have taken to suggest its time Seattle and its erstwhile star parted ways. U.S.S. Mariners Dave Cameron writes that Junior "cant be a leader, because hes just not good enough"; Joe posnanski demonstrates that Griffey has been below average for about five years; Seattle Times columnist Steve Kelley opines that "Griffey has become the elephant in the clubhouse." Something is wrong in Seattle: the man who once thrilled Kingdome crowds with homers produced by absurd bat speed and catches that captured the imagination is now reduced to reportedly crying at team meetings.
BQ: Do you believe the reports that he was asleep in the clubhouse?
Answer: Yes.

How do you read a batting line?
In a lot of baseball writing, hitters stat are written in a line, something like .250/.300/.350 -- what are these numbers? Im pretty sure the first one is batting average, but what about the last two? OBP? OPS? SLG? Or does it vary between writers.
Heres a link to an article that does this: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/joe_posnanski/04/22/pitch.counts/index.html
Answer: 99% of the time,
it's averagte/on-base percentage/slugging percentage
They usually won't put the OPS, because all the person has to do is add the two numbers together, so why take up more space?

Do you think Buck ONeil belongs in the Hall of Fame?
if you dont check out this book : The Soul of Baseball A Road Trip Through Buck ONiels America- By Joe posnanski
Answer: Yes I do.
Unfortunately, the criteria for getting in the Baseball HOF is inconsistent and unfair. For instance, a common excuse is that a player did not have a good relationship with the media and that is who does the voting...screw the media...it's about being on the field and winning. There are some incredibly mediocre old-timers that don't deserve to be in the HOF and other former players who should be no-brainers. Buck O'Neil is one of them.
I think that too much emphasis is put on longevity. Mediocre players who play for 20 yrs get more praise than Elite players with shorter careers. I believe that a player's 10 best consecutive years should be the most important consideration as a player. Was he among the very best in the game during that decade? Yes or no? Consistent mediocrity just doesn't impress me. Bert Blyleven, Andre Dawson, and Tommy John fit this category. Shorter but very successful careers...Bob Feller, Sandy Koufax, Thurmon Munson, and even Jim Rice would fit that category. (War, Injury, Death, Injury) Tommy's career was cut famously short, but he was never among the very best over a ten-year period.
A bubble candidate would be Tony Perez. He was very consistent, but never led the league in a single statistical category. I would say that he was consistently very good, but never really great. He was a very good run producer...but with the guys in front of him, how could he not be. I could go either way.

We interrupt this N.F.L. playoff season with the disturbing news that the N.B.A. season is going on.
