How important are THE TEN COMMANDMENTS to civilization?
Officials with the Valley School District in New Kensington are bracing for a legal battle with an atheist group that’s threatening a lawsuit if a Ten Commandments monument is not removed from school property.
Every major culture, society, and religion recognize these same principles.
If they done, they dont become major
They are the foundation of any peaceful and prosperous society
Every major culture, society, and religion recognize these same principles.
If they dont, they dont become major.
They are basic to a peaceful and prosperous society.
For years the monument has been a fixture outside of Valley High School without any complaints or controversy.
But now, the district is coming under fire to remove it or face a possible lawsuit.
The Valley School District recently received a letter from the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation claiming The ten commandments monument violates the principles of separation of church and state by being on high school property.
“The one thing that’s very, very important that people realize is that there is no way that our school district is trying to promote or impose religion on our students,” said Dr. George Batterson, the Valley School District Superintendent.
Answer: People have a right Not to Believe; there is no conflict there. The Conflict is People have the Right to Believe, but those who do not, want to remove that Right from others. "Commandments" that recommend people not lie, steal, cheat, kill, etc. (some considered against Law) - - is a positive thing, in order to have a civilized society. Non-believers - lighten up - Don't like it, Don't read it.

Are THE TEN COMMANDMENTS applicable to everyone or just the ancient Israelites?
After reading Exodus 20, arguments could be made supporting both sides:
1. The ten commandments were religious laws specific only to the ancient Israelites.
2. The ten commandments is a moral code applicable to everyone, everywhere, at all times.
Answer: Most Christians say the Ten Commandment apply to all humans and others say that they only apply to the Israelites only. Reading The ten commandments it is clear all of them are Christian concepts covered by Jesus in his preaching and therefore should be followed.
The major difference in Christianity is should Christians follow the other 613 laws in the Old Testament and the answer to that question is Christians are not required.
Godspeed.

EXHIBITION REVIEW; A Jewish Museum Shifts Identity
BERKELEY, Calif. -- The story of how the Judah L. EDITORIAL; Moralizings High Cost
Multiple marriages and even adultery are not automatic disqualifications for the presidency. If they were, the country would have a very different roster of former presidents and candidates. But when a political party decides that moralizing about personal conduct is as important as public policy, it inevitably makes some of its leaders vulnerable - Editorial highlights the hypocrisy inherent in Newt Gingrich seeking forgiveness from voters for his past infidelity while moralizing about other peoples personal conduct; suggests such hypocrisy is inevitable when a political party decides that telling people how to live their lives is as important as public policy. What is the point of posting THE TEN COMMANDMENTS in schools and courthouses?
A lot of Christians over the years have tried to post The ten commandments in government buildings like courthouses and public schools. What is the point of posting the Ten Commandment in these places? Do you think it is beneficial to post them in public places?
Answer: I see it as an attempt to "Christian Law" up as the laws and rules by which ALL Americans must live by and according to. Many forget that Law and codified rules existed LONG before the so-called Ten Commandments. Too many Evangelical Christians refuse to accept the fact that history existed long before the "history" which is contained within the Bible. The Egyptians had codified laws and rules (meaning that they were written down) long before Moses was even born. the Druids were reputed to be very wise and just in their interpretations of law and justice for a number of centuries before the existence of both the Greek and Roman empires and even into the very distant past of Europe. There existed a codified system of laws and rules to live by in the Indian sub-continent for thousands of years before the Jews were a wandering group of tribes in the Middle East, herding sheep and goats. Even the Americas had codified laws about 3 or 4 thousand years ago.
It is merely Evangelical chauvinism which insists upon ONLY that set of 10 "Laws" (The ten commandments) as being the ONLY true set of laws which ever existed and all else was just imagination or fraud. It is amazing what kind of disruption to the flow of history that blind allegiance to a book which was written LONG after the fact can accomplish. It is truly all so very sad; and it'd be hilarious if it were not for the fact that these groups are trying to gain total control over one of the most powerful Nations on the face of the planet with some of the deadliest weapons ever known to exist on our World.
Brightest Blessings,

Connection between THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and the New Testament?
Im confused - Christians regularly say we should all be following The ten commandments. Christians also say that the Old Testament does not apply any more because of the new Covenant of Jesus and the New Testament. How does this work? In my Bible, The ten commandments are in the Old Testament. Can someone please clarify this for me?? Do The ten commandments apply now or not?
Answer: This particular problem has confused more people than perhaps anything else.
The ten commandments indeed are the core of the old covenant between God and Israel. Christians are not a party to this covenant, and this covenant ended upon the death of the party of the first part, God in the personage of Jesus Christ.
Now here's where all the confusion really gets going.
The new covenant is a "law" of faith (Romans 3:27) and faith expresses itself through love. Love "fulfills" the law as contrasted to the old covenant where one merely "kept" the law in the letter, despite the condition of the heart. When one believes the gospel, and believing the gospel is of utmost importance, God gives His Holy Spirit to that person, which is a Spirit of love. It is the new heart of flesh that replaces the heart of stone (stoney heart) we are born with, enabling us through that love to fulfill the law through love, even as both Paul and James declare in their writings. Love fulfills the law because you would never do anything to harm one you love. One with the stoney heart could only "keep" a command such as not to murder, but they could still be harboring hatred in that stoney heart.
The Spirit of God, aka the heart of flesh, is also referred to as God's law in this context that is put in the believer. Deceived legalists conclude it is the old covenant ten commandments that are written on the heart. If this were so, then there would be no need for the Holy Spirit, and indeed no need for Christ!
Study study study. It is those who seek that find.

Why do Christians want to post THE TEN COMMANDMENTS in public so badly?
Several Christian groups have gone to the courts to try to force government buildings like schools and courthouses to post The ten commandments. Why? What is the point of posting them? Is posting The ten commandments going to stop people from coveting or disrespecting their parents? Or is this a ploy to make it look like our legal system is based on The ten commandments?
Answer: If i'm not mistaken, it's mostly defensive not offensive. Most of the time the commandments are taken down, and the fight is to not have them removed - not trying to install them where they never were in the first place. Many Christians feel that they are being discriminated against by removing anything Judeo-Christian from American culture. Some on the other hand are just really hard headed and don't respect freedoms of any religion other than their own. For the record, I am a Christian myself - but respect the rights and freedoms of others, and I support multiple religions as a Chaplain Assistant in the Army.

What can THE TEN COMMANDMENTS tell us about ancient Hebrew society?
I know that they obviously tell us that they only believed in one God, but what else about ancient Hebrew society can we get from The ten commandments?
Answer: Quite a lot, For example:
- While They believed in one god - they recognized other gods and were forbidden to worship them. A commandment that wouldn't be necessary if they didn't recognize other gods.
- Their worship of god was to be non-materialistic, to separate them from the Egyptian religion they just escaped and from the other religions around them. The religion was to keep them together and separated.
- Likewise - the religion was not to be used lightly and self-proclaimed "prophets" were very much discouraged.
- They lived in a very structural and family oriented society. Protecting the family and society was very important. 3 out of 10 commandments deal with the family: respect for parents, no adultery and no coveting.
- They were socialists, making 70% of the commandments about person-to-person relationship instead of person-to-god. including a weekly rest day.
- They cared about purity of thought and not merely purity of deeds. making it an affront to even covet and not only steal.
There's a lot more but those are key examples. Hope this helps:)

By whose authority did Protestants renumber and change THE TEN COMMANDMENTS?
Someone posted on here the same question but directed it to Catholics. Now, personally, I think its only fair to ask the same question to Protestants.
The Jewish and Protestant Ten Commandments are not numbered the same. In fact the Jewish Ten Commandments combine "you shall have no gods before me" and "you shall not make for yourself an idol/graven image," while Protestants separate these. So the same people accusing Catholics of deleting the commandment against graven images are pretty much accusing Jews of the same thing.
By whose authority did Protestants separate these into two distinct commandments?
Answer: Since the original Bible did not have any chapter or verse divisions (or punctuation for that matter) there was some ambiguity about where to divide the commandments. The Bible itself mentions ten words. Of course there are actually many more commandments in the Old Testament. Orthodox Jews count 613, but there again, it all depends on how you divide them. The reason Protestants divided the second commandment from the first was to emphasize their contempt for the images promoted by the Roman Catholic Church. That was then. Now is now. I think we are ready to move on. In a world where there are openly Satanic churches operating it seems a little silly to worry about Protestant/Catholic disputes.
