How do scientist know that there is a HIGGS BOSON PARTICLE?
How do physicists know that there is some missing particle? How will this one particle help understand what mass is or where it came from and why?
I can find the answer the slow way on the WWW and do my own research on absolutely EVERYTHING! So why even have a Y/A? 50 million heads are better than a few resources maybe?
Answer: It's a mathematical conjecture, based on a model of particle theory that has pretty much worked out well.
Neptune was also a mathematical conjecture. It was only discovered by directions given by mathematical theory, and not by observation.
This does not mean that the Higgs Boson exists, but the mathematics do suggest where and how to look for it if it does.

Answer: I happen to like your question and even gave it a star. I also like your sense of humor. :-) As for the Higgs...Just wait until the LHC goes on line in 2008 at CERN. If the Higgs Boson exists we should finally be able to detect it. There is even a possibility of creating a mini black hole. If that happens and it grows too big you may actually be correct. I hope your funny question doesn't become reality. I personally find this all very interesting and exciting. Go to this link to read more about it.

Can you explain the importance of the HIGGS BOSON PARTICLE to the average person?
I realise that its very important, highly desirable and that governments will spend billions to find it. What I dont understand are the reasons why. If its discovered, will it have a practical use? Will it show us something amazing?
As basic as possible please - if you found the Higgs boson particle, what would you do after that?
Many thanks.
Answer: The Higgs Boson is a subatomic particle proposed by Peter Higgs. The particle is of much interest because, as far as we've come in describing the laws that govern the universe, gravity leaves us perplexed. (Hence string theory and extradimensional theories alike.)
Basically, gravity is the force of attraction between objects with mass. What gives an object mass? Surely most would say atoms, but what gives atoms mass? The Higgs Boson is a proposed particle that exists within a field (much like an electromagnetic field) which gives matter mass. People are desperately trying to find it because it helps unify the forces of nature (which most physicists agree need to be unified if they all originated from the same place, ie the big bang). Finding a Higgs Boson (in experiments in the Large Hadron Collider, for example) would lend immense insight into gravity, one of the least understood forces (at least on the subatomic level).

Does the HIGGS BOSON PARTICLE have anything to do with the origin of the universe?
If not, how did it get the popular name god particle?
Does it explain anything about the origin of the universe in any way?
So this particle is a part of every atom, like nucleus and electron?
Answer: Hi:
If they can be proven to exist than it will Revolutionize our understanding of physic and how the universe came to be and how it will end
it got the name due to the amount of power needed to create it or prove it
to understand the conscept
draw a dot on a sheet of paper at the leftest hand side of the paper now put another one in line with that on the rightest hand side of the paper and draw a line between them and put 16 evenly space dots from those two farther dots in the ( 1) rightest hand draw a man shape stick figture on the next left side dot (2) draw a sun and in the next left (3) draw a galaxy than after that (4) draw a black square with a white square or a cloud for the next ( 5) draw a black dot with a spirals going out from it, for the ( 6) Next left draw light waves for the Next (7) just a black square for it for the next one after the that ( 8) draw a huge circle with white in it , for the next left dot (9) draw a picture of the atoms ( 10) for the next draw waves ( and label it light) for the 11) next ( draw little balls and label them subatomic paritles ( quarks) for the next 12) draw waves and label it gamma rays ( 13 ) draw a clock face and label it the being of time as we know it, ( 15 ) for the next dot label it the universe at 100 trillonth of on trillion of a second after THE BIG BANG and for the last dot The Big bang
after you done this what does this mean? well where the man figture is the universe as we know it 14. 5 billions after the big bang
where the sun( as well as the 4 generation stars) is when the sun first formed from the gas cloud some 4.5 billion years ago
the next left dot with the galaxy is when the galaxies where from some 10 billion years ago
the black square with white or a cloud is hydrogen gas that formed 12.3 billion years ago
the next left dot is light that fromed when atoms got cool enough to emit ( which is now cosmic microwave background noise ) light and in between is when atoms formed
the next dot are when energy formed the subatomic paticiples 13. 5 billion years ago
the next dot is gamma or very high energy x- ray
the next left most dot is for when time as we know began as we know the concept 13.9 billion years ago
the next left dot is the size of the known universe where no matter exist as we know it just a infinitly hot kernal of energy which will be come all that is and all that will ever be
and finally the big bang itself the energy is smaller than a subatomic paticle
as you move left from the man stick figture the engery or heat you get to increases as the futher back in time you go and the amount is almost infinite
the Higgs boson particle is something that was created between the big Bang and the atom and it formes the structure of them which give them there masses and form every part of of the atom like nucleus and electrons and the neutrons as well along with the rest of the subatomic particles which stablizes them but to do that you need very high energies to do it if this can be done than this would explain why atom where form answer both the the origin and the end of the universe
the reason it is called a God particle is due the energy involved
like you said it is part of us and anything else you are star material - some Food for thought
I hope this explain it

What can scientists do if the HIGGS BOSON PARTICLE does exist?
More specifically, will it allow us to generate new technologies and if so, what?
Answer: none that I know of...
Here's is my understanding of the Higg's Boson:
The Higg's Boson is actually the Z⁰ particle that comes into play during weak interactions (i.e. interactions that happen through the electro-weak force).
It's charged counterpart is the W+/- boson. The W particle is an intermediary for the weak force:
Example: Neutron beta decay:
Relevant info:
up quark: smaller mass than down quark and has charge +2/3
down quark: larger mass (than up) and has charge -1/3
A neutron is made up of two down quarks and one up (2/3 - 1/3- 1/3 = 0 charge)
ddu
The neutron decays because one of the down quarks decays two an up quark:
d -> u + e- + ʋe-bar
(ʋe-bar = electron type anti-neutrino)
So what actually happens is that the down particle decays to an up quark plus a W- boson, which then immediately decays to an electron and an electron type anti-neutrino (the neutrino is to preserve lepton number...at least that's the theory).
So what people see is that the neutron turns into a proton and spits out an electron (plus the neutrino that most people wouldn't notice...it's hard to detect neutrinos).
So here is what I can paraphrase from what I've "heard":
The higgs boson may be the particle that couple mass to other particles...that is this particle could be why mass exists in the first place (i.e. where gravity comes from).
I've never understood the connection between the Higg's Boson (which is predicted by Weinberg's theory of electro-weak interactions (et. al.)) and mass, so I don't know where that comes from.
I don't think that finding the Higg's Boson will tell us anything, because modern physics already exists assuming that the Higg's Boson DOES exist, so finding it will only confirm current theories--I don't think it will yield new physics.

What if the LHC at CERN is successful in finding the HIGGS BOSON PARTICLE ?
I understand that the purpose of the LHC is to find the elusive God particle. If this was found, what would be the implications for science as we know it, and what would the next steps be?
Answer: The Higgs boson is the missing part of every calculation involving mass and particles and it is so important in particle physics. If the higgs boson were found it might also help us find the graviton -- a particle that explains gravity but has not yet been observed. This "God Particle" ties into many theories including string, M, and the unified theory. In finding the Higgs Boson there is a possiblity of observing a mini black hole; a bet that Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne have. We could then find out what black holes are made of and that could possibly lead us the the observation of other particles making up Dark Matter.... so exciting

Will your life be forever changed should the scientists in Switzerland discover the Higgs/Boson particle?
This would be proof that God isnt the creator of the Universe, but some how i have a feeling you will say God created the Higgs/Boson particle, thus slipping back into the old ways of using your religious beliefs as an excuse for everything.
Answer: It wouldn't be proof at all, but there's another issue which is relevant here: Hawking radiation.
Assuming God is all-knowing, quantum mechanics can't be true if God exists. Quantum mechanics claims there are undecided phenomena which become facts by being observed. If God exists and is all-knowing, all phenomena are observed. Hawking radiation is the process whereby micro black holes would disappear. The theory is that black holes lose mass because a particle-antiparticle pair, which is virtual rather than real because it's unobserved, on the event horizon of a black hole would become real because one of the pairs would fall into the black hole and cease to interact with the rest of the Universe and the other would radiate out. Since mass has to be conserved, this means the black hole has to get smaller when this happens, and if the black hole is small enough, it would disappear very fast. However, if there is a God of the kind i've described, that God is all-knowing and virtual particles of that kind cannot exist. Therefore, if there is a God, micro black holes will not evaporate and would probably constitute evidence for God's existence or for quantum theory being wrong. If they do evaporate, either there is no God of that kind or God's perception of reality does not depend on bivalent logic.

Can someone explain what the HIGGS BOSON PARTICLE is and why its so significant?
Try describing it in laymans terms and what can we do with it?
Answer: As a magnet to steel, I have become much more interested in the happenings of our universe. So much so that I cannot even begin to express my interest in Science since The History Channel, Science Channel, and Explorer Channel made it possible to understand the freak nature of our universe. As for the Higgs Boson, I believe it is mostly research since science cannot prove how energy fields have come into existence (big bang theory). At best the Higgs Boson can be described in a way that most all fields in science are generated by some source, an energy type of some kind, a charge, so to speak. It’s complicated. Electric fields are generated by an electric charge. Removing the source (electric charge) extinguishes the electric field. But the value of the Higgs field remains even though there is no energy source. Even the best minds have difficulty explaining the functions relating to ‘The God Particle’ or the Higgs Boson. The following video makes it easier to understand. Best wishes to you!

What is the HIGGS BOSON PARTICLE composed of?
Im not very into physics but i do want to know its composition and what are its potential to the world.
Which elements make it?
Answer: Your deceptively simple question is complicated!
I will try for the short version, with the caveat that this is a bit beyond my field of expertise:
There are four fundamental forces in the world:
electromagnetic (seen in light, electricity, magnetism)
electroweak (which takes place in certain nuclear decay processes, such as a neutron into a proton, electron and neutrino)
strong (which takes place inside a nucleus between protons and/or neutrons - keeps the atom from flying apart)
gravitational (which occurs between different units of matter)
Quantum Field Theory says each force operates by certain particles - collectively called bosons - acting upon other particles - collectively known as fermions. Bosons are also referred to as "force mediators" , they transfer force between particles; Bosons are *usually* massless (all field energy, no effective mass). Fermions are thought of as the constituents of matter.
An example of a boson interacting with a fermion is an electromagnetic field (like light) interacting with an electron (which add energy to and pushes an electron). Bosons and fermions are radically different in the way they behave - but you can read about that elsewhere.
Not only can you think of both boson and fermion as particles, but you can think of them as collections of waves (quantum fields - hence the term).
OK, clear on what a boson is? Probably not :), but we'll press on anyways.
For the electroweak force, the bosons are the W and Z bosons, which act upon a wide variety of fermions - neutrons, protons, electrons, neutrinos - during decay processes.
However, while most bosons are massless, the W and Z bosons are not. During decay processes, masses of fermions change, unlike electromagnetism or the other fundamental forces.
This is a mystery - why do these bosons have mass but not others? The mystery is aggravated by the fact that at high energies, the electromagnetic and electroweak forces appear to be similar or the same, so something special is affecting these bosons.
So what gives these W and Z bosons their mass? Well, a fellow named Higgs came up with a new kinds of particle - called a Higgs Boson - which transfers mass from fermions to the W and Z bosons.
This is a theoretical particle, this Higgs boson - some say it exists, some say it doesn't, but either way it's likely to be observed only at high energies or equivalent masses (remember Einsteins E = mc^2) - hence the need for the high energy accelerators.
If the particle is found, it could go a long way towards explaining outstanding questions in physics about fundamental forces; it would also help in the proving of "unified field theories" linking the four forces.

But here, in the shell of a nut, is a 25 cent introduction to the HB; otherwise known as the god particle.
The HB is the theoretical messenger particle for the HIggs Field. As the messenger, the HB carries the "act like a mass" message to all those particles that would have mass like properties: inertia and attraction by gravity. Other particles, like photons, are not affected by the HB; and, consequently, they have no rest mass.
Some call it the god particle because without its interactions with those other particles, there would be no quarks, electrons, and neutrinos. Bottom line there would be no atoms, elements, stars, planets, people, plants, and bed bugs. Did I mention, there would be no universe as we know it.
