1. What is the military significance of the STRAIT OF HORMUZ?
Answer: Nicola,
The Straights of Hormuz is the entrance to the Persian Gulf (also called the Arabian Gulf).
As a ship enters the gulf, Oman is on the port side (left side), and Iran is to the starboard (right).
The military significance is that the Persian Gulf provides sea access to Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Note all those oil producing countries?
Military Significance: If a country is able to block the Straights of Hormuz, the oil is blocked. A number of ships could be jammed up inside the gulf if Iran gets testy as they have threatened to do in the past.

If Iran were to close the STRAIT OF HORMUZ, would America have any right to send in the navy or bomb?
It is technically Iranian territory, so what right do we have to tell them what who can and cannot enter? Does Iran have a right to bomb America because they block the Mexican-American border?
A quotation from a so called liberal on my last question on this matter:
"Invading and Occupying is what stupid cons do.
Obama will bomb them, no invasion necessary"
So yeah, would we have a right to bomb?
Well, in what way would military action be legal? What exactly would Iran be doing that is against international law?
Liberals like going on about illegal military action all the time.

With Iran closing the STRAIT OF HORMUZ, wouldnt it be smart to get that pipeline built?
I know Obama pledged to reduce Americas dependence on foreign oil, but better to buy from Canada then from the middle East and support terrorism. Unless you like terrorism and funding muslims, of course.
Answer: Beleive it or not, not all muslims are terrorists. Some muslims have sacrificed more and fought harder against the terrorists than many US soldiers. People in Iraq &Afghanistan who helped our side lost loved ones, lost their lives, lost their homes, had to flee the country, etc. Islam is a demonic false religion to be sure, but muslims are deceived, not demons. They don't ALL deserve your hatred. "Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you."
The terrorists and other muslims are still going to have plenty of people buying their oil (i.e Europe and China). The pipe from Canada will not change anything to do with terrorism. That is a canard.
Agreed that its better to do trade with you friendly nieghbor than with your unfriendly overseas dictatorship (like Chavez in Venezula who actually sells far more oil and coal to the US than the Middleeast does).
Canada's oil sands projects were devastating the environment, last time I read up on the issue years ago. Better to leave it in the ground untill there are better trenchless extraction methods. Thats the real issue. Maybe that day has already arrived??? If so, I have no problem with building the pipeline, as I beleive the global warming is at least mostly natural, not man-made.

Answer: "When we would sail the USS Iowa down the Strait of hormuz [to protect oil tankers] during the Iran-Iraq War, all of southern Iran would go quiet."--Frederick Stakelbeck, Jr.
Aug 5, 2008
This is not the first time the Iranians have threatened to shut down the strait as retaliation for any military strike on their nuclear program. Responding to those threats in June, Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff said during a press conference at the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain: "No one will close the Strait of hormuz. They are not going to close it because they will not be allowed to."
That said, many analysts say Iran has the ability to temporarily disrupt the Strait of hormuz, a passageway whence one fifth of the world's oil is shipped every day destined to the markets of China and East Asia.
An official for Central Command yesterday who asked not to be identified, however, said the Iranians had the capacity to wage a form of terrorism on the high seas and target commercial shipping vessels. "As to their claim they can close the straits, they could certainly have the capability to disrupt commercial activity in the strait. We do not assess them as capable of sustaining that disruption."
A former CIA Middle East analyst and a scholar at the Brookings Institution, Kenneth Pollack, said he believed that Iran's threats to close the Strait of hormuz were "hollow." "In a no-holds-barred fight with the United States Navy and Air Force, Iran might be able to inflict some painful losses, but its doom would be certain." Mr. Pollack added: "In the interim, Iran might be able to frighten commercial traffic away from the straits for a matter of days or even a few weeks. It might also take down an American warship or two. However, neither would be likely to have a lasting impact on global oil supplies or the overall military balance. And in the end, Iran's military capacities would be crippled."
A senior market analyst at Alaron Trading, a commodity brokerage firm, Phil Flynn, said a confrontation in the Strait of hormuz could raise the price of a barrel of oil by ten dollars. "We will assess if this is a onetime attack, an ongoing war, will the straits be reopened? A lot of this is speculation, when it would happen, how bad it would be," Mr. Flynn said. He added: "If there was some kind of attack, it would be military suicide for Iran if they did this. There would be a swift retaliation one way or another. Too many countries want those straits to remain open."

how to transfer oil if the Suez canal and the STRAIT OF HORMUZ were shut down?
If 2/3 of the worlds oil tankers were stuck in the Persian gulf, the Strait of hormuz and the Suez canal were both blocked, how could oil be transferred to the US, Japan, and Europe? Maybe using pipelines, but from where?
Answer: I don't know. That is why we need the Keystone pipeline and more resources from right here in the US. We could be energy independent if there was a will to make it a priority to our national security.

What would happen if Iran closed the STRAIT OF HORMUZ?
If Iran chose to mine the Strait of hormuz or threaten it with anti-ship missiles (Silkworms, Exocets, something like that) and the supply of oil was shut off for even a few days while a US Navy battlegroup fought its way through and opened it up, what would the economic repercussions be for the US and international oil market? Would overspeculation take hold and drive prices ridiculously high? Could domestic US oil production cushion the US economy from skyrocketing international oil-trading prices?
Answer: Oil prices would rocket. The US is protected to some degree and Iran exports a lot to China but this would also block Iraq and Kuwait supplies as well.
Chances are Iran infrastructure would be damaged so oil prices would be high for a while and speculators would really go to town.

Can America keep the STRAIT OF HORMUZ open?
Can the United States Military stop Iran from completely closing the Strait of hormuz, and if so, how?
Answer: No, the US can't stop Iran from temporally closing the Strait of hormuz. Iran could easily close the Strait temporarily by mining it. The problem with mining is getting enough mines down in the area before the US Navy comes down on you. See my link below to: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/arabian-gauntlet.htm Note the fast attack boat. There have been provocations over the years with a few dozen of these boats buzzing the US Navy periodically.
Now picture about 1000 of these things speeding into the 35 mile wide Strait from the Iranian side at 2:00am. I'd estimate these things can go 50 miles per hour. You do the math. In less than 1 hour they have crossed the Strait and dropped their mines. How long would it take for the good guys to figure out what was going on and launch a effective counter strike to stop it. I figure it would be over before anyone knew what happened. We’d wake up and read about it in the morning papers. Eventually we'd sweep the mines out of the area but that takes time.
