End of World in 2012? Maya "Doomsday" Calendar Explained
Even if the world does end in 2012, the Maya calendar deserves no credit for predicting it, experts say.
How does a MAYAN CALENDAR work?
I was in Mexico not too long ago and I did the touristy thing--I bought a Mayan calendar. Now I dont really get it. Can someone explain it to me?
Answer: The calendar works on a few cycles, at least. There's a solar cycle (period of time required for the earth to orbit the sun, or a year), a lunar cycle, a Venetian cycle (which pays close attention to Venus, of course), and an overall cycle. . .meaning a VERY LONG cycle that has yet to make a full revolution. The date for the 'end' of the overall cycle is either Dec. 21 or 22, 2012.
At the time of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, the Maya solar (yearly) calendar was the most accurate in the world (the europeans were using the Julian calendar, I think). The Maya used their calendar to predict patterns in history--it was used to divine the future; to make prophecy. Records of these prophecy can be found in an old Maya book called The Chilam Balam, which was written before Spain's arrival, phonetically transcribed into Roman alphabet, and eventually translated. It is here that the legend of Quetzalcotl--who everyone equates to Cortes--is found; and it also fortells of the demise of the Maya people.
So, given some of the accuracy, you might want to keep an eye on the date of Dec. 21 or 22, 2012.
If you want to read about it, you can find the Chilam Balam at academic bookstores. Also, there is a book called Maya Conquistador, which is pretty illuminating (but perhaps also controversial). And the classic, The Conquest of New Spain, by a guy named Bernal Diaz, who was with Cortes at the time of all these things.
Good luck. . .but go ahead and try and confirm these for yourself.

Does anyone besides me remember when they said the MAYAN CALENDAR ended in 1987?
I remember in the late 1980s that there were people running around saying the Mayan calendar ended in 1987. What happened with that? Why do we never consult their calendar for anything else besides the end of the world? I also am wondering when a Mayan will tell us about their calendar, so far, I only hear from hysterical Americans telling each other about it, though theyve never even seen the calendar.
Answer: No but the planetary solar galactic centre alignment they are trying to panic idiots with actually took place more accurately in 1998. Did the world end? NO, the scaremongers were to preoccupied with the millennium, when the world didn't end yet again! See a theme developing here?

MAYAN CALENDAR?
What does the Mayan calendar state that the world would end in 2012? Could it mean that we could be back in prehistoric times again? (Scientists say they discovered a new dinosaur and the birds are starting to become green). Could we have a new war? My mom says that if Obama is going to be president wed be in trouble? Is she right? What did all of our old presidents like pres. washington want for the whole world? What or why does Obama want to be president? He is Muslim right?
Answer: The Maya DO NOT say the world will end on 2012. They say the world will end "as we have known it"; meaning there will be a changes in human consciousness. However, my research has lead me to believe that there may also be some major catastrophes as we approach this date. The following is a summary of the Mayan calendar and their predictions for the time.
According to the Maya, this date marks both the end of their 25,625 year "Galactic Day" and their 5,125 year "Long Count" (Great Cycle) which are set to end and begin new cycles on the winter solstice (Dec. 21, 2012). On this date, our Solar system will be center aligned , in the Milky Way's equator. Our sun will be centered in a position called "The Tree of Life", as it does every 25,625 years. We will have exited the forth dimension and entered the fifth dimension. We exit the age of Pisces and enter the age of Aquarius.
In this position, unusually violent solar flares may cause drought, famine, increased earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods and maybe even a pole shift. Significant loss of life could occur. Earths magnetic field will temporarily collapse. Humans will be exposed to a cosmic energy that will facilitate enlightenment. In this state of higher consciousness, we will recognize that all matter, plant, animal, mineral are bound as one. This realization will mark the end of wars. People will be able to connect to their essence (vibrating energy), as only the most enlightened can.
The date marks a goal to be reached. Dark forces will make every effort to keep humanity from reaching this date. These forces are those entrenched in the third dimension, in the Material world. They have no desire to leave this age and wish to continue exploiting and endangering all life for material gain.
Wars just prior to this date could be most devastating, with a loss of as much as 2/3 of our population anticipated. The resulting man made environmental damage could make life inhospitable for those who survive.
Humans have freewill: Man's future is not set, nor predictable.

How does the MAYAN CALENDAR use mathematics?
How does the Mayan calendar work, the basic gist? And how does it involve the use of mathematics?

What is the actual date when the MAYAN CALENDAR ends?
Ive heard that our calendar is actually off by 7 years meaning that we should be in 2018 not 2011.
Also I heard that the Mayan calendar actually ends in the year 4772
And I heard that the Mayan calendar actually ends in 41,341,049,999,999,999,999,999,994,879 years in the future.
So is there any actual official date?
Answer: There are two calendars that the Mayan culture used, Ok three to be exact.
The Tzolkin Calendar, the Tun Calendar, and the Habb.
The Habb is more like our current calendar.
The Tzolkin Calendar has 260 days 13 months and 20 days per month.
The Tun Calendar has 360 days, that consist of two weeks, one 13 days long, and the other 20 days long....there is a reason for this but it would take a while to explain
.
The actual Tun / Tzolkin calendar measured the energies that affect our planet. In modern times we pay attention to only manifestations. (what we can see) The ancients studied, or payed attention to the energies that would cause the manifestations to happen. Here's an example. If we follow the pattern of energies the Mayans have been following then on Feb 2011 we should start to see the energies changing causing current power structures to fall. This cycle is called "Co-Creation" by the Mayans, and would begin on Feb 11, 2011. In essence people would start to come together to fight against current powers that have oppressed them, "Co-Creating" their future.
When did Egypt gain their independence? Yep right when the Mayans said it would happen. Down to the day...Feb 11, 2011..wow. Can you see any reflection in society today where people are rising up against those in power? Duh, from Occupy Wall Street to Libya, Syria, etc... The Mayans predicted this would be a natural effect from the type of energies that are flowing on Earth now. You probably can feel something is different, or a big change is coming.
When does that calendar end, or reach its last level? Oct 28th 2011. The reason there are 9 levels to the pyramids and monuments in the Mayan culture was because of the nine levels of creation. Each consisting of 13 waves of different energies. 7 days and 6 nights to each level.
The first level started 16.4 Billion years ago called the Action / Reaction period.
Each day last 1.26 Billion years in this period, and ends Oct 28th 2011.(Cellular cycle)
The second level started 820 million years ago and was called the Stimulus / Response period.
Each day last 63.1 millions years in this period, and ends Oct 28th 2011. (Mammalian cycle)
The third level started 41 million years ago and was called the Stimulus / Individual Response period.
Each day last 3.1 millions year, and ends Oct 28th 2011. (Familial cycle)
The fourth level started 2 million years ago called the Similarities and Differences - the mind.
Each day now last 158,000 years each, and ends on Oct 28th 2011. (Tribal cycle)
The fifth level started 102,000 years ago called the Reason period.
Each day last 7900 years each ending on Oct 28th 2011. (Cultural cycle)
The six level started 3115 BC called the Law period.
Each day of change in society now takes 394 years each ending on Oct 28th 2011. (National cycle)
The seventh level started 1755 AD called the Power period.
Each day last 19.7 years ending on Oct 28th 2011. (Planetary cycle) .....many of our parents grew up in this cycle and things didn't change much as you can see the rate of change was 19.7 years.
The eight level started 1999 and is called the Ethics period. Society will begin to question or ethics.
Each day now last 360 days each and ends on Oct 28th 2011. (Galactic cycle) things are picking up steam at so is the rate of change.
Last level started on or around Feb/Mar 2011 and is called the Co-Creation period.
Each day now last 18 to 20 days each. There are two camps that fight over the 18 or 20 day time frame. Either way things are really evolving fast now. The rate of change is 18 days vs our grand parents time frame of 19.7 years.
If the Mayans are correct then our planet will experience the highest form of energy on or right after this Oct 28th 2011 date. If one of the other calendars ends on 2012, then a new one will begin the next day. Duh. The mystery behind the Mayans is their ability to track these energies that affect humanity. If 2012 brings a year of chaos then this Oct 28th 2011 date is still correct. The energies affect the manifestations. These energies will cause change. Remember we must shed the old to make way for the new. For my children's sake I'm ready for something better.
I hope this helps. no end of the world coming just an end to an old way of life. Were evolving hang on for the ride.
This does not mean the world will end it simply means the energies are going to prevalent on Earth to shift our planet into a whole new world. In essence the world will become much different after this date. If it helps we always are moving forward. Sometimes we have to shed the old to make way for the new. Take a deep breath everything is happening according to plan.

What are the Past and Current Events associated with the MAYAN CALENDARs Predictions?
Ive herd from many that there are a lot of past and current events which have been predicted on the Mayan calendar, does anyone know what they are?
Answer: According to some predictions on December 21, 2012, the black hole in the center of the galaxy, Earth and the Sun will form a straight line. This will reverse the polarity of the Earth causing it to do a 180 degree flip with the south pole now being the north pole. It's a very interesting concept. Many people think there are a lot of predictions of Nostradamus which have come true. The problem is too many "armchair scientists" get too much publicity and too many people are willing to listen. If December 21, 2012 is to be "judgment day" for planet earth, I wouldn't count on it. The Mayan calendar might only go that far because the given cycle ends. From that point, it just might go back to the beginning of the calendar and start over...sort of like the classical "wheel of life" or the concept of Karma. What goes round comes round. Then you have to add in the Biblical concepts because Jesus said (and he WAS A PROPHET) and I paraphrase, "No one knows when the end will come...not even me". The Mayans would not be an exception to that rule! Just remember what happened on New Year's day 2000. A lot of people predicted the end of the world, computers would crash, there would be chaos and all the survivalists were stocking up provisions for something that, with a few exceptions, NEVER HAPPENED!!!

Does the Mayan long count calendar actually predict the end of the world?
Ive heard all the sties about how the Mayan calendar predicts the end of times and all that other jazz.
But what I wanted to know, does the calendar actually say that the world will end on that date? or is it just something made up in Hollywood?
Answer: No,it just ends.
My current calendar ends 31 December 2011 - you can just as easily claim this is a prediction that the world will end on 31 December 2011,which is of course complete nonsense,as are claims that the end of the Mayan calendar means the end of the world on the date it ends.

Did the MAYAN CALENDAR start at the beginning of the world?
I dont believe in this, but I think a lot of people do. Ive even heard of far more fantastical stories people believe in ;)
So I thought I would ask. If the Mayans predicted the end wouldnt they have predicted the beginning with their calendar? So did the Mayan calendar start at the beginning of the world as we know it?
Answer: The current cycle of the Mayan calendar began in 3114 BC.

Is the ancient MAYAN CALENDAR true that it predicts the year of 2012 of the great cycle?
Is it true that the Mayan calendar is 100% accurate that the year December 21, 2012 will be the end point? Anyone know about this & an expert of these sacred calendars?
Answer: You mean the "It's 2012 and we're all gonna die!" hype? That's all it is. Yes, people are making money off the books, movie, and periodic TV shows. As for "It's 2012 and we're all gonna die! that bogus.
On 21 Dec 2012 the long count of the Mayan calendar clicks over. Our calendar does the exact same thing every 31 Dec. Recall 2000? The Millennium? That's similar to the change over of the long count. Nothing else.! If you recall 2000 we had the "Y2K" issue and the "It's Y2K and we're all gonna die! hype.
Add to it that there's a 7 year math error in the Gregorian calendar. for us it's really 2016.The "It's 2012 and we're all gonna die!" is long gone.
So what will happen on this date (or has already happened, or may happen some indefinite time before or afterwards?)
"Lawrence Joseph forecasts widespread catastrophe in Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation Into Civilization's End. Spiritual healer Andrew Smith predicts a restoration of a "true balance between Divine Feminine and Masculine" in The Revolution of 2012: Vol. 1, The Preparation. In 2012, Daniel Pinchbeck anticipates a "change in the nature of consciousness," assisted by indigenous insights and psychedelic drug use."

What so others say?
"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

"Maya inscriptions...reference future predicted events or commemorations that would occur on dates that lie beyond 2012 ... Most of these are in the form of "distance dates" where some Long Count date is given.
For example, on the west panel at the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, a section of the text projects into the future to the 80th Calendar Round (CR) 'anniversary' of the famous Palenque ruler ...which lies over 4,000 years in the future from Pakal's time—13 October 4772"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar
While many clam the calendar "ends." the date isn't 2012.
"this date lies some 41,341,049,999,999,999,999,999,994,879 years in the future, or 3 quintillion times the scientifically accepted age of the universe."

As for disasters, a review of the last 40 years has these books and events predicting disaster:
1968 "Population Bomb". Too many people in the 1980s. We’re shoulder to shoulder and have starvation.
"Famine 1975" In that year we run out of food
"Greening of America" We all become hippies eating un-homogenized peanut butter.
"Future Shock" We'll have too many choices. (The concept of multi-tasking wasn't known)
the 1970s had a concern of a "new ice age" we should increase the greenhouse effect
"Jupiter Effect" the planets will line up and the earth will do something.
"Y2K" Points given for those that can explain "why" it was a concern.
Millennium Supposedly it was to be the end of the world. The question was: "Is it 2000 or 2001?"
If you get the impression, there's a lot of disaster predictions and they sell books, you're right.
During the 1800s there were a number of movements that predicted the end of the world. People gave away everything they owned and gathered to await the end. A couple of days later, they started trying to get their stuff back.
Final word:
"To summarize, there is no prophecy that the world will end with a 13th b'ak'tun, there are Mayan references to dates after 13.0.0.0.0, it is not certain precisely what date corresponds to 13.0.0.0.0 in modern terms, and we may be placing more importance on the Mayan calendar than it warrants merely because we have more knowledge about it."
