Why is it pictures of Christmas are represented by Santa, when Hanukkah is the MENORAH? Where did nativity go?
Why is the nativity scene rarely used as the picture to represent Christmas, especially when all the December holidays are represented by pictures? The Menorah represents the miracle of light, Christmas the miracle of life. Santa is the commercial representation, the secular version. As a Christian, it gets to me that there appears to be unequal treatment of the religious holidays. Christmas continues to become more and more secular, like showing the nativity scene is obscene.
Anyone else see this? Why?
Answer: Christmas represents the miracle of life, and it's very obvious in the tree, the mistletoe and holly etc. Keep in mind that it was a festival of life and light before Christianity came along.

Is it offensive to light a MENORAH when you are not Jewish?
I am lighting a Menorah and I am not Jewish. I celebrate christmas but one of my friends celebrates Hanukah. My neighbor thinks it is offensive but really its offensive to my friend. All the decorations at school say merry Christmas, which she does not celebrate. Nothing in the entire school says Kwanza or Hanukah. Do you think it is rude for me to light a Menorah when I dont celebrate Hanukah seriously (even after reading all of this)?
Answer: Nope not at all. Its really great that you want to do that, even if your not doing it to celebrate the holiday, just to include your friend, isn't that what the holidays are basically about. I think its really horrible that people always represent what they themselves believe in. A couple years ago my mom decorated the local middle school, with a little thing from all the religions, to support the diversity of this small town. Of course like three days later some teacher 'decked the halls' with christmas tree ornaments because she didn't think the school was in the spirit enough. Sheesh. People these days.

Is lighting a MENORAH when your not Jewish offensive?
My friend bought a Menorah for herself. She is a Christian and none of her family members are Jewish. Is it offensive to people who are actually Jewish for her to "celebrate" Hanukka? The only thing she is doing is lighting a candle every night. I feel that this is offensive to people who are Jewish and i wanted to hear other peoples opinions.
Answer: Yeah. She surely doesn't know any of the traditions that go with the celebration. How can she possibly do the prayers, and say the right things, and understand what she is doing, if she hasn't grown up with the religion, or taken the appropriate classes to BECOME Jewish?
What she SHOULD do is ask someone who IS Jewish, if they would help her understand, and teach her the traditions. I would think that would be a nice first step towards being converted, or otherwise better educated.
You can't just jump into Judaism by getting a Menorah and celebrating what amounts to a very unimportant festival. And Honestly! The thought of someone just jumping in and celebrating a more important holiday! Even more offensive!
Being invited to learn is one thing...being interested enough to want to think about conversion is one thing...doing things that one perceives as Jewish, with no understanding of why or how it is supposed to be done...comes off as shallow, yes offensive.

Jewish friends, a question about a MENORAH in a Christmas parade?
Every year our town has a Christmas parade. One float has a Menorah on it and says in lights "Happy Hanukkah." I think it is wonderful that our small Jewish community participates, but some people said it seemed weird to have that in a Christmas parade.
Is there really anything wrong with it from a Jewish perspective? We dont have a big enough Jewish presence here to have separate Hanukkah events for the town.
Thank you.
Answer: I think it's lovely :)
It's obvious that Chanukah is being represented separately within the Xmas parade, so there is absolutely no problem. And I think THIS is the way forward for all faiths - to share and complement each other!
Nice post :)

I am aware of the days and times the candles are lit. However, i am unaware of how long we are actually suppose to keep it up after the celebration. .
Answer: Most people light candles, and you keep the candle lit until it goes out. I would imagine you would keep the electric light on for the day, then add another light for each day that passes. On Saturday when Hanukkah is over you would turn it off.

During the Holocaust, did the jewish people and prisonors use a MENORAH and pray for god?
Did they pray and hoped? What did this symbol stand for and did the jewish people use this symbol for some use DURING THE HOLOCAUST!? Did they like do they steps on the Menorah? Like the first day then the next and so on? If so can you awnser all of my questions and can you list the steps they did on the Menorah? I am working on a project and i need some help easy understanding questions. Thanks.
Answer: No Menorah was available to the Jews in the concentration camps, however during one day, in Auschwitz, the Jews did put God on trail. He was found guilty.
"During the Holocaust, Jews in Concentration Camps put God on trial. They literally got together in the prisons and held court-like proceedings, putting God on the stand. "How could you?" they asked, "You, the God of Abraham and Moses, who led our people out of slavery, who parted the Red Sea, who led us to the Promised Land. How could you let this happen to us? What do you have to say for yourself?" They put God on trial, and in the end, some found God guilty of betrayal. Others acquitted him on grounds that God wasn't as powerful as he had been in Biblical times. So he couldn't be held responsible. Others, looking around and watching their loved ones march off to the gas chambers, could come to no other conclusion than that God must be dead."
There is more than one theologian who maintains that the Holocaust was just another Babylonian exile. When the Jews were finally freed from captivity in Babylon by Cyrus the Great, blessing were bestowed on them by God - they were allowed to return to their promised homeland. When the Holocaust was over, the Jews likewise were restored to their promised homeland - the newly created country of Israel.
"The Babylonian exile represents both one of Judaism's darkest hours and also the beginning of its history as an enduring universal religion"
Interesting theory.

MENORAH?
I know what it is but why is it there and what is the importance of it to the jewish religion? Whats so important about?
Answer: The Menorah is the official symbol of the Jewish nation. This image of the lamp accompanied by the olive branch was not chosen arbitrarily – it is based on a chain of events that happened way back in ancient history.
The history of the Menorah begins with the Biblical artisan, Bezalel, who created the first six-branched lamp for use in the First Temple. It had six branches that stemmed out of one main post. It was made from one solid block of pure gold.
The First Temple was built by King Solomon in 1000 B.C.E. In the Temple stood not one but ten of these great objects. They stood intact for four hundred years until 586 B.C.E, when Nebuchadnetzar, king of Babylon, destroyed the temple and all it contained.
Seventy years later the Second Temple was built. After it was completed, a new menora was created and placed inside – this time there was only a single one, made of gold but now with seven branches.
At 167 B.C.E the fighting began in Modiin, a village not far from Jerusalem. the Jews fought for over three years. Although the Jews were outnumbered and had less ammunition, their determination eventually led them to victory – they defeated the Greek army against all odds!
After their great victory, Judah Maccabee and his soldiers went to the holy Temple, where they found that many things were missing or broken, including the golden Menorah. They repaired and purified the Temple, and after completing the task they decided to have a dedication ceremony and light the great lamp. They looked everywhere for oil, but found only a small flask that contained enough oil to produce light for a single day. Miraculously, this oil lasted for eight days, giving them enough time to obtain new oil to keep the menora lit.
So justice was done but did not last for long…
At 70 B.C.E the Temple was destroyed again, this time by the Romans. Titus, the Roman general, placed Jerusalem under siege, captured it and put it to the torch. He seized the gold Menorah and other valuables form the Temple and displayed them in his the parade of triumph. This parade was later commemorated in an embossment on the Gate of Titus built in Rome. It depicts the humiliated Jewish captives forced to carry the Menorah as a symbol of their defeat. This Menorah described is similar to the original in that it has seven branches but all the other details are different.
Following the destruction of the Temple, the Menorah became an important symbol of Jewish history. It is a reminder of the sovereignty of the Temple. Surprisingly, the symbol of the candle bar used today is not the one described as the original piece created for the temple, but the one detailed on the gate of Titus.
Today Jews celebrate Hanukkah as a commemoration of the triumph of the Maccabees. Every night for eight nights, Jewish people light candles in a Menorah, thus commemorating the eight-day miracle. In order to preserve the holiness of the original menora, Rabbis forbade the use of an exact replica of the seven branched menora. This is why today, candles are lit in an eight branched Menorah called a "Hanukiyah" to differentiate it from the seven-branched Menorah of the Temple.
i hope it's helps

What is Hanukkah and tell me about a MENORAH?
Please can you tell me how you use a Menorah and tell me about Hannukah. PLEASE. Ill pick best answer.
Answer: The Hanukkah Menorah (Hebrew: מנורה Menorah) (also Hebrew: חַנֻכִּיָּה Hanukiah, or Chanukkiyah, pl. hanukiyot, or Yiddish: חנוכּה לאמפּ khanike lomp, Lit: Chanukah lamp) is, strictly speaking, an eight-branched candelabrum lit during the eight-day holiday of Hanukkah, as opposed to the seven branched-Menorah used in the ancient Temple or as a symbol. The ninth holder, called the shamash ("helper or servant"), is for a candle used to light all other candles.
Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Temple after the successful Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy. The Jews found only enough ritually pure olive oil to light the Menorah for one day, but the supply miraculously lasted eight days until a new supply could be obtained. In celebration of this miracle, the chanukkiyah has eight branches for eight candles or oil lamps, none higher than any other, except for one higher branch for the auxiliary candle, or shamash, which guards against secular use of the other lights and is also used to light them.
The common reason for the number of the candles is that they symbolize the eight days of the miracle. Each night an additional light is kindled – one on the first night, two on the second night; and so on – until on the eighth night of Hanukkah all eight lights, plus the shamash, are lit.

Where is the MENORAH situated in the Synagogue?
Im doing GCSE coursework for RE and one of the questions is this. I need to know where the Menorah is in a orthodox Synagogue. 10 points for right answer.
Answer: It's a silly question. There's no requirement for a Menorah to be in a synagogue, nor any particular place for it if there is one.
I suspect the answer they're looking for is 'on the bimah' or 'in front of the ark', but neither of them is particularly true.
