ON BASEBALL; Yankees Fan Looks Ahead, but It’s Not the Same
Most fans look ahead on opening day, with anticipation and relish. I’m no different, I suppose. Now early in my second half-century rooting for the Yankees , I can think of a few intriguing questions about this season. How are the Yankees going to squeeze seven legitimate starting pitchers into a five-man rotation, for instance, and will Joba - By BRUCE WEBER

A’s and Giants in Tug of War Over Rights to San Jose
OAKLAND, Calif. — To some outsiders, the Bay Area can look like one big patchouli party united by high technology, good food and liberal politics. Are the MARLINS the best dollar for dollar team in the major leagues?
Every year we go through this. The Marlins compete for the lowest payroll title while they compete for the division title. The ownership (against league rules) grossly underspends and even has been reprimanded by MLB. But because of raw talent and good management this team keeps winning. Is this the best dollar for dollar team in baseball?
I will say the Rays are a good dollar for dollar team. But the Marlins have had far more success in their short history as a team while spending even less than the Rays.
Answer: I would say yes. They have a great system. Put together a great team, and when you win the World Series, trade them away for young talent. It works.

When was the last time the MARLINS made a really big move to acquire an All-Star player?
Seems like they mostly grow All-Stars in their farm system and trade them away after they win something. Then they keep on coming from their own system. I know theyve traded for some decent players before, and probably "rented" some really good players for a stretch run. But who are some All-Star caliber players that came from another system to the Marlins and actually stayed there?
Answer: Signed Carlos Delgado in January 2005.
Drafted Dan Uggla out of the Arizona system in December 2005. He was getting long in the tooth but clearly could hit, and it's worked out pretty well.
Signed Luis Gonzalez in February 2008. He didn't have much left, but made for a decent platoon outfielder.
Ramirez has been the franchise gemstone for the past few years, but when he was acquired, he was a hot prospect -- highly promising, but far from being a superstar.
Delgado, I'd say.

How long until the Miami MARLINS trade Jose Reyes to the New York Yankees?
Jose Reyes wanted a no-trade clause in his contract, but didnt get one and got a extra year instead
When Derek Jeter finally retires, its inevitable that the Marlins trade Reyes to the Yankees. Even if the Marlins win, I still see them trading Reyes to the Yankees.
Agree or disagree. If you agree, how many years into Reyes 6 year contract will this occur? Im going with the trade deadline in 2014
Did your old account get suspended Bert?
Answer: Interesting, I never thought about that. The Yankees don't have any good shortstops in the minor, best one is probably Cito Culver who doesn't project to be more than average. However, trading for Reyes will cost the yankees quite a few good prospects and there's his injury history too so I would be totally against it.

What are the chances that the Florida MARLINS make the playoffs in your opinion?
The Marlins are .500 and currently third in the NL East and 6th in the wild card race. Basically our only chance of the playoffs is miraculously winning the NL east.
So what chances do you give my Florida Marlins in making the playoffs?
Answer: slim, but not impossible. i agree that they'll have to win the division. i think the Marlins can be compared to the rockies from a couple yrs back. young, talented, but untested. i think josh johnson is the second best pitcher in the nl behind jiminez. and of course hanley, cantu, and gaby sanchez are great too. i think if anibal sanchez and chris volstad can both start throwing like they are capable of, and a offensive player (coghlan/maybin) heats up then look out nl. they would be tough to beat in the playoffs with johnson and a hot volstad and sanchez.

How do you feel about the Rumor about Pedro Martinez going to the Florida MARLINS?
I think that Pedro is just using this as leverage to ensure that the Mets keep him around. I dont think he has any true desire to sport a Marlins uniform.
Your opinions?
Answer: I can see what you are getting at. Pedro is looking for a team badly and he wants to go back to the mets badly. I just don't see the mets going after him. Their rotation as is includes Johan Santana, John Maine, and Mike Pelfrey. The Mets will be having Tim Redding, Johnathan Niese, and Fernando Martinez fight for the last two spots. The Mets have been linked to Derek Lowe, Randy Wolf, and Oliver Perez for a spot in the rotation. All three of these pitchers are better than Pedro right now so if they sign one of them, they will have spots 1-4 secured and they will have the Redding, Niese, and Fernando duke it out for the last spot in the rotation.
Pedro has said supposedly that he is interested in being a Marlin. I mean he would fit in quite nice if I do say so myself. First, he would bring a veteren presence to a young pitching staff. He could teach the youngsters a thing or two about pitching. He brings world series and post season experience. Second, he would come cheap. After his season last year, he won't be asking for too much money. He would help keep the Marlins within a reasonable amount of money spent. Third, he still has some stuff left. I mean he isn't the same pedro as he was a few years ago thats for sure, but if he is healthy, he can give you pretty good quality starts. He would be more of a #3 or #4 starter for the Marlins.
I hope this helps!!

How much cash could the Florida MARLINS get for giving Miguel Cabrera and Hanley Ramirez to another team?
The reason I am asking this is because the Marlins could definitely use some money to fund the financing gap for a stadium in South Florida. As much as I admire these guys, there is no way the Marlins could sign them long term anyways, so if we could get a stadium deal done as a result of this trade, I think it would be worth it.
Cabrera and Ramirez, who are undoubtedly two of the best players in the world, should get a pretty high price. If this could be done, what do you think these guys would fetch, given their current contract status? And Im not talking about trading for another player and some cash--Im talking just a cash deal only.
Or can this even be done? I dont remember seeing any deals like this recently.
Answer: They would get a couple million, but they'd also get amzing young players if they made that trade.

How are the Miami MARLINS suddenly able to afford all these high tier free agents?
Last I knew, the Marlins were a small market team, now all of a sudden they are throwing money all over the place.
I always assumed that increased pay rolls were a result of ticket profit based on how well your team us doing, and as far as I know the Marlins have the worst fan base in the MLB.
How are they suddenly able to afford all these players? Is this coming out of the owners pocket? I didnt think that was even allowed.
Answer: Since they moved to Miami they sorta wanna advertise tickets by going on a high price shopping spree they said they wanna do a sorta Big 3 (Albert Pujols/ Prince Fielder, Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez) and say "Miami these are your Marlins" But this buying spree will help them proably get 1st or wild card for nl east if they get Pujols or Fielder because they'll try to get off to a great start to leave the Phillies in the dust(Main source of runs, Ryan Howard has achilles rupture and will likely be out until the All-Star break).

Does anyone understand why the MARLINS are building a new stadium?
I at the Astros game with some friends tonight and we had this discussion and none of us could understand why the Florida Marlins are building a new ballpark. They do not even sell half of their seats and average 16,000 tickets per game. And yet, we (the Astros) have worst record in baseball and sell over half of our stadium on average (avg of 25,000) and had 26K tonight. We get the whole Sun Life Stadium isnt theirs and all, but why not just move cities?
Answer: Generally, when a team moves from a dump (where the Marlins play now) to a nice stadium, attendance rises dramatically. The REASON Marlins' fans don't go to games is because the stadium is awful.

How do you feel the MARLINS will do the rest of the season?
I am a Marlins fan and of course we were victims of a perfect game tonight by Roy Halladay. Do you think the Marlins will fire Fredi Gonzalez soon? I feel he is not that great of a manager. How do you think they finish in the NL East?
Answer: i live in south florida i follow the Marlins they are my second team after the rays. 1st off there is a zero chance they will fire fredi gonzalez hes a good coach. the way he handled the hanley situation was perfect i gained a lot of for him. saying that he might not be back next due to the fact that the braves coaching job will be open and thats the organization he came from. now the Marlins are a good team but their starting pitching has been inconsistent especially nolasco last year his number were bd because according to babip (batting average on ball in play) he was the unluckiest pitchers last year but this year hes just not pitch that well they might have to send him down to the minors like they did last year. sanchez and josh johnson have been really good this year and along with the bullpen have been great. now the offense they have to get coghlin out of the lineup a spot start once in awhile they dont he got very luck last year according to his babip and its showing this year. they waited to long to get bonofacio out of the line up last year. i think they will make the transition when they bring up michael stanton up hes gonna be a great hitter along with hanley cantu and uggla(having a career year) they should have a great offense. now where they will finish its still early to tell but im gonna say the phils win the divison and i think it will be the braves and the Marlins competing for 1st. im still hoping for a Marlins rays world series.

What are your thoughts on the Rangers beating the MARLINS tonight and Michael Young setting a team record?
Side Question: Do you think the Angels are regretting letting Vladimir Guerrero go via free agency? This guy is playing great for Texas Right now.
Side Question 2: Do you see any way that the Marlins will make a push and make it into the postseason?
Answer: Young is a talented player who has been very reliable for the Rangers franchise over the years. It's only fitting that he now holds the record for most all-time hits in that club, and that he did so in memorable fashion: a 2 RBI single that lifted his team over the sizzling Marlins.
BQ: Absolutely. I think they were afraid that age and injury would decrease Guerrero's productivity, but try telling that to the guy now. A ton of homeruns, a leader in RBIs, a great BA......and then there's the Angels, who are struggling to stay above .500. I think it's safe to say that they miss him.
BQ2: Yeah, it's definitely a possibility. Despite spending so little $$$ to build on its roster, Florida has enough skill to convincingly earn a spot in the postseason. To do so, they'll need to keep their bats hot and work on the bullpen. If they can accomplish this, then they'll definitely become contenders.
