Hello, I just moved to a big apartment community in San Francisco. Its a two bedroom townhome (so two levels). I realized today that I didnt know where the fire alarm was, so I started to look. I was surprised that there was no fire alarm in the living room, or either of the 2 bedrooms; the only fire alarm is at the top of the stairs outside the bedrooms. Is this up to fire code standards? I was under the impression that there should be one downstairs in the living room and then one in each bedroom. Any help you can provide would be great!
Answer: Don't hesitate to ask you maintenance person. Some cities do not make their new codes retroactive. So an older building does not need to upgrade to new code. You can add your own smoke alarm if they will not improve the smoke/fire alarm. You could also check with the city fire department to see if they are inspected on a regular basis.

I understand that earthquakes happen in San Francisco and the earthquake causes fires, but how? how do the fires start?
Answer: the fires start because gas lines rupture. it is not a stove turning over that is the problem, rather gas lines that fueled the stoves breaking, which only a spark could ignite. furthermore, insurance companies don't pay on earthquake damage, so people set fire to their own homes to get it covered. (i lived in SF at one time and had insurance and asked about this and they told me that they wouldn't cover a fire resulting from an earthquake. guess things have changed). and also fires from people living in tent cities and cooking their foods and such outside. it is quite a windy city. and the other thing is that during major earthquakes the water lines break, so there is not much water to fight the fires. i've heard that they have boats now that pump water right out of the bay. i've seen them do demonstrations on 4th of july and such. earthquakes are scary as all get out, i've been through a few of them. it's like being in a fun house.

Should the San Francisco 49ers fire Mike Nolan?

Because right now, he is doing a terrible job. Against the Falcons on Sunday, he decided to kick a field goal rather than go for the touchdown on 4th & Goal.
Answer: Mike Nolan is doing a great job. The 49ers would be explosive if they wouldn't lose coordinator after coordinator. For a team that is rebuilding they sure have been pumping out the coordinators. The defense is looking very good (especially compared to last year), the offense is horrendous and right now Alex Smith is looking like a bust. The problem isn't within Mike Nolan, but mainly in the offensive coordinator. Doesn't seem to understand how to utilize the talent he has on the team. Why should they have gone for it on fourth and goal? They got nowhere on two attempts and then the third they lost yardage. It would be different if they were inches away and the offense actually produced, but with knowing that the offense is way out of whack and needing a hard three yards, it would of been a bad call. I'm a diehard 49er fan and I love what Nolan is doing for the franchise. If anyone that needs to be let go is either Hostler or the GM.

One of the many fires that later grew together to form the conflagration was supposedly caused by a woman cooking ham and eggs for breakfast. The "Ham and Eggs Fire" started near Hayes and Gough and burned through the Western Addition, City Hall, and parts of SOMA.

I have had bonfires at Ocean Beach before, but about a year ago they added the fire pits. However, when I get there, it is usually late, and therefore, there are no more pits available. What time should I arrive to be sure there will be a fire pit available? Does 8 oclock sound reasonable?

I recently read a novel about the 1906 SAN FRANCISCO FIRE, but I cant remember the title?

All I remember is that it was written by a film producer. It starts when the main character is young. To survive, he steals and along the way he makes a another friend in Chinatown. It follows him through the course of his life and he also falls in love with a woman. Do you know the title or author of this book?
