What time will the Total Lunar Eclipse will show on December 21st 2010 if I am in Eastern Time Zone?
Total eclipse Begins: 07:40:47 UT
UT= Universal Time, I want to make sure I get this right, I should be outside looking at the sky at 7:40:47 my time if I want to witness it?
Answer: 07:40 UT converts to 2:40 a.m. EST. Remember that the date changes at midnight, so this eclipse will be on the night of Monday December 20, but after midnight.
Actually the eclipse begins much earlier than that with first contact with the penumbral shadow at 29 minutes past midnight. The dark umbral shadow begins to cross the Moon at 01:32, but theshading of the eclipse will be obvious long before then. Totality is from 2:40 to 3:53, with greatest eclipse at 3:18. The end of the umbral phase is at 5:01 and the penumbral phase at 6:04 a.m.

what time should i drink the Total eclipse cleansing formula?
Answer: 2 hours before but looks like you already took the test. I dont trust those kinds of drinks because they usually say they "clean" the system when all most of them do is help cover it up and that makes me nervous. If you use synthetic urine it works. I used quick fix for 2 tests and passed fine but you would have to find a place near you that has it if you needed it in like 1 day or something because online would probably take a week to get mailed to you. I got it at a shop near me though but there was like only 1 shop that had it in my town.

What are the mathematical odds that in your lifetime a Total eclipse of the sun will happen on your birthday? I am just curious. My birthday is July 22 and there will be a Total eclipse of the sun that will be visible in Shanghai, China on July 22, 2009.
Answer: Solar eclipses happen on average every 18 months or so. Assuming an average age of 80 years this would mean 53 solar eclipses in your lifetime. As no day should be more likely than any other this gives odds of around 1 in 7. Unless, of course, you were born on Feb 29th.

TOTAL ECLIPSE?
hey i live in Maine, USA. and i was wondering if i would be able to see the Total eclipse in the beginning of august.
would i be able to see it?
and about what time would it be?
i live near Camden, Maine btw. its in the SE part of Maine on the coast.
Answer: You won't see either the total or partial eclipse from Camden, Maine. If you look closely at the map at http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEpubs/20080801/TSE2008fig/TSE2008-fig02a.GIF you can see that only northeast Maine will see a partial eclipse. Even from the far northeast, in Caribou for example, the partial phase will end at 5.30 a.m. which is only about 15 minutes after sunrise. At that time, the Sun will still be less than 2 degrees above the horizon.

When will the eclipse described in problem 9 next be total as seen from Canada?
Problem 9: A Total eclipse of the sun was visible from Canada on July 10, 1972. When did eclipse occur next with the same sun-moon-Earth geometry? From what part of Earth was it total?
Answer: This eclipse is part of a family of eclipses called a Saros, they occur every 18 years, and 11 1/3 days. So the next eclipse would have occured on July 21, 1990 in eastern Asia
It was part of Saros 126, the next eclipse was in fact July 22,1990 (due to the international dateline) and it appeared total over eastern Russia

What is the maximum (theoretical) duration of both a total and an annular solar eclipse?
I have found several values for the maximum possible Total eclipse on the Internet (7mins 31sec, 7min 40sec and 7min 45sec seem the most popular) but none for the maximum possible annular. I need to know that the answers I get are reliable though, so please dont just quote a value youve found elsewhere - I need to know how you have derived your answer! Im also not interested in the longest values that have occurred throughout history (or will occur in the future) as there are lots of lists of those. What I am after is the duration(s) that would occur if all factors leading to long times were present simultaneously, ignoring the fact that they could not do so in reality. On the other hand the scenarios must be realistic, so such things as orbital tilts and orbital times and distances must be possible, though not necessarily at the same time of course. Dont worry about giving a complex answer as Im reasonably at home with the concepts of planetary geometry etc. Thanks!
And in response to robdunf, there is a great deal of difference between taking physically possible parameters and combining them in a way that, as it happens, would not occur in practice and just inventing parameters in order to get any old result! Sensible answers only from now on please.
Answer: According to Jan Meeus, a Belgian astronomer who specializes in this sort of thing (frequency of conjunctions, types of eclipses, etc) the longest possible solar eclipse is 7 minutes 50.7 seconds, noted in a couple articles that have appeared in Sky & Telescope magazine over the years. For annular, the shortest is given as 0.1 seconds in connection with one a few years ago, again in S&T mag. The longest would be Earth at perihelion, Moon at aphelion, but I've not seen any figures for duration. Probably on the order of one minute.

What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?
There is a Total eclipse coming up in August for parts of Russia and China, there are other places as well but I dont know where. I was reading an article about how there will be four planets visible during the eclipse. What I want to know is, does the eclipse magnify these planets so you can view them with the naked eye or does it just expose the area of the planet in darkness long enough that you could view them through a telescope?
Answer: The four planets which will be visible during the solar eclipse on August 1 are Mercury, Venus, Saturn, and Mars. These four planets are always visible to the naked eye in a dark sky, so their visibility has absolutely nothing to do with the eclipse. All that happens during the eclipse is that the shadow of the Moon darkens the sky so that the normal scattered blue light is missing, and the planets are thus visible during the day. In fact, with a telescope pointed at exactly the right spot, all of these planets are also visible anywhere any time in a blue sky. Certainly, I've observed both Mercury and Venus many times in daylight with telescopes. All the eclipse does is to improve the contrast by darkening the sky.
[Edit] Tina is right on when she describes the sky during an eclipse as a weird sort of twilight. Unlike what a couple of others said, the sky does NOT become totally dark during an eclipse. The sky is still light near the horizon, and even close to the Sun it is a deep twilight blue, not black. It's obvious that Tina and I are the only answerers who have actually _seen_ a Total eclipse, albeit on opposite sides of the Mediterranean in 2006 (I was in Libya, Tina was in Turkey). That was a great eclipse, wasn't it, Tina?

TOTAL ECLIPSE ?
Here is the summary of Gravitational Forces of Sun - Moon, Earth - Moon during Total eclipse when the Moon is between Sun and Earth.
F = GMm/r^2
Sun ----------------------------------- Moon ------------ Earth
S-M = 4.1984 x 10^20 M- E = 2.2 x 10^20
Net force on the Moon = 4.1984 x 10^20 Minus 2.2 x 10^20 = 1.998 x 10^20 towards Sun
At this point why earth force the moon to revolve around its centre when there is no force from the earth side . Net gravitational force on the moon is towards the sun not towards the earth ?
Answer: Both earth and moon are constantly revolving around the sun. They are also revolving around their common center of gravity as they move around the sun, but they constantly move around the sun.
Their speed of revolution and the vast amount of angular momentum keeps them from simply dropping like proverbial rocks into the sun.
Think of astronauts aboard the Space Station. They are weightless, yet they are just a hundred miles or so farther from the center of the earth than you and me. Why? Why don't they fall?
The answer is that they ARE falling. But as fast as they fall, their momentum has carried them forward so that they endlessly fall around the earth, not into it. The same with the earth and moon, relative to the sun, during a Total eclipse and at all other times.

Can there be a total solar eclipse in Ohio?
My dad and I are arguing about this. He says that with the Earths tilt that we would be able to see a Total eclipse, but I thought that you could only see a Total eclipse at the equator, or near it.
Answer: You can see a total solar eclipse anywhere.
All that happens is the Moon's shadow falls on the Earth. It only happens a few times a year. At most new moons, the Moon's shadow misses the earth and passes above or below it. So when it hits the Earth, it can do so anywhere, from one pole to the other.

Is there different variations of a TOTAL ECLIPSE?
In other words, is the position of the moon during a Total eclipse exactly on the same spot everytime? I have heard of an annular eclipse in which the moon appears smaller leaving a thick ring around the moons shadow. I was thinking maybe there was variations in between the two that are visible to, maybe, a high precision instrument since every Total eclipse to the naked eye is exactly the same.
Sorry i meant variation in position as in distance.
Answer: There's a range of possible distances (hence apparent sizes) of the Sun and Moon. If the Moon appears smaller than the Sun, there is an annular eclipse and if larger, there is a Total eclipse. The Moon's apparent angular diameter can range from 29.3 to 34.1 arcminutes and the Sun's from 31.5 to 32.5 arcminutes. So the Moon can appear up to 8% larger than the Sun and the Sun can appear up to 11% larger than the Moon.
Variations in annular eclipses are usually obvious because of the size of the ring of unblocked sunlight. Variations in Total eclipses are not quite so obvious. The Moon's size at its largest might be enough to block solar prominences from view at least during part of the eclipse.

When will the next TOTAL ECLIPSE visible from Scotland occur?
When is the next date on which a total solar eclipse can be seen from Scotland?
Answer: Scotland is having a bad spell for Total eclipses at the moment. The last Total eclipse visible from mainland Scotland was in 1699. The Total eclipse of 30th June 1954 was visible in the Shetland Islands, but the next Total eclipse on the mainland won't be until 3rd June 2133, visible in the far north west around Cape Wrath. To make up for this 434 year gap, the next Total eclipse will follow 2 years later on 7th October 2135. There is a map showing these two eclipses at http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEatlas/SEatlas3/SEatlas2121.GIF

In Ramadan, if a TOTAL ECLIPSE coincided with the onset of the fast, what happens?
Im just curious. Does the timing of the morning meal relate to the light visible or to the time that the sun is due to rise? Similarly, if there is a Total eclipse during the day, can people eat and drink during the period of darkness? Has it ever happened?
Answer: The light does appear from the Sun even when there's a total-eclipse. It is generally in the form of a ring /circle. So you do come to know that the Sun has risen and to begin fasting. And similar is the case at the time of dusk.
Yes, of course, Fasting starts with the early appearance of Sunlight and it has to be physical but it doesn't mean that you're not aware of the fact that the Sun has risen.
And when there might be a situation (which is most unlikely) that there might Total-eclipse in the entire day, it will never appear as total darkness and you would know that the day has started.
In faith & belief much rests on your personal intentions indeed.

Can a total solar eclipse happen directly over the north pole?
Im just curious as to whether this can happen and, if it cant, how close the Total eclipse would be the the north pole.
Answer: The north pole is tilted towards the Sun between March and September, so there's no reason why the Moon's shadow can't fall on the north pole during that period. The shadow would have to fall at a slanting angle because the Sun and Moon can never be overhead at the north pole.
Here is a map showing 1000 years of Total eclipse tracks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Total_Solar_Eclipse_Paths-_1001-2000.gif
You can see that many of them cover the north pole. Antarctica isn't quite so well covered because Total eclipses are more common during the northern hemisphere summer, when the Earth is farthest from the Sun, thus the Sun appears smaller and is more likely to be completely covered by the Moon.

How often does a total lunar eclipse occur?
how often does a Total eclipse occur? is it about 6 or 7 years?
Answer: Hi Gahlo!
Lunar eclipses are a lot more common than every six or seven years.
There MUST be at least one lunar eclipse of some kind every six months. The last was March 3rd. The next will be August 28th. Then February 21st, 2008. And so on. All three of these will be Total eclipses, by the way. And not everyone in the world sees every Total eclipse.
Not all lunar eclipses are total. The August 16, 2008 eclipse will be a partial lunar eclipse, in which some parts of the moon get into the earth's dark shadow, but not all. Others are penumbral, when none of the lunar disc is in the dark, but some parts of the moon see a partial eclipse of the sun.
Usually, the longest you can go without a Total eclipse of the moon is about two years 10 months. Normally, but not always, about 3 or 4 Total eclipses of the moon happen in a row, each 6 months apart. Then, there's a drought lasting about 2 years 9 months, in which 4 or 5 lunar eclipses in a row are partial or penumbral, not total. Then another total series starts.
