Is it normal for BELLS PALSY to worsen over time?
My 4 year old son was diagnosed wih Bells palsy yesterday, he was checked over by a peadiatrician and sent home. Today the weakness on the left side of his face has worsened. Is it normal for symptons to get worse before getting better?
Answer: You should take him to a different pediatrician. Bells palsy can sometimes resolve itself, but it usually requires treatment via antivirals and/or steroids. If left untreated it could end up permanent / for life and that's no fun. There could be other reasons which the doctor could evaluate to rule out, such as a problem in the brain.

BELLS PALSY??
I was diagnosed with Bells palsy after I had my daughter. I didnt have any drugs during my delivery and she was almost 9 lbs. Could it have been caused by the strain in my facial muscles from pushing so hard? What about stress from sleep deprevation and keeping up with a 4 yr old as well. Im on a cuople different medications that are for viruses. I have had mouth sores since as far back as I can remember-could the whole thing with my delivery and stress have affected the herpes virus? Anyone know of some home remedies? I have been taking b12 vitamins, my prenatal, womens daily vitamins. My mother who had it many years ago in Mexico has a remedy of carrot juice with yerba buena plant that she swears works but who knows. Unfortunatly, there isnt a whole lot of research on this condition.
Answer: Bell's palsy involves paralysis (may be cause of inflammation/ trauma) of the facial nerve which supplies the muscles of the face on one side. The inflammation may result from a middle ear infection, viral infection, chilling of the face, or tumor. The observable result is smoothing of the face on the affected side owing to loss of muscle action, the eye on the affected side remaining open and the lower eyelid sagging. There is also inability to wink, whistle, purse the lips(resulting a slurred speech), or wrinkle the forehead. The mouth droops, and it and the nose may deviate to the opposite side. 90% of patients having complete recovery within 2-8 weeks. Facial sensation on the affected side is lost, and taste sensation is lost as well.
As a physical therapist, during acute stages, patients with bell's palsy are ask to rest. After a few days facial muscle massage is done to increase the blood circulation in the face. Facial muscle exercises is also done, like raising of eyebrows, smiling pouting your lips, etc... Bell's palsy is still said to be idiopathic, meaning it cannot really be explain why and how it started or how you acquire it but it is said that it is common in women during/after pregnancy. Maybe it has something to do with our hormones.

What is the cause of BELLS PALSY, what are the symptoms of BELLS PALSY and how long does it last?
What is the cause of Bells palsy, how long does it last?
Answer: Sorry to see that you may have a go with Bells palsy. I had it myself.
It is caused my a virus such as the cold or flu or by trauma to the seventh cranial nerve. Pregnant women and those that are diabetic are more predisposed. I got it after a horrible cold or maybe the flu. There is some research now that also links Bells palsy to certain herpes strains.
Symptoms usually effect only one side of the face. They will never effect parts of the body like an arm etc. So if you are having numbness anywhere other than the face seek medical attention.
Mine started with a crooked smile and by the next day I couldnt even close my eye as the paralysis had spread to my eye. I had tingling, twitching, and my face hurt like I had been hit by a brick wall. My eye would not close and it watered very much. My nose ran like I was getting horrible allergies a well. My speech became a little off. The mouth does not make as much spit on the affected side. Essentially the whole side of my face eventually looked saggy.
Mine lasted a long while. I swear by vitamin B therapy mentioned here. I used it along with the antiviral and steroids prescribed. You should check it out :-) Hope you feel better soon.

Is it common with BELLS PALSY for the affected side of your face and neck to ache?
I have had Bells palsy 7 times (Im 20 years old) and this time it seems like my neck and the right (affected side) of my chest are aching very badly. Its day 4. Usually when I have it, itll last for about 6 weeks and always starts with numb tongue. But Ive never had the aching in my face, neck, and upper right chest before. Its not a muscle aching but a distinct "my nerves are hurting" ache. Help?
Answer: Although defined as a mononeuritis (involving only one nerve), patients diagnosed with Bell’s palsy may have "myriad neurological symptoms" including "facial tingling, moderate or severe headache/neck pain, memory problems, balance problems, that are "unexplained by facial nerve dysfunction". This is yet an enigmatic facet of this condition.
your symptoms may be part of the "many neurological symptoms" that can occur in this disease. Have you discussed this with a Doctor. 7 times seems like a lot.

BELLS PALSY?
A friend of mine has developed Bells palsy this past weekend. She is scared and they told her it would get worse for a month and then get better for a month. Can anyone recommend how I can help her or offer stories of hope to share with her?
Thank you!
Answer: I had it twice. It rarely ever comes back. The most uncomfortable thing is the dry eyelid from not blinking. Use "Lacrilube". Especially during the night.
The thing is - it goes away and very rarely leaves any residual effect. Facial massages are good.
It's not as bad as it seems at first.

What is BELLS PALSY and how can it be treated and cured?
I just got word that one of my relatives has been diagnosed with Bells palsy. I know very little about this condition? What are the syptoms? How can one get better? How can a doctor help? What are the long range challenges? Can one still have a quality of life? Is this cureable and if not how can this condition be managed.
Answer: Bells palsy is chacterized by lack of muscular control on one side of the face. it's caused by a malfunction of the facial nerve. Someone with Bells palsy might have problems smiling completely, or it might look like one side of their face doesn't move. If you've ever seen batman, imagine "two-face". It's completely painless, and is sometimes more of just an annoyance than a real problem.
There's still a big debate about what causes it, but some studies indicate that EBV (the virus that causes mono), Herpes and Lyme disease might be a cause. Generally it tends to go away on it's own in a few weeks to a few months. There are not many treatments for this. I generally tell my patients to wait a month and see how it goes, unless it's severe and they have problems eating and such. Then i usually prescribe steroid medications.
It shouldn't affect the quality of someone. They might drool a bit at first, or have some problems eating, but they should get used to it very soon. As I said, symptoms generally disappear within a few weeks to a few months

How often is BELLS PALSY a symptom of lyme disease? How accurate are blood tests for lyme disease?
My son was put on steroids after being diagnosed with Bells palsy. Since he was bite by a deer tick 5 months before any symptoms I am worried he has lyme disease. The blood test was completed and came out negitive. Could the steroids have caused a false negitive?
Answer: aaargh!! DEB- FIRST, TAKE YOUR KID OFF ALL STEROIDS UNTIL LYME DISEASE IS RULED OUT BY A QUALIFIED [LYME-LITERATE] DOCTOR!! Why? Steroid use can lead to PERMANENT neurological damage if the disease IS present & allowed to get into places where it normally couldn't, due to the local immune-response suppression that steroids cause. {sigh} PLEASE take heed of this warning.
Now... Bells palsy is not a "common" symptom but not rare either, though it occurs more in children, and especially when the bite is in the head/ neck area.
As far as the accuracy of Blood tests for Lyme, they are woefully inadequate & miss ABOUT 1/2 the actual cases of Lyme. (I hate having to repeat this over & over, but do some research. It's sadly true.)
Lyme disease remains a clinical diagnosis (see CDC & even IDSA guidelines). The typical ELISA test relies on the body's ability to generate sufficient antibodies to the Lyme spirochete PIECES to be detected by the test. Sometimes there aren't enough...for various reasons.
Finally, steroids can suppress immune response, but I haven't heard that they particularily interfere with the common blood tests for Lyme.
(Oh... and My neurological Lyme symptoms started 4 months after the tick bite. A very common period of time, as I understand.)

I want to know if exposure to extreme cold can cause BELLS PALSY?
I recently went to the US and in a few days was found to have Bells palsy. I would like to know if exposure to extremely low temperatures (0 to 4 degrees) can cause Bells palsy. I had symptoms of loss of taste buds in my tongue about 3 weeks before this problem was diagnosed. I want to know if the loss of taste which I had 3 weeks back is linked to the same problem. Was that a starting symptom for this problem.
Answer: I have had Bells palsy since May 2007.
I still have the bitter and metallic taste in my mouth at times. The loss of taste buds can be very frustrating.
I have spoken with many and was even told by one of my doctors that some believe exposure to cold can bring on this disorder. The literal translation of Bells palsy in Chinese even means "wind attack".
Also, many who suffer with Bells palsy get it after some sort of viral infection. I had what I thought was the flu and was only getting over it when my Bells palsy reared its ugly head. Current research shows that there many be a connection to the chickenpox virus or a strain of the herpes virus.
My starting symptom was a severe headache days before paralysis began. I then had twitching in my face that was more aggravating than anything else that preceded the paralysis.
I hope you get better soon. Heres an article if your interested that talks about vitamin B-12 therapy. I used this myself and feel it truly sped my healing process along.
