Could the government or anyone have stopped what happened in JONESTOWN?
Im watched CNN about people escaping Jonestown. It makes me think of Waco, TX (I watched that on TV when it happened). There was news media involved in the last few days. Why didnt our military or govt go in earlier? How can cults like these exist for so many years and generations without our govt intervening? Thousands of lives could have been saved. Im afraid it will happen again, soon.
Your input?
Answer: I watched a docu-special on MSNBC on that, today. America didn't believe the people who defected from your group at first. And on the surface, it seemed like a positive place to live if that's the existence you long for. I can't see how they could have done much. When that congressman and his staff went there, look what happened to them. But it was kind of dumb of them to go with no weapons and no protection.
Sad, sad moment in time...

What was the demographics of the people that died in JONESTOWN?
I cant seem to find information on the demographics of members of the Peoples Temple in Jonestown. I want to know all sort of information such as age, race and sex. This is for a psychology research paper that I want to write. I need to know a place that I can start looking before I go to my schools research library.
Answer: San Diego State University has the best site on the web about Jonestown. Link below.
From SDSU:
"As Jim had done in the United States, he made Jonestown an interracial and intergenerational community. “Regarding the demographic composition of this community, 75 percent were black, 20 percent were white, and 5 percent were Hispanic, Asian, and Native Americans; approximately, two-thirds were women, almost 300 were under the ace of eighteen, and over 150 were seniors over the age of sixty-five.”

For those of u who know about JONESTOWN what is your opinion of it?
I have studied a lot about Jonestown. It was the largest mass suicide-murder in history. I am interested in how so many people could have been brainwashed by Jim Jones SR. I have watched the video of it and Im in shock. What are your thoughts on Jonestown? How would u have felt if someone had told u that it was time 2 die and 2 allow someone 2 take your kids out of your arms and feed them poisoned kool-aid?
Answer: Jim Jones was a sick man. He should have been killed long before he killed all those people. The part that was the most shocking for me was when he threw the bible across his followers and said that because he didn't get struck down that he was truly God. That's pure evil right there. There is no way in this world that someone especially not him would take my child out of my arms and kill them. I would have killed him before he killed my child. It's amazing how one person can fool so many people into believing that he is the savior. However, everyone knows he got by with it because he had people on the side that he had pretending they were sick and afflicted and then they were healed. So other people who didn't know that thought that he was a true healer. I believe that he went to hell when he died and that if he hadn't of died then someone would have gotten him. The survivors is what amazes me the most. They had some terrible things to go through and losing their children and their husband and wives and how they still are able to live their lives amazes me. Those are some strong people to have been through what they have. I watched the video also and it broke my heart to see those kids laying dead with their parents. That is real footage that the Army took when they came in to take the bodies away. I was in total shock. Jim Jones wanted to make an impression that stayed and he certainly did that and fooled a lot of people into going with him in death but he was nuts by that point anyway.

Why didnt Congressman Leo Ryan bring any security when he visited JONESTOWN?
I have seen two documentaries on the tragedy at Jonestown and Jim Jones "Peoples Temple." When Congressman Leo Ryan went down to Jonestown to investigate that people werent being mistreated or abused by Jones and was killed in the process, why did he not have any security with him? I always thought Congresspeople had bodyguards when out in public, especially when traveling. I commend Congressman Ryan for caring so much for his constituents, but Im not 100% clear on why he went down there without bodyguards.
Answer: Everyone underestimated how insane Jim Jones was and no one was prepared for what was about to happen. Who would have ever imagined a "religious" leader would poison over 900 people with koolaid.

I assumed they didnt have access to outsiders. I guess I will just have to watch the whole thing again if I cant get an answer.
Answer: Some of his constituents asked for his help. When Jones moved his peoples temple operation to guyana there were a lot of children involved. A number of his constituents were former peoples temple members whose spouses and children remained in peoples temple. when they went to Guyana, these people lost contact with their children.

Jonestown's Final Horror
BYLINE: By Charles A. Krause; The accompanying articles are excerpted from the new paperback book, "Guyana Massacre: The Eyewitness Account," by Washington Post correspondent Krause, who survived the attack that killed Rep. Leo J. Ryan and four others at the Port Kaituma airstrip, and Post editors Stern and Harwood. The Stern-Harwood article is based on reporting from Georgetown by Post correspondent Leonard Downie Jr.
SECTION: Outlook; C1
LENGTH: 2079 words
FROM THE AIR, Jonestown looked as if someone had scattered colored paper around the central pavilion -- as if there had been a celebration, a party, that the Rev. Jim Jones had uncharacteristically allowed his followers to enjoy -- without forcing them to clean up.
Those were my first thoughts as I returned to Jonestown on Monday, Nov. 20, just 48 hours after I had left for what I thought then would surely be the last time.
Now, I was on my way back, by helicopter, to view a sight that would transfix a world inured to war and violence and death. The absolute horror of what lay below, the madness and desperation of the man who ordered it all and the almost banal way he caused them to die -- a potion of grape drink, cyanide and tranquilizers -- was almost beyond comprehension.
There on the ground, as we hovered overhead, were the grisly remains of Jones' last great act of madness. There on the ground were the men, women and children, white and black, well educated and untutored, who had believed blindly in the man they called "Father."
There on the ground were the bodies, already beginning to decompose in the tropical heat, of those who had followed Jones to the wilderness. The bodies of those who had, many of them voluntarily, carried out Jones' last twisted vision, the victims of what Father called "revolutionary suicide" and had code-named "White Night."
As the first reporter allowed into Jonestown to view the carnage, my job demanded that I bring back a detailed account of what had happened and try to find words to describe the horror that I saw.
Because I was a survivor of the Port Kaituma massacre, there were personal reasons for going back as well. I was hoping not to find the bodies of some of the people I had grown found of during my short stay at Jonestown, people like Sarah and Richard Tropp, whose unselfish and rational reasons for wanting to create a better world in the rain forests of Guyana had touched me.
And, quite truthfully, I was also going back to see for myself that Jim Jones and the henchmen he had sent to kill me and the others in Rep. Leo J. Ryan's party were among the dead. I particularly wanted to find the body of Tom Kice Sr., the tall, gray haired man with a crew cut, whose mean, demented expression I will never forget as he crossed the airstrip to kill us, and the body of Stanley Gieg, the young, blond-haired fellow who was driving the tractor when the shooting began.
AS I APPROACHED the radio shack near the pavilion, I saw the bodies close up for the first time. There must have been 40 or 50 of them there on the neat lawn in front of the communications center that had been Jonestown's link to Georgetown, San Francisco and the outside world.
I only recognized one of the bodies, that of a jovial, heavyset white woman who had served me coffee and cheese sandwiches two days before. She had introduced me to her daughter, a pretty girl with long brown hair, and we had laughed together about something I can no longer remember.
Now I saw the mother's body near the radio shack. She was still wearing the gaily flowered long dress she had worn the last time I saw her alive. She was, like most of the others, lying on her stomach, a clot of dried blood stuck in her right nostril. My God, I thought. Why?
I stared at the clumps of bodies in front of the communications center. I couldn't bring myself to leave them. I noticed that many of them had died with their arms around each other, men and women, white and black, young and old. Little babies were lying on the ground, too. Near their mothers and fathers. Dead.
Finally, I turned back toward the main pavilion and noticed the dogs that lay dead on the sidewalk. The dogs, I thought. What had they done?
Then I realized that Jones had meant to leave nothing, not even the animals, to bear witness to the final horror. There were to be no survivors. Even the dogs and Mr. Muggs, Jonestown's pet chimpanzee, had their place in the long white night into which the Peoples Temple had been ordered by the mad Mr. Jones.
THE HEAT and the stench were overpowering. There was nothing to drink because Jones had ordered the community water supply contaminated with poson. The Guyanese soldiers who guarded Jonestown said that a cache of soft drinks had been found. But they decided, even though the bottles hadn't been opened, that it would be risky to drink them.

I want to know the incident happen in Guyana called mass muder in JONESTOWN?
My point is why people from outside the Jonestown did not know something going to happen. Why police or other people did not attack try to stop before the incident or why government of guyana stop doing this in thier own country. And why US government stop in first place.
And I hate this kind of cult such as scientology.
Answer: Be sure to be well fed and rested.
The families of these victims tried very hard to get the government to listen to them about this cult. The cult got some bad press and they left the country. The cult thought that would put them beyond the reach of the families of the victims and the US government. The families voices were loud and they did get one member of congress to start looking into this cult (btw, the scientology also had this congress member on their tail also.) But it was too late. Jim Jones knew they were coming down. So his sick mind took the lives of many, not only members of his cult, but the others that were trying to help the victims of this cult.
It angers me that the Scientologists on here are trying to place the blame elsewhere. They should be ashamed. This was a cult much like their own and their leader lead them to kill themsevles. They need to learn the truth.
We fight for you. I fight for your freedom.
I can google, why cant you?

Was there a reason that the ones in the JONESTOWN Massscre were all mostly facedown dead?
I have seen alot of photographs of the dead people of the Jonestown Massacre.
The thing I keep wondering is why are they mostly all perfectly lying faced down? They seem to have put themselves in that position before dying. And many are next to eachother in a near perfect row, I assume are close family and friends.
Was there a reason to this?
Answer: First you have to know (or maybe you already do), Jonestown was a cult properly named as 'People's Temple'. What transpired in Jonestown in 1978 was done willingly by followers of said cult and it was mass suicide. I think that they believed that if they committed suicide that they would get into Heaven and be near God.
You also should note that Jones who was the leader of the cult had absolutely no theological background... he made people believe in him by his religious and socialist beliefs. He got people believing in him so much that families of loved ones were forced to call the U.S government rescue agency to report what they believed to be brainwashed people. And in a way they were right.
Well what happened on the day of the Jonestown Massacre is a real mystery to police. However this much is known about what happened before they died. *Jones followers all 912 of them decided to give their lives to the cause because they believed that they had to sacrifice themselves. You must remember that Jones had members of his own cult murdered for escaping on a plane... and all because they wanted to return from the trip the whole cult went on.*
*Jones followers, the ones that remained tragically loyal to him were given a deadly drink that was purple with cyanide, sedatives, and tranquilizers and this combination proved to be deadly. While Cyanide is a deadly poison that when ingested causes the person to have an almond smell to their body and a horrible smile fixed onto their faces the mixture probably had other deadly drugs added into it. Jones supposedly went on and shot himself in the head.
So in answer to your question... the reason why everybody was lying face down dead is because poison does that to you. Plus the police suspect that the massacre was played out so many times between the cult members that it was kind of like a role play of some sorts. Cyanide in large doses can kill a person within hours, days, or even weeks... however add into the mix sedatives and tranquilizers and you get a deadly and lethal combination of poison that can cause death within minutes.

Is JONESTOWN an example of the horrific effects of social control?
do you think the story of the colt of Jonestown is a horrific example of the negative aspects of social control? If so, how?
social control : mechanisms or processes that regulate individual and group behavior, leading to conformity and compliance to the rules of a given society, state, or social group.
Answer: Absolutely not. Jim Jones was a psycho maniac who use HIS OWN form of social control to take over peoples minds in order to follow him. He was just another psycho who used his persuasive skills to gain power (much like Hitler, Stalin, etc.) so in this case, no i dont believe the story of Jonestown was an example of social control.

How to prove this thesis about JONESTOWN?
I have to write a research paper tonight about Jonestown, and I had to base it around a controversial thesis. I thought I would say that he was crazy, but also intelligent and manipulative. What can I say to prove this? Thanks.
Answer: Sociopathic behavior is not an indication of stupidity. James Jones was a very intelligent person, starting from an young age when he graduated early with honors from high school. You can look at his career before People's Temple and Jonestown and see his intelligence at work. He was involved in desegregation attempts in Indianapolis and Democratic politics in San Francisco, gaining the attention of Walter Mondale and Rosalynn Carter. My suggestion is to go the Wikipedia article and start exploring the themes found there. Wikipedia might not be a good reference in regards to papers, but it can often point to ideas and sources that can further your argument. As for being manipulative, Jones was a former member of the American Communist Party and once said that he realized the path to Communism in the United States was through religion.
