Romney Is Winner In New Hampshire Blunting Attacks
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Mitt Romney swept to victory in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, turning back a ferocious assault from rivals who sought to disqualify him in the eyes of conservatives, in a contest that failed to anoint a strong opponent to slow his march to the Republican nomination. Mr. Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, won by - Mitt Romney wins the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire, turning back ferocious assault from rivals who sought to disqualify him in the eyes of conservatives; wins by double-digit margin that validates his strategy; candidates who had hoped to use the primary to emerge as his leading rival fared poorly, leaving a fractured Republican opposition. Move the CA primary for the 2012 presidential election to 12:00 AM on the morning after election day, 2008?
Of couse my question is idiotic. Florida just announced that it wants to move its primary to January 29th, ahead of the primaries on February 5th. We have this "my state is bigger than, more important than, more influencial than your state!" thing going on. Why not just mandate that ALL states must hold all primaries on the same day? That would eliminate the stupid interstate pissing contest. Then mini-populated Wyoming will have their primary on the same day as California, which has a population and economy bigger than many countries, and is way the hell more powerful than Florida.
Answer: I share your frustration!
I remember the elections of 1976 through 1992. There was some activity in the year before election year, but the concept of having one or two primaries every week or two for several months in the winter and spring was a very good one. Candidates got to work on their message and speak to relatively small populations, and we got a chance to see them in action. If someone faltered, they would fade. And other candidates could develop and shine.
I am in New Jersey, and yes - most years we had no effect, because our primary was in June. Maybe a rotating system would be good - some states go early some years, some go first other years.
But it seems other states were jealous that Iowa and New Hampshire got all the attention (and "tourist" dollars) by being first, and that these states had so much effect. But the "national primary" in early February next year is a terrible idea. Candidates will not meet with the people, just run ads. And they will need tons of money to run them, meaning that they have to raise money rather than actually listen to the electorate. And what are they to do between February and the conventions? Worst of all, the system doesn't allow many candidates to shine - just the super-organized and calculating ones who have the money to get in early. But what if the front-runner in February is a dud? Is the party stuck with him or her through the fall? And will the country be stuck with two lousy choices?
WHAT'S THE RUSH?!
Thanks for letting me vent.

For the 2012 Election would you favor regional primaries and have it settled by Memorial Day?
Are you in favor of having regional primaries so that way no one can jump ship like we seen with Mich and Florida this year? How would you go about setting it up? Would you have Iowa and New Hampshire lead off or have a regional area lead off the campaign in 2012?
Answer: I would prefer to have the primaries limited to 2 months,
and the WHOLE process limited to under a year.

How Much the Latino vote will shape the 2012 Republican primary in Florida? Are the Latinos more for Romney?
Answer: Romney’s support appears to be driven by the state’s most influential Latino Republican voting bloc, Cuban-Americans. Among Florida Latinos of Cuban origin — a group that constitutes around 540,000 of the state’s 1.5 million Latino voters — Romney leads Gingrich by 32 points, 49 percent to 17 percent.
Though Latinos only constitute 11 percent of the Florida GOP primary electorate, they have the power to swing the contest. In 2008 Romney lost the Florida primary to Sen. John McCain after the Arizona lawmaker won 54 percent of the Latino vote compared to Romney’s 14 percent — the Cuban population sided with McCain 52 percent to 13 percent.
But this time around Romney has secured the endorsement of a slew of key Florida Republicans with Cuban roots, such as Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, and former Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, a lineup that featured in a Spanish-language ad that the former Massachusetts governor released in the state.
“Romney leads Gingrich … in Florida. That may be an effect of the endorsements of the three Latino Republican members of Congress,” said Segura.
Puerto Ricans, who constitute the second-largest faction of Florida Latinos — numbering around 480,000, also back Romney over Gingrich, but only by a 10-point margin, 22 percent to 12 percent. Latino voters who hail from other places, like Central and South America, also back Romney 29 percent to 21 percent.

Should the winner of the Florida GOP primary get all the delegates, or just enough to reflect their vote %?
Florida was going to have winner-take-all primary, but now some want to make proportional, so that that the percentage of delegates a candidate get is the same as the percentage of votes they receive. (Get 27% of the votes, receive 27% of the delegates.)
Winner-take-all primaries tend to end quickly, shutting a lot of states and voters out of the process (like the Republicans in 2008) while proportional primaries can lead to long, protracted battles.
Which do you think would be better?
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpolitics/2012/01/florida-primary-delegate-drama-winner-take-all-or-proportional-delegates.html
Answer: The delegates should be apportioned to reflect the percentage that they achieved. Especially important in primaries (like the ones so far this year) where the winner did not even achieve a majority!
Then we should do the same with the Electoral College!

you need like 1144 delegates to win! Florida primary has 50 at stake! but Paul is betting on Nevada!
We are still in the game!
