Answer: It's a scam. And a well known one to boot. Do not contact these people in any way whatsoever. Any legitimate lottery or agent thereof would never contact you by email. Period. This is the second most common financial scam email after the Nigerian Finance scam and it's variants. They want money. Barring that, they want personal information. At the very least confirmation that your email address is live so they can send you more spam. At the very least delete it. Better yet, report it to your mail provider or follow the advice given on some of these sites.

I have got a mail from Yahoo! Groups that I am a yahoo LOTTERY WINNER & will get 50000 pound. Is it true?
I have got a mail from Yahoo! Groups that I am a yahoo Lottery winner & will get 50000 pound. For that I need to send 500 dollar by western union or moneygram so that they can proceed in regards. I am confused. Please tell is it fake or true?
Answer: 100% scam.
There is no lottery.
There is no Yahoo, Coca-Cola, MSN, Microsoft, BMW or any other company in the entire world that sponsors a lottery that notifies winners via email.
There is only a scammer trying to steal your hard-earned money.
The next email will be from another of the scammer's fake names and free email addresses pretending to be the "lottery official" and will demand you pay for made-up fees and taxes, in cash, and only by Western Union or moneygram.
Western Union and moneygram do not verify anything on the form the sender fills out, not the name, not the street address, not the country, not even the gender of the receiver, it all means absolutely nothing. The clerk will not bother to check ID and will simply hand off your cash to whomever walks in the door with the MTCN# and question/answer. Neither company will tell the sender who picked up the cash, at what store location or even in what country your money walked out the door. Neither company has any kind of refund policy, money sent is money gone forever.
Now that you have responded to a scammer, you are on his 'potential sucker' list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of great jobs, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram.
You could post up the email address and the emails themselves that the scammer is using, it will help make your post more googlable for other suspicious potential victims to find when looking for information.
Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don't bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn't worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.
Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

How is the percentage of a single winning lottery figured out if you are a single winner in your own state?
I have tried to figure out how and what all is taken out of a Lottery winners winnings. I have seen on TV that some single winners in their own state who have won over 300 million dollars, and end up with only about 30 million, how is this possible.
Answer: The big 300-million dollar jackpots are for games like Mega Millions and PowerBall. These are multi-state drawings.
So there might be only 1 winner from Iowa, but for that same 300-million dollar prize, there might also be 1 winner from California and 1 winner from Florida. (I'm just making up any states.)
So the person from Iowa wins only 100-million. They take the "lump sum" which means they get only 1/2 of it right now rather than the whole thing over 20 years. Now they are down to 50 million. From that, the government takes 20 million in taxes, leaving them with only 30 million dollars.
******GOOD NEWS*******
You will NEVER have to worry about this problem because you will NEVER, ever, ever, ever, EVER win a big jackpot prize. I won't ever win one either! This is the truth. Buy just ONE ticket once in a while for the dream of "winning it big". Any more money spent is a total waste.

Some people are unhappy about this and want to know who won.
I wonder if you think the winner has a right to privacy and that we all have no need to know?
Answer: Yes. When they win millions of dollars, if their privacy is not kept, they can be targets for all kinds of mis-behavior.

Arent there any LOTTERY WINNER stories with happy endings?
I always hear about people winning the lottery and then ending up with nothing. Seems like something bad always happens to them. I know the media usually only covers "juicy" controversial stories but are there any recorded accounts where Lottery winners actually end up better than they did before winning the lottery? Im just curious.
Answer: Yes, there are many. But as you say, you won't hear about it in the media because, well, happy people don't make for exciting news stories. You can see a few of them on TLC's "Lottery Changed my Life" though.
Money doesn't buy happiness, we all know that - although we all think we'd be happier with more of it :-) In my opinion, winning a large sum of money doesn't change you, it makes you more of what you are because you now have bigger means. I think your relationship with money doesn't change with the amount you have.
For example, I know people who make $100,000 a year and can't make ends meet, because they live way above their means. If they won the lottery, they wouldn't magically turn into wise investors, they'd more likely just spend more money and keep living above their now higher means. They'd go from being in debt to being in debt...
I think that if you're already happy with your life and you are smart with your money, you'll get a happy ending! And trust me, there are plenty of those.

La Jolla, Calif. GOVERNMENTS typically use two tools to encourage citizens to engage in civic behavior like paying their taxes, driving safely or recycling their garbage: exhortation and fines.
