Help! I think my co-worker is a pedophile!?
I cant be too specific with names and places because I am afraid he will read this and find out. I am suspicious and afraid that my co-worked may be a pedophile, but do not have any proof of him doing anything, I only have "casual" stories he has told me.
My coworker is 23 and has never had a gf, never had a first kiss, never had sex with a girl from what he has told me. He has lived at home his whole life, even through college. He is very smart, and has been applying to medical school and has interviews coming up in November and December. But from what I have learned about him, I can tell you I dont like him.
One time at work he got to telling me a story (out of the blue) about his "friend" from Boston and how he was concerned because his friend ran away from home. I was curious because we live far away from the east coast, so I asked him how he met his friend. He told me that he spends a lot of time online and goes into chat rooms, and met this "friend" named Greg in a chat room when he was 20. He told me that at the time Greg was only 14. The story goes that he became friends with Greg and talked to him for hours at a time, even on the phone and this went on for about 1 1/2 years. He then told me he had planned a trip to visit Greg in Boston, but when I asked him if he had asked Gregs parents if this was ok he told me no. He told me he didnt even tell his own mom (who he lives with) what he was planning on doing. THIS WAS RED FLAG #1.
Then my coworker told me that Gregs parents had found all of Gregs conversations and emails with him, and that his dad was very mad and wanted Greg to cut all contact with him. When I asked why, my coworker shrugged it off and told me that Gregs parents are really strict, and they sent my coworker a threatening email telling him to stay away from Greg, and that they didnt like the comments he made about Gregs ass in the email transcripts they found. RED FLAG #2. When I heard this I asked my coworker to explain, but he told me he was just "playing around" with Greg and said in the email that he told Greg "Im going to kick your ass." and thats what Gregs parents got mad about. Immediately I thought this must be a lie, because what parents are that strict? It must have been something worse...
After this, my coworker told me that he has been secretly in contact with Greg this whole time. I told him he should never talk to Greg again, because this is not what his parents want and they threatened my coworker! Again, he shrugged it off. (At this time I asked my coworker if he was gay and he denied it). RED FLAG#3
In another conversation, (which again he brought up out of the blue) me and another coworker were talking about being gay, and how we feel that "gays cant help who they are and cant help being gay". My coworker joined in on the conversation and started talking about how pedophiles cant help who they are either, and how its not their fault. (needless to say we disagreed) RED FLAG #4
Now, a few days ago, my coworker told me that after his medical school interview in Boston, he is going to go visit a "friend" in Boston. AKA Greg!
What should I do? Who do I tell? I honestly do not want this person to become a doctor and have access to kids. There is no proof but these stories, and the sneaking suspicion I get every time Im around him.
Is this something I need to report? How do I deal with this?
In light of the Penn State child sex scandal involving Jerry Sandusky, and those who failed to report him like Joe Paterno, I just want to make sure that no more children have this happen to them and want to do everything in my power to protect people from monsters like this.

How important is funding to Penn State?
As you may have read in the news, Penn State is undergoing some pretty severe criticism over its handling of a sex scandal involving an assistant football coach, head football coach and several school officials: "The grand jury report on the alleged sexual abuse of children by former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky presented a scathing picture of an institution that looked the other way to protect its image." http://www.bradenton.com/2011/11/13/3647748/spanier-spins-two-different-ethical.html
And what is the main motive to "protect its image". Well, I dont have a source handy but the Penn State football team earns the college in the neighborhood of $50M in income each year. Im certainly not the only one who thinks thats plenty of motive.
This brings me back the Michael Mann and the inquiry last year into the Climategate emails and Manns professional conduct. I dont have facts (maybe somebody could help me out here) but I believe Michael Mann has some pretty hefty funding and hes really the face of climate science at Penn State (if not world wide as well). Manns funding alone is several million so I would suspect that if you added all grants and funding related to climate science at Penn State, youd get a pretty big number.
The recent sex scandal is likely going to deal a severe blow to the athletic and to a lesser extent the academic reputation of Penn State. It is easily argued that a negative outcome in the Mann inquiry would have clearly dealt a severe blow to the academic integrity of Penn State.
Interestingly, Graham Spanier was also key in the Mann inquiry: "I know theyve taken the time and spent hundreds of hours studying documents and interviewing people and looking at issues from all sides," Spanier said. http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2010/02/01/mann_inquiry_concludes_board_t.aspx
Graham Spanier was fired last week not because of any personal role in the Sandusky football scandal, but because of negligence on his part in ensuring that the allegations were properly investigated. That sure sounds familiar. Steve McIntyre has a good write up about all this: http://climateaudit.org/2011/11/10/penn-state-president-fired/
Nobody needs to make any conclusions here about anything since this is all just brainstorming. But is it really that inconceivable that Michael Mann was exonerated to protect climate science grants and other funding? If Graham Spanier has such a low standard of ethics and integrity to ignore victims of sexual assault, how easy would it have been for him to give Michael Mann a free pass?
@Maxx, thanks for the link. I took away this nugget:
“I know colleagues who run entire institutes only with climate. There’s no way for them to back down, otherwise the institute will be ruined.”
Its kind of difficult to believe that such an institute could conduct a fair and objective inquiry into itself. Thats the point of my question.
******************************************************
@david b: "Do you really think any university would defend a potentially losing case against intense criticism based solely on the fact that a scientists brings $270,000 to the University over the course of 5-6 years?"
I think its fair to say that any negative aspect shown Michael Manns conduct and research would harm Penn States academic reputation in general and would affect not only other climate grants like the $2M shown in the below link (one quick Google hit) but the entire schools grant program (at least for a few years).
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-02/ps-dgj022411.php
But it is completely fair for you to disagree and state that you believe the inquiry was balanced, fair, well conducted and thorough and looked at "all sides" as stated by Graham Spanier. As per my link to Climate Audit, Steve McIntyre makes a pretty good case for the opposite.
*****************************************
@Trevor: If you dont like my questions anymore then dont answer them. Its that easy.
However, since you did attempt to "answer" this one by completely going of on a perhaps intentional misdirection, its clear you either know very little about or you are being intellectually dishonest. For example: "...the Courts of Law have already acquitted him (Mann) of any wrong-doing." To be acquitted of something in a Court of Law, you need to be charged in Court of Law with something. Please tell us what Mann was charged with? They were in court in the first place because of UVas lawyers not because Mann was charged with anything. Mann wasnt even there.
Also: "Cuccinelli charged that Mann had misappropriated public funds." You should be careful here Trevor as that is simply a false accusation. Again, they were in court because UVa lawyers didnt like the CID requests. "Mike, accept that the Courts had access to all the evidence, all of
*Mann’s funding and his work going back many years and found nothing at all wrong with it." No, UVas lawyers were specifically trying to prevent this.
Actually, you did touch in a small way on the actual question by stating: "Mann has been the subject of several internal and external investigations,..." No, again you are completely wrong here. Mann has never been subject to an EXTERNAL investigation.
That right there is the whole point of this question. For internal investigations, things really seem to go well for Penn State when Penn State handles investigations and inquiries into staff of Penn State by other staff of Penn State. And again, my point is that there were a lot of calls for an external investigation into Mann regarding Climategate and I suspect there will be plenty with regard to this sex scandal.
Really Trevor, you shouldnt even bother answering my questions if you are going to embarrass yourself like that.
