Im writing this poem for my family Christmas, I wrote and read one for thanksgiving so now everyone thinks I should write and read one for Christmas too. So finally after approximately twelve hours of bashing my head into the wall, here is what I have. Can you please help me make sure it sounds good before I have to read it on Saturday. Twas the Night before (the first) Christmas Twas the night before christmas when all through the town not a square inch was empty not even the ground The doors on the inns were shut fast and tight and no one was offering a room for the night Mary and Joseph had no place to stay till an innkeeper offered his stable of hay Shepherds on the hill were watching their sheep when an angel came to them to speak "For unto you" the angels cried, "A saviour today is born In Bethlehem of David Jesus Christ the Lord And then the sky was filled with light as angels sang his birth that night Back at the stable, Jesus was born Surrounded by Animals, dirt, and hay And laid to rest in a feeding tray Heralded by angels, by shepherds greeted Surrounded by animals like the lowest treated But dont be fooled this baby was no peasant This was the Messiah The king of kings heaven sent He came to this earth to die on a tree To forgive the sins of the world He came for you and me So when you see the nativity Dont see just a stable of hay Donkeys and sheep, Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus in a manger laid Remember the reason that he came and see the shadow of the cross That fell over the manger To mark that first Christmas I like most of it the way it is, other than the slant rhyme in the last stanza. Answer: Twas the night before christmas... 'Twas the night before christmas, and he lived all alone; In a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney with presents to give, and to see what manner of person in this home did live. I looked all about, a strange sight did I see; no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by the mantle, just boots filled with sand, And on the wall hung many pictures of far distant lands. With medals and badges, and awards of all kinds, Suddenly a thought so sobering came into my mind. For this house was much different, it was so dark and dreary, I was in the house of an Airman, once I could see clearly. The Airman lay sleeping, silent, all alone; curled upon the floor in this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder, Not exactly how I imagined I'd find an airman soldier. Was this the hero of whom I'd just read? Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed? I then realized the families I saw on this night, owed their lives to these airmen who were willing to fight. For soon 'round the world the children would play, And grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day. They all enjoyed their freedom each month of the year, because of the airman, like the one lying here. I couldn't help wonder how many more lay alone, on a cold Christmas Eve, in some land far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye, and I dropped to my knees and started to cry. The Airman awakened and I heard a rough voice, "Santa, don't cry, this life is my choice; I fight for our freedom, I don't ask for more, My life is my God, my country, my Air Force." The Airman roiled over and drifted back to sleep, But I couldn't control it, I started to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still Until we both shivered hard from the cold night's chill. I didn't want to leave on that cold, dark night This Guardian of Honor so willing to fight. Then the Airman rolled over, and with a voice soft and pure, whispered, "Carry on, Santa, it's Christmas Day and all is secure." One look at my watch and I knew he was right Merry Christmas, my friend, and to all a Good Night! This was allegedly written by someone stationed on Okinawa and appears in various forms (soldier or Marine instead of airman).

Answer: The names of the original eight reindeer were actually taken from the 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas." Prior to the poem, American ideas about St. Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors varied considerably. The poem was first published anonymously in the Troy, New York Sentinel on December 23, 1823, and was reprinted frequently thereafter with no name attached. Authorship was later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore and the poem was included in an anthology of his works, but his connection with the verses has been questioned by some. Moore's wife is of Dutch descent, being a descendant of the Van Cortlandt family via her mother. She shares bloodlines with Henry Livingston Jr. and Clement Clarke Moore's family is married into the Livingston family as well. Henry Livingston, a New Yorker with Dutch and Scottish roots, is the chief candidate for authorship if Moore did not write it. Departing the depot my conductor and I, fighting fatigue on another red-eye. My conductor and I both dreading the hell of yet one more holiday at the hotel. Not ten miles out as we went through the night, a feeling upon us that somethings not right. We should have a clear... this signal was flashin... an approach came next as is usually the fashion. Then what to my sleep deprived eyes should appear, a dark signal and banner with officers near. We started to slow when I said with a sigh, "I really am tempted to just blow on by." But rather than take thirty days of vacation, we settled ourselves for this sad situation. Three "wise men" climbed on as we looked to see a Trainmaster a Supe Ops and an RFE. They said "tis the season for family and resting, we thought it was a really nice night for some testing. We wish a safe holiday for both of you but we found an exception, so heres a level two. We looked at your work sheet and its as we like, but you misspelled a word here so heres one more strike. You set nineteen pounds here instead of twenty, so here is one more... dont worry, theres plenty. We know its the eve of the birth of your Savior, but feel that we simply must change your behavior. Christ died on the cross as a way to atone us, but we are concerned for the size of our bonus. Wed like to say thanks guys for taking this run, oh, heres one more strike just in case we missed one." They made us sign papers and said nothing more, and one cut a fart as they went out the door. We sat there a moment, my conductor still sighing, I started to laugh, it was that or start crying. I said to myself, "this time of the season, we forgive all men for whatever the reason. Its just their job what these officers do, for deep down inside they are like me and you. This feeling of love is what Christmas is about." I opened my window and stuck my head out. I heard one exclaim as they left in the night, "Heres one more level for a burned out ditch light!"
Answer: Almost a decade of service now and almost a decade of spending every xmas and thanksgiving just like this. I figure I will take the bullet for those with little ones so when mine arrive very soon some poor soul will do the same for me. My favorite was last xmas eve. I got in actually at 2200 on a 8hr straight shot, unbelievable. But then it came... no car men, they have the holiday off, so you have to do the 15k inspection in 2ft of snow.. oh and yes we are watching to see if you check for piston travel.
