Answer: On March 16, 1914 the New York Navy Yard laid down the keel to begin construction of battleship number 39, which would later be named Arizona (Original speculation was that the ship would be named the North Carolina, the home state of Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels). The Pennsylvania class (consisting of the Arizona and the Pennsylvania) formed the next step of the US Navy's response to the naval arms race that had begun in 1906 when the Royal Navy completed the HMS Dreadnought. The ship was launched on June 19, 1915. Miss Esther Ross, of Prescott, christened the ship, along with the traditional champagne, with a bottle of the first water to pass over the spillway of Roosevelt Dam, which was completed in 1911 but which took until April 15, 1915 to fill. Construction continued on the floating hull and the ship was commissioned on October 17, 1916.
December 7, 1941
Japanese aircraft appeared in the air over Pearl Harbor just before 8:00 am on this Sunday morning. The color detail was on deck in anticipation of raising the flag at the stern at 8:00. The Arizona came under attack almost immediately, and at about 8:10 received a hit by a 800-kilogram bomb just forward of turret two on the starboard side. Within a few seconds the forward powder magazines exploded, gutting the forward part of the ship. The foremast and forward superstructure collapsed forward into the void created by the explosion and turrets one and two, deprived of support, dropped more than 20 feet relative to their normal position. The explosion ignited furious fires in the forward part of the ship.
The majority of the crew members were either killed by the explosion and fire or were trapped by the rapid sinking of the ship. Many of the survivors displayed remarkable courage in assisting their shipmates to safety. Lieutenant Commander Samuel G. Fuqua was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role in leading the rescue of other survivors. It was also awarded posthumously to Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd and Captain Franklin Van Valkenburgh. 1,177 of the crew died on the ship.
The construction began on 1960 and the memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1962. In 1980 a visitor's center on shore was opened and the Navy turned the operation of the memorial over to the National Park Service. During the 1980's,

Where can I find the value of a large shell from the USS ARIZONA that my father decorated?
This shell is about 30" tall 4" round that I believe was offered to sailors to decorate (flowers) on the Uss arizona. Done by my father in the mid 1930s while serving aboard the Arizona. Ive only seen one other in the Key West Naval museum but it was about 12" tall. Would like to know value for insurance purpose.
Answer: Here is a current Ebay auction for a WWI artillery shell.
http://cgi.ebay.com/1-WWI-US-military-artillery-shell-vase-brass-good-cond_W0QQitemZ110033637926QQihZ001QQcategoryZ584QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I have seen a good 20-25 auctions of various shells. Typical bids are anywhere from $50 to $300 (tops).
Surprisingly, there are many, many of these things out there. I would insure it for perhaps $300-$400, the Arizona story adds to the value (in my opinion).
What a great piece to have!

What type of jobs did sailors on the USS ARIZONA do during World War II?
Im writing a historical fiction short story about a sailor on the Uss arizona when it was bombed by Japan during the attack on Pearl Harbor. I was going to give him a certain job, but I want it to make sense.
Answer: Capital warships are small cities, so just about any job could be imagined. The main jobs of course would be manning the war-fighting equipment, which on a battleship would be the guns as well as the damage-control functions. Beyond that, sailors would perform everything from maintenance to giving haircuts and doing laundry.
Doing a story about one of the damage-control personnel probably would be a good way to present your subject. However, let me suggest an alternative for you: At the time of the attack, the Arizona was being used to store much of the gunpowder needed by the rest of the fleet, and a lot of the other ships were empty. That is why it blew up -- a bomb got into the gunpowder -- and because the explosion was cataclysmic, most who died were lost quickly, which does not give you much of a story.
There was another battleship in Pearl Harbor that day which actually was able to get up enough steam to sail off and, for a short time, fight back. This was the U.S.S. Nevada. It also was damaged by the attack, and its captain, fearing the ship would sink in the mouth of Pearl Harbor and block it, elected instead to back Nevada onto a beach, where it couldn't sink. Later, the Nevada was repaired and participated in several Pacific battles and also the Allied landings in France on D-Day. After the war, it was declared obsolete and used as a target for atomic bombs. They must have done a pretty good job putting her back together, because even though Nevada was hit by two atomic bombs, she refused to sink and eventually had to be scuttled with naval gunfire.
One of the men working damage control on the Nevada did such a good job during the Pearl Harbor attack that he eventually was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. If you wrote about him, your story would be history, not fiction. Look up Donald Kirby Ross. He was a warrant officer working as a machinist during the attack and helped keep the battleship from sinking. He later made captain, and the U.S.S. Ross (a destroyer) eventually was named for him. Along with his medal, he received a citation, which describes in detail exactly what he did. You could use that to help write your story, suggest up front that you made it all up, then reveal at the end that your story actually happened, and that Captain Ross (as warrant officer machinist) was a real sailor involved in the attack that day.

USS ARIZONA?
hi there
i recently visited the Uss arizona memorial and the USS MIssouri and loved it
one of the things i found most fascinating was the fact that oil is still leaking form the arizona, i was wondering if anyone knows the approx date people expect the oil to stop leaking from the ship
pearl harbour and hawaii were both fantastic places
thanks again
all answers much appreciated
Answer: Well, the oil leaking from her hull has been named the arizona's "tears" by some veterans.
There's no way to tell exactly how long it will take before the leaking stops. At present, she bleeds off about 1 to 2 quarts of oil a day... though her hull was pretty wrecked meaning that the oil inside could be mostly gone or still hundreds of thousands of gallons there. More or less, it's impossible to tell how much oil is still trapped inside her reckage without breaking her open and therefore releasing the rest in the process.
The age old myth, however, is that the day the last veteran of pearl harbor dies is the day the Arizona will stop crying for them.

How do they inter bodies at the USS ARIZONA?
I know this is kind of morbid but..... I went to Oahu last month and was very moved by the Arizona Memorial. The tour guides said that as survivors of Pearl Harbor die, many of those who survived the attack on the Arizona wish to be buried with their soldier brothers. Does the military scatter the ashes above the site? Do they inter the ashes or bodies inside the Arizona? Again, I know this sounds morbid. I teach high school history and shared the story with my students and they were wondering. Thanks for the help.
Answer: I couldn't find anything online. If you go to: http://www.nps.gov/usar/ there is an "e-mail us" link. Maybe you could find an answer that way. Sorry I wasn't more help. I'd assume they'd scatter the ashes, though. Anything more, like dropping a body in, would disturb the site.

Why was the USS ARIZONA not re-floated along with the other battleships?
The West Virginia, Nevada and California were refloated and later returned to action, while the Oklahoma was uprighted but never repaired. She was chosen for salvage operations, but why not the Arizona as well? Please dont take this question the wrong way as I didnt ask this to offend anyone.
Were there any plans to refloat the Arizona as well before becoming a memorial?
Answer: To costly to re-float her and more money to fix her. Many died on her and was effectively a tomb. The thought of re-floating her probably came up after the attack but most likely wasn't pursued hard to
change the status.

USS ARIZONA?
This may be werid...but Im just curious. In respect to the men who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor in the Uss arizona...I realize that the bodies would decompose, leaving bones. Do bones eventually decompose in water, too? Or are all those bones lying at the bottom of that watery grave?
Answer: This might help:
The speed with which decomposition occurs varies greatly. Factors such as temperature, humidity, and the season of death all determine how fast a fresh body will skeletonize or mummify. A basic guide for the effect of environment on decomposition is given as Casper's Law (or Ratio): when there is free access of air a body decomposes twice as fast than if immersed in water and eight times faster than if buried in earth.
The most important variable is a body's accessibility to insects, particularly flies. On the surface in tropical areas, invertebrates alone can easily reduce a fully fleshed corpse to clean bones in under two weeks. The skeleton itself is not permanent; acids in soils can reduce it to unrecognizable components; this is one reason given for the lack of human remains found in the wreckage of the Titanic, even in parts of the ship considered inaccessible to scavengers. Freshly skeletonized bone is often called "green" bone and has a characteristic greasy feel. Under certain conditions (normally cool, damp soil) bodies may undergo saponification and develop a waxy substance called adipocere, caused by the action of soil chemicals on the body's proteins and fats. The formation of adipocere slows decomposition by inhibiting the bacteria that cause putrefaction.
