Does anyone know why Robert E. Lee fought in the battle of Gettysburg and how he felt toward the battle?
Can someone please describe Robert e lees feelings and attitude toward the battle of Gettysburg, War in general, the civil war in particular and why he is personally fighting the war?
Answer: His loyalty rested with his state and not with the Union; he was the traditional kind of reserved kindly old gentleman and
commanded respect by his soldiers, but one of limited ability due to the fact that he had never held a high command;he was cut out as a staff officer possibly or even a deputy but not a
Commander in Chief; the decision to invade the north was the right one on principal, but long overdue(had he done it few months earlier,he would have J.Hooker or Burnside to deal with) and the advance into the north was a prime example of military incompetence;advancing into enemy territory with his units so widely separated with no cavalry for eyes and ears(only Stuart lost somewhere in his own cavalry world of the past...)?it is, mildly put a folly;it would inevitably result in a peace meal involvement which he had no hope to win and didn,t even have the will and the control over his subordinates to disengage on time and turn towards Washington thus forcing Meade, who was new to command to follow him, none could have thought that Lee would fight an enemy with superior numbers and equipment holding the high ground. No matter what urgency drove him,as a C.I.C. should safeguard
the southern army and fight a battle on a ground of his choice.
Compare his movement north with that of Napoleon 48 years earlier invading Belgium and marching towards Blucher and Wellington, when his entire line cavalry was screening the movement of his army(not Stuart with 1/4 of that cavalry, who should have been close to Lee,s left flank to avoid entanglements like Baufford's brigates)
Proper gentlemen like Lee usually lose wars(!)as for his feelings well in absence of a crystall ball I would say that in view of the seven days battles(peninsular operations)-there probablly necessary-and Antietam(unecessary) his disregard of his men's lifes shows his feelings about the destruction of
an entire division sent to march against superior enemy, fully entrenched and with superior fire power, because he was unable to think of anything more constructive:tosay the least it was wanton butchery and it wouldn't take a genious to have thought of that beforehand.

How did Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson viewed slavery during the Civil War?
I want to know how did these generals of the Civil War viewed slavery and African-Americans during that period because I read that Robert E. Lee owned, whipped, and released his slaves after the Civil War. * Also, Stonewall Jackson had slaves.
Source: *Reading the Man: General Lee (partial title) by Elizabeth Brown Pryor, 2007.
Answer: "There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil. Is it not strange that the descendants of those Pilgrim Fathers who crossed the Atlantic to preserve their own freedom have always proved the most intolerant of the spiritual liberty of others?"
-Robert E. Lee, 1855 (you can find the whole letter here:http://www.sonofthesouth.net/leefoundation/Lee%20on%20Slavery.htm)
As to Tom J. Jackson, he had a free slave as a cook follow him throughout the war named Jim Lewis. They were actually quite close. (He was a pallbearer when Jackson was killed. Jackson also had African-American soldiers under his command; to quoteDr. Lewis Steiner of the Federal Army had even witnessed over three thousand black soldiers marching with Jackson's corps through Frederick in 1862 writing,
"..These were clad in all kinds of uniforms, not only in cast-off or captured United States uniforms, but in coats with Southern buttons, State buttons, etc. These were shabby, but not shabbier or seedier than those worn by white men in the rebel ranks. Most of the blacks had arms, rifles, muskets, sabers, bowie-knives, dirks, etc.....and were manifestly an integral portion of the Southern Confederate Army."
Jackson and Lee were quite progressive in their day. And for the record being a Civil War author and historian myself I can tell you, anyone in the historical community knows Pryor spins tales and passes them off as history to shock readers. Put a little more bluntly Pryor is full of shit!

Why does America celebrate Martin Luther King day and not General ROBERT E LEE.?
One was a cultured morally upright, military genius, and gentleman who defended his kin with honor and dignity while the other was an agitator, adulterer, plagiarizer, and associated with communist subversion in the USA. Does this speak millions of where our culture is?

.
So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained.
What is a positive achievement of King in this country ?
Puddles the civil rights act is unconstitutional, and the democrat party of the south is not the same democrat party of today, you are being very shallow.
Answer: Because of Racism and Bigotry against Whites & the South.
****Little "Charley" skipped history in school. It was General Grant that was the Racist, Womanizer, and Drunk. But he was a Great General.
And as already stated: Stonewall Jackson was the Great Brilliant General on the South. He was better than Lee..... and Grant.

Does anyone know anything about a picture featuring Robert E. Lee on a horse?
My aunt has this old picture of Robert E. Lee, dating back to the early to mid 1900s or possibly even earlier. She wants to know how long ago its been since it was created. She has had it over 40 years or more. On the back it has a piece of information about the Atlantic Pacific Tea Company. It could be very valuable. If anyone has any information, please let me know.
Answer: It was a give-away done by the old A&P stores. The original photo would have been during the Civil War since Lee humbly withdrew from the public eye after the war to run Washington and Lee College.
A&P would have released the picture sometime in the 1930s to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Civil War. It's value is limited to Depression-era collectors and Civil War buffs.

Was ROBERT E LEE one of the greatest American generals ever?
He led the confederacy to many victories and fought for the US before the civil war, so how good of a leader was Robert e lee?
Answer: He was an amazing General. Just look at what he accomplished with a small army of mostly illiterate farm boys. Had his Generals managed to get the high ground at Gettysburg when they had the chance before he got there, likely there would be two nations where there is currently one.
Did you know that Arlington National Cemetery was actually started as a Union burial ground. It was placed on Robert e lee's home and his grounds as sort of an insult to him.
@ Uh Oh, you need to read your history more closely. General Lee actually abhorred slavery. He was drawn between supporting the country he loved, and fighting for what he knew was right, which was the right of the States to determine their own destinies. The Civil War, contrary to modern opinion, was NOT about slavery. In the South it was about maintaining their rights. In the North, it was about preserving the Union. When Virginia seceded and joined the Confederacy, that made Lee's mind up for him. He refused to fight on a side that would be contrary to his home state.
