What is a prenatal test for HUNTINGTONS DISEASE?
Yeah, I know, tons of questions about HD, but I cant find them anywhere but here.
Question is seen above and very much needed. Thanks for reading and answering!
Answer: Here's what I could find for you:
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on a thorough personal and family medical history, physical examination (including a neurological exam), and a series of laboratory tests. The physician will ask about recent changes in intellectual or emotional function, which may be early signs of Huntington's disease.
Genetic Testing
Genetic testing involves taking a blood sample for DNA analysis to determine whether the distinct mutation for Huntington's disease has occurred in gene IT-15. A sample of DNA also may be required from a closely related affected relative, ideally a parent. This helps confirm the diagnosis of HD and is important if the family's history is in any way unclear, uncertain, or unusual. Persons who test positive and are considering pregnancy are advised to seek genetic counseling before they conceive.
Presymptomatic testing can be performed on adults, children, and even fetuses in the womb. Genetic testing of a fetus holds special challenges and risks, and some testing facilities choose not to do it.
At-risk couples wanting to have children may choose to undergo in vitro fertilization with preimplantation screening. In this procedure, embryos produced from the couple's sperm and eggs are screened to identify one that is free of the HD mutation, which is then implanted in the woman's uterus.
Testing GuidelinesHuntingtons diseaseA positive test result can have profound, unanticipated impacts on patients and their families. Anyone contemplating genetic testing should obtain testing guidelines from the testing center or from an organization devoted to the interests of Huntington's disease patients and their families. Guidelines recommend that testing centers follow these practices:
* Counseling should be provided before and after the test, and before the results are known.
* Test results should be strictly confidential and should be disclosed only in person, and only to the individual being tested, regardless of the outcome.
* To protect the interests of minors, including confidentiality, testing should not be conducted for persons under 18 without a

HUNTINGTONS DISEASE?
Anyone have a relative with Huntingtons disease? Is it really that bad?
Answer: Huntington's is a heinous deterioration of the brain, and the worst part of it is that it usually does not make itself known until after childbearing years. It is passed through a dominant gene, so fully fifty percent of children of someone with Huntington's will come down with it.
The particular gene for it has been identified and family members have the option of testing for it while young to know if they will come down with it. What a dilemma that would be!

At what point has anyone experienced the time to place one with HUNTINGTONS DISEASE in a nursing home?
My son is 33. He has become almost non-communicable, is angered at not being able to talk, is incontinent, cannot explain his pains, grinds and breaks his teeth (one off completely)... As his sole caregiver 24-7, I am broken but do not want to hurt him emotionally by taking him away from home.
Answer: I can relate and sympathize with you I have cared for ppl with differnt types of disabilities and it is very frustrating on both parties not being able to understand wat he is saying or trying to say. As far as a nursing home i wouldn't I worked for a company that cared for ppl in a natural home setting were they had their own bedrooms. So I would check into seeing if there was anything like that in ur area. How things are payed for is SSI and other ways to pay for it I forget but I would check into that. The staff will cook meals for him bathe him if he is unable to do it himself he will have all the comforts of home in these houses. You can visit him any time u wish and it will make him happy to see you so I don't think he would be to hurt emotionally he will have a few housemates to keep him company as well. I honestly hope this helped u and goodluck.
Also if he takes any mediactions that would be taken care of as well they would take him to Dr. appts and on outtings in the comunity such as the mall or even a walk in the park to get out and enjoy himself.

Very serious issue: The biological father of the son suffered and died from HUNTINGTONS DISEASE.?
The son does not know he is adopted- Should he be told and perhaps be tested? He is 38 years old- and a father himself. As I understand this devastating disease- if a parent has it- the offspring has a 50/50 shot of inheriting it. This issue is extremely painful to consider, as lives would be affected, and mercifully for naught. Keep quiet- or address the possibilities?
Answer: If you have information about possible health issues I would think the most compassionate thing you can do is share what you know. He should know. Then he can make the decision if he wants genetic testing to determine if he has the disease or is a carrier.

If you had a good chance of having HUNTINGTONS DISEASE, would you get tested or not?
If you dont know what it is, look it up if youd like. There is a good chance I could develop it, but Im just wondering, is it worse to know or not to know? I hope someone understands what I mean. You have to probably know about the disease to understand.
Answer: Ugh. Huntington's...a degenerative movement disorder like Parkinson's. I don't have HD or know anyone who has it. I've read a little about it and other movement disorders, mostly because I have a movement disorder myself. Tourette syndrome. While not degenerative, life-threatening or particularly treatable, it has changed my life almost entirely. I'm looking into a type of brain surgery that is used expirementally to treat Tourette. (I'm extremely severe, disabled by it and no conventional treatment has worked)
I'm sorry that you may have it. I guess you know about HD, and what the prognosis is, especially.
For me... it would probably drive me crazy not knowing. But then knowing might not be much better. I guess in that situation, I'd want to know.
Hopefully, the treatments they are developing and improving for degenerative movement disorders will continue to become more effective and reliable.
Have you been to the Wemove.org site? They have support and discussion and information on all types of movement disorders, including HD. There you can talk to people who are affected by HD like you are.
God bless you.

HUNTINGTONS DISEASE.?
What is it?
Answer: Huntington's disease (HD) results from genetically programmed degeneration of brain cells, called neurons, in certain areas of the brain. This degeneration causes uncontrolled movements, loss of intellectual faculties, and emotional disturbance. HD is a familial disease, passed from parent to child through a mutation in the normal gene. Each child of an HD parent has a 50-50 chance of inheriting the HD gene. If a child does not inherit the HD gene, he or she will not develop the disease and cannot pass it to subsequent generations. A person who inherits the HD gene will sooner or later develop the disease. Whether one child inherits the gene has no bearing on whether others will or will not inherit the gene. Some early symptoms of HD are mood swings, depression, irritability or trouble driving, learning new things, remembering a fact, or making a decision. As the disease progresses, concentration on intellectual tasks becomes increasingly difficult and the patient may have difficulty feeding himself or herself and swallowing. The rate of disease progression and the age of onset vary from person to person. A genetic test, coupled with a complete medical history and neurological and laboratory tests, helps physicians diagnose HD. Presymptomic testing is available for individuals who are at risk for carrying the HD gene. In 1 to 3 percent of individuals with HD, no family history of HD can be found.

can a traumatic event trigger the onset of HUNTINGTONS DISEASE?
My daughter was hit by a car and then started showing symptons of Huntingtons disease. She has tested positive for huntingtons, but just wondering if a trauma would trigger the onset of symptons.
Answer: The age at onset is somewhat of a mystery and there doesn't seem to be a recognizable pattern in factors that affect onset. Studies on age at onset and possible triggering mechanisms show conflicting results.

Why has HUNTINGTONS DISEASE not yet been removed from the human population by natural selection?
It is both a dominant trait and fatal.
Answer: Many people who have Huntington's don't know about it until the disease starts showing its first symptoms, usually around the age of 40 when most patients have already had children and passed on the mutated gene.
