MUSIC REVIEW; NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC Performs Mahler and Thomas Adès - Review
When Mahler’s 80-minute Ninth Symphony is presented as the only work on an orchestra program, most people in the audience feel they have gotten their money’s worth. Especially if the performance of this turbulent and, by the end, sublimely moving symphony is as well played and resolute as the one Alan Gilbert conducted with the New York - By ANTHONY TOMMASINI

Ringing Finally Ended, but There’s No Button to Stop Shame
They were baying for blood in the usually polite precincts of Avery Fisher Hall. The unmistakably jarring sound of an iPhone marimba ring interrupted the soft and spiritual final measures of Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 at the New york philharmonic on Tuesday night. The conductor, Alan Gilbert , did something almost unheard-of in a concert hall: - By DANIEL J. WAKIN
Do you think the The NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC was wrong going to North Korea?
Or is the media controversy about this is overblown about nothing?
Answer: This was an excellent opportunity to reach out to people who are under a harsh dictatorship. At the end of the day, the people of North Korea enjoyed this. Believe me, they made the association between this positive experience and a more positive view of the United States.
So long as we keep North Korea isolated, we stand no chance to sway the general population. They need to see our good side. Otherwise, the only thing they know about us is what their dictator tells them, which is that we are the cause of their suffering.

Can I be in the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC if I play the Alto Saxophone?
I cant seem to find information on it and was just wondering if anyone here knew. Thanks! :)
Answer: Probably not if you only play the saxophone. There are very few pieces in the symphonic repertory that use a saxophone (L'Arlesienne by Bizet, Bolero by Ravel, a few others) and when playing those the orchestra will use a charinet player who also plays sax. For bigger works like the Glauznov Saxophone Concerto they might use a specialist.
If you want to play in an orchestra study clarinet along with saxophone.

My goal is to get into Juilliard, graduate, and play in the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC (see details)?
If I want to go to Julliard, then when i graduate play in the New York Phil Harmonic, what would be a good instrument to become very good at? I want to play classical. I currenlty play clairnet, bass clairnet and piano. I decided no piano since it is the most popular instrument therefore making it very hard to succeed in since everyone else is alot better. I was thinking bass clairnet or should I try a complete new instrument? Help please!
Answer: Either would be fine. Do realize, though, that Juilliard asks YOU to audition, not the other way. And you have to be the top in the nation to get in there. I doubt you'll be getting into the New York Phil right away. There has to be an opening to fill first, THEN they accept auditions. Otherwise the person who has the spot keeps it until they decide to leave.
I wouldn't suggest starting a new instrument. Just compete as much as possible, get yourself the best teacher in your state and study very hard. Hopefully you'll be accepted for an audition... then the rest will be history.

How would I get into the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC when Im older?
I have been playing the viola for almost five years, and Im thirteen years old. I hope to possibly make a career out of it someday, and it would be my dream to play in the New york philharmonic. I would like to know how much experience I should have, how I would be able to audition, and any other advice you would have. Thank you!
Answer: I would think that symphony people like what they call "prodigies." Technically, the term more-or-less means child genius but that term is more stereotypical than necessary, in my opinion. They think of any younger person learning a difficult instrument like the violin to be a prodigy. However, if you can arrange an audition with them, even if you don't plan on joining now, you can catch the attention of the conductor who might remember you for a later time. Sometimes, certain musicians started out just by auditioning for a symphony without getting anywhere with it until they were older and others were able to join at a young age.

Does the conductor of the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC REALLY care whats on your resume?
For instance, could you get into the New york philharmonic with no college degree for any conservatory (or even just a regular 4 year university), and almost nothing on your resume, if you have three times the talent as the other performers? What Im saying is, in the end, does the conductor look for just the best player and not necessarily the highest scholar?
Answer: Yes, definitely. Here's what happens:
An opening is announced. Usually they will ask for resumes from those who want to be considered. They will usually get somewhere around 300-400 applications from people wanting the job. They can't possibly hear all those people play; the auditions would go on forever. So, just like any other job, they weed through the resumes. If someone who looks completely unqualified (no music degree, no experience) sends in a resume, that goes right into the circular file.
The one exception would be a resume from an 18 year old with no degree who happened to be the winner of a major competition or one who already had a significant performing career. Even then the candidate would be expected to prove that they had very high-level ensemble skills and the same knowledge of theory that one would get from conservatory training. However, someone who is not a child prodigy already well-known in the music world realistically has no chance of being invited to audition.
In the end, the person who plays the best wins the audition, but they know perfectly well that experience is important. Anyone who has played in a high-level orchestra can tell you how vital experience is.
If you're in high school and really do have three times the talent of those likely to audition, you have the talent to win a major competition. If you don't want to go to college, get into the competition circuit. The competition is brutal, but if you're really that good it won't be a problem. If you were playing Paganini caprices technically perfectly when you were 13 you should do fine. If you're playing the same things that students applying for positions in conservatories are playing, you need to go to a conservatory and get the same education the competition is going to get, otherwise they'll be far beyond you in four years.

NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC at Kennedy Center Dress Attire?
Hello my husband and I are new to the area and have tickets to go see the New york philharmonic this weekend but are a little lost as to what we should wear.
Usually for symphonies back in Texas we dress in semi-formal attire but since this is an event is our first at the Kennedy Center and since the Philharmonic has a greater reputation than what were used to, do we need to scale up the dress a bit?
Answer: Hubby should wear a suit, tie and solid color shirt. You will feel best in a little black dress, heels and hose with a string of pearls and pearl studs. In Washington, you don't dress up too much for anything other than a strictly formal affair, but this event does warrant a little extra. That little black dress will get a lot of use.
Welcome, by the way. We're glad you're here!

Should I join the The Los Angeles Philharmonic or The NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC?
I am 16 and still deciding. so which one pays more and which one is better? thank you!
or what about Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra?
well EXCUSE ME for CARING about how much IM GETTING PAID, I have to SUPPORT MYSELF YOU KNOW!
Answer: It is good to have goals. Keep looking at the many great orchestras around the world.
Pay is determined by so many factors. It is impossible to answer your question. The concert master will make much more than last chair violin and maybe more than anyone else in the orchestra.
From the family of musicians that I come from, I have had relatives and friends in almost every major symphony in the world. The highest income most likely came from a Viola player who played with New York, and also played Pit in many of the Broadway musicals as well as free lance with area groups.
You may want to check out lesser known symphonies around the country, that give you time to pursue even more advanced dreams.

being hired by the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC Orchestra?
I play the cello, and I would like to play, when I grow up(Im only 14), in The New york philharmonic Orchestra. How good I have to be to get hired and what else do I need to get hired?
Thanks for all of your answers! (:
Answer: You have to be very, very, VERY good. The NY Phil is considered one of the world's best orchestras (and is one of the highest paying), so to get in, you will be competing with hundreds of the world's best cellists for a single spot (you can't even be considered for an audition without having an impressive resume and recommendations from top teachers.)
But don't give up- if you keep practicing, you just might make it!
