i need Bats around my house but how do i keep them from trying to attack me and my friends... i have alot of mosquitoes around my yard and i need the Bats to eat them and what are some websites to get plans to build bat houses??? ty
Answer: Bats are not going to attack you. The only reason they would do that is if you spooked them when they were sleeping. They only eat bugs, so they have no reason to attack you. Having them in your yard to eat mosquitos is a really good idea.
You could probably just google "how to build a bat house" and you should find plenty of good information on how to do that.

There is one I got in just a few seconds googling that. Try that and google the phrase to find more if you need it.

How do I remove BATS from the walls of my house?
For years we have struggled with Bats in our house. We have spent money for a professional pest control company to come in and the Bats where back the next year. The final straw now is the smell that is coming from our back bathroom, we think it is from the Bats. Please help us!
Answer: It will take you about 10 day to get rid of all the Bats in your house. you will need lots of silicone caulk some expandable foam, a roll of duct tape and some bird netting.
First step....... Find out where the Bats are coming and going from. Go outside at dusk and you will see where they are coming from.
Next........ During daylight hours seal all the holes in the boxing and facial of your home except where they are entering and exiting.
Next........ Where the Bats are entering and exiting you need to drape the bird netting over these holes. Attach it with staples or tape or both, it needs to be secure at the top and on the sides. Attach it so that it has a little play in the center almost so that you can just reach up into it from the bottom. Do not tape off the bottom of the bird netting.
Here is what will happen............... The Bats will come out at dusk and encounter the bird netting. They have to go out so they will flutter down the net then fly away. When they return to go back inside they will try to enter at the same spot they previously did. But the net is in the way, They cannot find the hole in the bottom of the netting to go back in. They will try all night to get back in until dawn. It will take several days to get them all out because they don't all come out every night. Leave the net up for 10 days, but inspect it daily to insure that it is secure. After the 10th day IN THE DAYTIME take the net down and seal the hole.
Unfortunately you will have to live with the smell untill it dries out. It will go away through the heat of the summer but almost impossible to remove. All i can tell you to do about the smell is to use lots of air fresheners.
It cost me 1200 bucks to see this happen on one of my rental houses. I have since succesfully evicted at least 30 bat infested homes. SO SIMPLE A CAVEMAN COULD DO IT!!!!!

How do I get rid of fruit BATS or baby BATS in my chimney here in Oregon?
I live in Southern Oregon and I have a nest of fruit Bats or Bats in my chimney. How do I get rid of them and how do I do it without harming them? Their screeching noise is untolerable.
Answer: Wait until they leave at night to hunt insects and block the hole. You may have babies there as well, so you will undoubtedly kill them by doing that. Make some bat houses and hang them up in trees or another part of the house first. Bats are very benificial and killing them really is a poor solution.

How do you tell the difference between BATS and Birds?
During the evenings around where we live we get flying animals around our house that resemble birds but we think they might be Bats. They flutter about and make a kind of chirping sound that could come from a bird but could also come from a bat. Could someone explain to me how you can tell the difference between the two when youre looking at them from a distance?(If possible) Itd be much appreciated. Thanks!
Answer: There are few birds active at night and most go to roost shortly after sunset. You do describe bat flying and communicating. The bat can make what looks like very sharp, right angel turns, birds cant do this. Sometimes bat flying looks choppy, stop and go. Bats often hunt over ponds. Bats hunt the edges of woods, taking advantage of the updrafts the breeze make when entering trees.

How to stop BATS from hanging out on my front porch?
The local Bats have found a new "hotspot" for their evening meeting place - my front porch! I am sick of sweeping bat poop off the porch every morning (granted, its much better than when they were in the attic and sometimes got in the house!!). I had read that strips of aluminum foil hung from the porch ceiling would confuse their radar and would make them find a new place to hang out. Has anyone successfully tried this or do you have other successful bat "removal" techniques? Thanks!
Yes, thank you - sonar. My mistake.
Answer: If it's a closed in porch inspect all your screens, walls and ceiling for any holes or spaces. They can squeeze thru holes as small as a half inch. Seal as many as you can after the Bats leave for the night. If it's an open porch you could get a couple of fake owls with rotating heads from Walmart for about $15 each. Put them on platforms fairly high up in an obvious place where the Bats can see them (Bats are NOT blind). Owls are a major bat predator and no bat wants to share its roosting area with an owl. I've also heard that the strips of aluminum foil and hanging old cd's from string works. Good luck.

What are the different types of metal baseball BATS and what makes that bat different from another?
I know there are composite Bats and Bats with a "V Handle" or something like that, but I dont understand the differences. How can I tell the differences by just looking at it? Are there other types of metal Bats?
Answer: Well, yes there are different kinds of metal Bats. Composite Bats are one of them, but another type of bat is alloy Bats. These include the older stealth cnt. You can tell the differences not so much by the look, you can if you know the bat, but you really either have to do research on it, or hit with it. Then, there are Bats that are a combination of both alloy and composite. All three of the Bats have distinctive sounds. For example, alloy Bats have a "ping" of them. The composite and composite alloy mix Bats have a lot quieter kind of almost wood bat sound. I have a drop 5 stealth imx and a drop 9 stealth imx. Orange and blue colors, both 2009. Both of these Bats are composite alloy Bats. You know this by the "imx" decal that is on the bat. this is only in stealths obviously. Both of these Bats are pretty dang amazing, with great pop, loads of power and a sweet spot that literally cover from handle to tip. So i hope this has helped, and p.s. i prefer composite alloy Bats, if you cant tell.

What is the difference between composite BATS and aluminum BATS?
I need to know what composite Bats do and how (or if) they are better than aluminum Bats.
Answer: A word about Composite Baseball Bats
Composite Baseball Bats, such as the Easton Stealth Composite and Louisville Catalyst, are fairly new to the Baseball scene. They have been used in softball for many years. Early on, there seems to be some mixed reviews on the Composite baseball Bats. I believe this is because the baseball world is not fully educated on these Bats, and don't realize how to make a composite bat work for them.
To start off with, composite Bats have a much longer break-in period than aluminum Bats, and hitting jugz balls will not do it. If you plan on breaking in these Bats in the cages, you need to use real baseballs. Another common complaint in some reviews is the poor durability of these Bats. But, what players and coaches must realize is that they are not just swinging a hunk of metal anymore. Composite Bats should not be used in cold weather; temperatures less than 70 degrees they can easily break, as many are finding out. Another common complaint is the cost. Yes, they are expensive, but if broken in correctly and used correctly, you will get so much more out of your bat than the aluminum or hybrids of past years.
There are several Pros and Cons (and misconceptions) about composite Bats, but players and coaches need to have the correct information before making a judgment. After I explained the proper break-in and use of composites to a few of our high school players, they were amazed at the difference. At first, the ball will sound like it came off a wooden bat, which was another complaint in many reviews, but with proper effort and care you can break them in to the point where it sounds more like a rifle than wood. Players, coaches and parents need to know what they are buying. Without proper knowledge, they are just buying a $300 or $400 Bat, but with the correct knowledge they could be buying $300 Lightning Rod. Composite Bats give a whole lot more forgiveness for the imperfect swing, and have the potential to make the average hitter a clean-up hitter.

What is the smallest insect a bat can detect if a BATS frequency chirp is 91.7 kHz?
A bat can detect small objects such as an insect whose size is approximately equal to one wavelength of the sound the bat makes. Assume Bats emit a chirp at a frequency of 91.7 kHz, and that the speed of sound in air is 413 m/s.
What is the smallest insect a bat can detect, in units of mm.
Answer: Run for your life, the light emitting Bats are coming!!
DON'T USE THE SPEED OF LIGHT.
Bats use sound waves. Covert to wavelength using 413 m/sec as the speed of sound. So wavelength = 413m/s / 91700 * 1000 mm/m for the answer in mm (about 4-5 mm)
I do agree that one wavelength is probably about right for the detection limit.
:)
-Fred
EDIT: The brain power kid below me has the units all screwed up, so don't follow that advice!
Remo (1st grade) is right that radio wave antennas are 1/2 wavelength, but not because of resolution issues. It is a resonance/receiving "thing". I have no great argument with him vis-a-vis the 1/2 (or less) wavelength resolution in THEORY , but it very much depends upon the bat's signal to noise ratio processing limitations, and I would guess that noise is the "real" limit along with "bat bandwidth".
I don't know why Albus says that. I guess (s)he has not studied physical optics (or optics) and (s)he has certainly not studied diffraction. The resolution is a function of wavelength. Sorry, Al, that's just incorrect.

How do you get BATS to move into a new bat house?
I built a bat house four years ago exactly per spec but I still dont have any Bats living in it. Is there some way to "advertise" for tennants?
Answer: Attracting Bats - http://www.batcon.org/bhra/attracting.html
Bats have to find new roosts on their own. At this time, there are no proven lures or attractants (including bat guano) that can be inserted in or applied to a bat house. Bats will investigate new roosting opportunities while foraging at night. They are quite good at detecting crevices, cracks, nooks, and crannies that offer shelter against the elements and predators. Bat houses installed on buildings or poles are easier for Bats to locate, have greater occupancy rates, and are occupied 2.5 times faster than those mounted on trees.
Unlike domestic animals, Bats are wild and free-ranging, and it is typically illegal to buy or sell them. Permits to capture and possess Bats are normally limited to researchers, zoos, wildlife rehabilitators and certain educational organizations. Catching and relocating Bats to new areas is, in any case, highly unlikely to succeed. Bats have good homing instincts, and once released into a bat house, will attempt to return to their former home area. Placing Bats in a bat house is therefore not recommended. If a bat house remains unoccupied after two full years, we recommend repositioning the house or making appropriate modifications.
Maintaining proper roost temperatures is probably the single most important factor for bat house success. Temperatures inside a bat house should be warm and as stable as possible (ideally 80º F to 100º F in summer) for mother Bats to raise their young. Some species, like the big brown bat, prefer temperatures below 95º F, while others, like the little brown bat, can tolerate temperatures in excess of 100º F. Bachelor Bats are less picky, and may use houses with cooler temperatures. Wooden or masonry structures are the best mounting sites, especially in colder climates, as temperatures are more stable than for houses attached to poles or trees.
Bat house temperatures are influenced directly by the exterior color (dark vs. medium vs. light paints/stains), compass orientation (east-, southeast-, or south-facing are generally good bets for single houses in most climates), the amount of sun exposure, how well the house is caulked and vented, and also the mounting substrate and construction materials used. You may have to experiment to get the right placement and temperature range. You can always use a thermometer taped to a pole (check the chambers high and low, and front and back), to see if temperatures are suitable inside the bat house. Where possible, installing multiple houses is advised to provide a wide range of options from which Bats can choose. Bats may move from one house to another throughout the year to find more favorable microclimates or to deter predators.
Pick installation sites with great care to avoid having to move a bat house once it becomes occupied. Most bat houses have open bottoms; therefore guano will not accumulate inside. Guano will end up on the ground underneath, however. Avoid placing bat houses directly above windows, doors, decks, or walkways. Bat urine may stain some finishes. Two- or four-inch spacers between a bat house and wall, a large backboard, or a longer landing area below a bat house may reduce excrement collecting on a wall. A potted plant, or a shallow tray or plant saucer, can be placed underneath a bat house to collect bat guano for use as fertilizer in flower beds or gardens. Do not use a bucket or deep container to catch droppings (unless ¼-inch or smaller mesh covers the entire top of the container), as any baby Bats that fall will become trapped inside. Some bat species are able to retrieve their pups from the ground.
Once you have attracted Bats, as a “bat house landlord” it is your responsibility to maintain the houses in good condition to keep Bats coming back year after year. Wasp and mud dauber nests should be cleaned out each winter after Bats and wasps have departed. New caulk and paint/stain may be required after three to five years to guard against leaks and drafts. Bat houses should be monitored at least once a month (preferably more often) to detect potential problems such as predators, overheating, wood deterioration, etc. Any repairs or cleaning should be performed when Bats are not present.

What is the difference between baseball BATS?
What is the difference between aluminum Bats, and composite Bats? Whenever i read about it, italways says composite Bats take longerto break in. What else?
Answer: Composite Bats, through the years, have been shown to actually gain "pop" with use and break down, resulting in significant increase in the "trampoline effect," where the bat actually gives and rebounds, resulting in dangerous speeds off the bat. The old standard BESR (Ball Exit Speed Ratio) Bats have thus been shown to be nearly useless in determining safety standards. Some coaches and players have even found ways to age these Bats by rolling them on a hard surface to increase the "pop" off the bat. New BBCOR Bats have been created to eliminate this increase in "pop" and make the game safer. The intent, of course, is to create a bat which reacts more like wood. Wood has long been known as the perfect media for baseball Bats, but with the advent of aluminum, leagues and schools saw this as a way to combat rising costs of replacing broken wooden Bats. Growing technology gave way to newer and better materials, to a point at which technology allowed the Bats to become unsafe. Now, one would ask, why not just return to wooden Bats? Since the introduction and growth of aluminum Bats, the cost of wooden Bats has increased ten-fold. A good wooden bat now costs over $100, and with potential breakage, most leagues and/or schools can't afford this. So, enter BBCOR (Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution) to create an aluminum or composite (yes, most BBCOR Bats are composite) bat which reacts more like wood and makes the game much safer to play.
