When the NORTHERN LIGHTS happen, is there any other energy produced besides light?
When the Northern lights happen, is there any other energy produced besides light?
Answer: There's a very, very small quantity of frictional heat created as the charged particles ride the magnetic field lines into the atmosphere and the electrons collide with atmospheric gases. But we're talking *really* small here. Like, you'd have to fly up and stick a very sensitive thermometer inside to notice.
Just to be clear, because I'm not sure what the other person was saying, magnetism is a force, it is not energy.

can anyone please explain how they work with a diagram or a link to one.
Thank you.
Answer: I can explain. See, when the exosphere has an aurora borealis, it has different particles together and they create vibrant colors and effects. Plus, it also comes with a crackling sound that you can hear quite well. It lasts about two to three hours or so.

Where in Canada is it best to experience NORTHERN LIGHTS?
Hello, I am from New York and recently discovered a keen fascination for aurora borealis (Northern lights). I also learned the best time to experience them was between september-october, march-april so I was planning a trip for this september to northern Canada. My question is how far north into Canada do I have to drive in order to be able to experience the Northern lights?
Answer: the further north the better colours and sounds become. You can sometimes see them as far south as just north of Montreal/Tororonto if its a cold clear evening and they are out in force but you only see it as a faint white glow on the horizon and dont hear the snaps and pops on a strong nite.
The furthest point north in Canada thats easily accessible by public transport would be Fort McMurray in Alberta. You can fly in to Edmonton and then take a regular commuter airline like westjet http://www.westjet.com to fly from Edmonton to Fort McMurray. Here is a link to the towns tourism site and yes they even have northern light packages!
http://www.fortmcmurraytourism.com/index.php?page_id=1003 (in fact their hospital there is called "Northern lights regional health" as happen to work in that field. /
Fort McMurray is also home of the oil sands deposits and that process of digging out oil with huge cranes and huge trucks is worth a look see too and open to public tours.
Edmonton is home of the worlds largest mall with a huge indoor water park, hockey rink, submarine pools and like 500 stores so its worth a day on the journey too if you ever do.

I would like to know what countries or what part of the world see what lights.
Southern lights / Southern aurora and Northern lights / aurora borealis
Thank you.
Answer: Most of the logical places have been listed in both hemispheres. The Northern lights have been reported visible as far south as Cuba. I would imagine that the location of places where the Northern/Southern Lights are visible depends upon the amount of charged particles ejected by the Sun and captured by our magnetosphere.

In a little brick-walled taverna in Athens, over a lunch of Cretan salad and stuffed grape leaves, a Greek journalist named Aris Hadjigeorgiou was holding forth one day in late November about the calamitous state of his city and country as only a veteran metropolitan reporter could. He explicated the insidious ways in which the upper echelons of - Life in Greece seems to be rumbling on, with its citizens seemingly in a collective trance, despite the fact that the country has sat at the epicenter of an economic crisis that is threatening the foundations of Europe; most surprising is that there seems to be a pervasive sense of relief over the crisis that is upon Greeks, as if a long, strange dream is at last over. How do southern lights, NORTHERN LIGHTS, southern aurora aand aurora borealis work in the sky?
How do southern lights, Northern lights, southern aurora aand aurora borealis work? What is it that makes them look so amazing?
Answer: There are only two. the Northern lights are the Aurora Borealis, the southern lights are the Aurora Austral is. WHen charged high energy particles- mostly from the sun- hit the earths magnetosphere , the follow the fields lines toward the poles A lot of energy is dissipated as the follow the lines towards the ground and lose their high energy.
Photos of the lights taken from space show them clearly as curtains of light well confined to the magnetic poles.

Were the NORTHERN LIGHTS visible a few nights before last years big snow storm in Ireland?
Here in the USA In New England ( north eastern US) We had a freak October snow storm that has caused a lot of damage. The Northern lights were visible Very far south a few nights before. Same with the Japan earth quake, the lights were seen before it happened. I am curious if there is a connection between the Northern lights and the crazy weather and the natural disasters that have been happening globally.
Answer: This year, the northern light has been seen in several places, on the solar spot cycle of 11 years, peaking next year. But it wasn't last year. At least, it wasn't here in Norway where the international northern light center is, in Tromsø, up north. So, I don't think it was visible in Ireland.
The fact that it was seen in October (in both Canada and Norway) has nothing to do with the recent snowfall in New England. It is just a coincidence and I don't think it has been any northern light just before the Japanese earthquake / tsunami.
Earthquakes are geology, the northern light is astrophysics and none of them has anything to do with meteorology. The latter is the study of the thermodynamic effects of air masses with different temperature, moisture and pressure in the layer from sea level to the stratosphere, about 12 km above the poles, to 18 km over the equator.
Above that, there is the stratosphere, then the mesosphere, to finally arrive to the ionosphere that starts at 85 km above sea level and where the northern light a.k.a. aurora borialis, occurs.
If you want to know why it snowed in New England while northern Europe suffered a much warmer than usual autumn, read about Rossby waves and the polar front. To have those differences is normal.

Best place to see the NORTHERN LIGHTS in Alaska?
I live in Forida and have been planning to take a trip to Alaska either in the summer or winter of next year basically just to see the scenery, wild life, and I like cold weather. I want to possibly see the Northern lights. I heard you can see them better at certain times of year. I also heard you see them better at certain locations. Can anyone tell me some good places to visit to see them and at what time I should go (like certain months) ?
Answer: Denali, at 63 degrees north, is also a good spot to view the Northern lights. Other Alaska places are far enough north for good for viewing, but are hard to get to and offer fewer accommodations. The next-best options are Nome (64 degrees) and Anchorage (61 degrees). However, the Northern lights can sometimes be seen as far south as Juneau or Sitka.
When to See the Northern lights in Alaska
By the time you get far enough north to see the Northern lights more reliably, you've entered the area of perpetual twilight from late April through September. Seasonal cloudiness is also worst in August.
What's the best time to see the Northern lights? September 22 or March 22, on a new moon night, very late at night or early in the morning, a "perfect storm" that may not occur very often nor match your travel plans. These characteristics may help you decide when to make your trip to see the Northern lights. They are:
•Most frequent around the spring and fall equinoxes (September 22 and March 22)
•Most active late at night or early in the morning
•Most intense from December to March when nights are longer, the sky clearer and darker. This is also the coldest part of the year, reaching as low as -40 F.
•Brighter during the new moon.

NORTHERN LIGHTS?
i have only seen them a few times but every time i saw them they were a flurry of colors or just a white strip....in photographs though, the majority of them are green. is this just the camera that makes it green or are most sightings of the Northern lights green? and does someone have any idea as to how i can draw Northern lights? thank you
Answer: The images that you took may be partially green due to white balance but the Northern lights can be any number of colours. It's entirely possible that the more sensitive CCD could see the hue while your eyes couldn't. In some of the more northerly portions of Canada I have seen the lights in green, blue, red, yellow, purple and white... sometimes several colours at once. When they streak across the sky it is a dramatic and intense sight. These "wisps" of light can cover several thousand miles in a second and extend to the very edges of the earth's magnetic influences.
To draw them, keep in mind that they are often referred to as "curtains" of light. Think of them as the undulations in a draped fabric. Use coloured pencils/pens/brushes etc. and create short vertical strokes along a wavy path.
Hope this helps.

NORTHERN LIGHTS?
I would really like to go away for a long weekend to see the Northern lights. Anybody know when and where is best to go?
Answer: Best time to go is November/December.
Some airlines do night flights purely to see the Northern lights - i.e. you take off from Gatwick at 9pm, a guide then explains everything and turns the lights off completely in order to show you the best views, then you land at 3am.
They fly you up north past Scotland and the views are amazing as there is no light pollution and you are higher up (obviously!).
Not quite a weekend away but the views you see in this short space of time are much more spectacular than a weekend away which would probably involve flights anyway.
