How is a PLATYPUS an endotherm if it lays eggs?
I know a Platypus regulates its internal temperature, making it an endotherm, but if it lays eggs dont they have to be kept warm meaning the babies are born ectotherms?
Answer: Birds are endothermic and lay eggs. The parent's body heat speads up the development of the embryo, but the young are still born endotherms.
We tend to associate egg-laying with the ectothermic reptiles, but there is no reason why mammals should not lay eggs - the two processes are not linked in any way.

What is the extreme environment that the PLATYPUS lives in?
Ok so i have a paper due wednesday on the Platypus and I cant find any info on the extreme environment of the Platypus. I have been searching the internet for hours and cant find anything. So could you like give me a web address or something that would be great. :~)
Answer: Duck-Billed Platypuses are found in the lakes, streams and rivers of eastern mainland Australia and Tasmania.
They build their burrows in banks, with the entrance being approximately 30 cms (12 inches) above the surface of the water.
Duck-Billed Platypuses have territories of up to 7 kms (4.4 miles) and the territory of a male will overlap with the territories of 3 - 4 females.
They share their habitat with a number of predators such as snakes, water rats, monitor lizards, hawks, owls, goannas, foxes, eagles and possibly crocodiles. That is an environment I would not like to inhabit !!

Animal similar to PLATYPUS in different georgraphic location?
For an assignment on the evolution of the Platypus I need to compare its evolution to the evolution of a somewhat similar animal in another part of the world (as the wolf is to the dingo). Reasons and sources for answers are best, thanks.
If there are really no other animals even close (besides echidnas) then any other animals pairs from different georgraphic locations and interesting evolutionary characteristics would be very helpful.
Answer: There really aren't any. Platypus are monotremes, mammals that lay eggs. There are only two living species within that order, the Platypus and echidna -- both of which are native to Australia, though different parts of the continents.
Unlike various canines, the monotremes are very unique... and like I said, there are only two species.

what is the evolutionary purpose of a PLATYPUS?
why did Platypus evolve the way they did, i.e. a duckbill and laying eggs instead of live young. what brought about this evolutionary change?
no shit they contribute to the balance of enviroment. read details and you would understand my question.
Answer: As stated above, the egg laying is not an evolutionary change, it is an evolutionary left-over, an ancestral condition inherited from reptilian ancestors.
One of the reasons that this egg laying mammal was able to survive in Australia while the Monotremes went extinct pretty much every where else, was that Australia was inhabited mostly by marsupials instead of placental mammals.
Marsupials, carrying their young in pouches, aren't particularily well adapted for an aquatic lifestyle - the young have a tendency to drown when mommy goes underwater looking for food. Because there was little competition for the ecological niche of an aquatic forager. The Platypus was able to survive here, despite a 'primitive' reproductive system solely because of the equipment the local competition had.
As for the duckbill, the Platypus bill only superficially resembles a duck's bill. Both ducks and Platypus get their food by sifting through mud and muck at the bottom of ponds and creeks for tasty yummies. The broad, flat bill is a shape that works well for this purpose, allowing the animals to push the bill into the muck and contact a broad surface area of the medium to both find and grab those yummies. However, a Platypus' bill is not hard and horny like a duck's, it is soft and leathery - almost more like a dog's nose. It is also studded with sensory nerves that can not only feel a worm squirming in the mud, but can actually pick up the electrical signals created by the worm's muscles firing - allowing the Platypus to detect the worm from a short distance, not just by touch.
The evolutionary purpose of any creature is to pass on their genes to the next generation of creatures. The Platypus is able to successfully do this through the suite of ancestral and derived characters it has evolved through natural selection in its native habitat. Egg laying allows it to utilize a niche that the marsupials common to its region cannot, and the duck-like bill allows it to find and capture food at the bottom of lakes and streams.

How does evolution explain the PLATYPUS?
OK I understand much of the evolution theory. How can it explain our bizarre and cute friend the Platypus?
In an odd world this guy is an odd one out. How did this happen? Were are the missing links?
Answer: There are two theories to explain how the Platypus has evolved into what it is today. The first (theory B) shows that relatives of monotremes formed their own evolutionary branch that was completely different from development of both marsupials and placentals. This change is thought to have occurred 135 million years go, the beginning of the Cretaceous period. The marsupials and the placentals divided at some point 135-65 million years ago.
The Second (theory A) was proposed by Gregory (1947) and was not popular until the 1970s. He said that between 135-65 million years ago, the placentals and marsupials separated to their own way then later the monotremes and the marsupials went their own way.
Evidence for this theory is that the reproductive systems of monotremes and marsupials are extremely similar. The embryos of both have some stage of encased shells in the gestation period. The only difference is that monotremes have the encased shells throughout the entire gestation period, whereas marsupials only have the encased shells for about two thirds of the gestation period.
Are you denying that evolution exists at all?

Do the mysteries of the PLATYPUS, continue to baffle and confuse evolutionary scientists?
Especially diconcerting to scientists are the unusual 10 sex chromosomes, unlike any other creature! Since the Platypus lacks the mammalian sex-determining gene SRY, the mechanism of sex determination remains unknown to even the smartest scientists in the world!
Is it too early to jump on the evolution bandwagon which is still a theory and untested by the scientific method? No labs are running evolution studies on animals that are published.
Answer: Scientists know that before this decade is out, we will have made contact with a more advanced civilization from another planet, who will know more than we do. We're going to learn a lot, hopefully about cancer also.

How would a PLATYPUS respond to people?
How would a Platypus respond to the presence of humans?
Answer: Do you mean in a literally sense? As if a person were to walk up to a Platypus?
Or do you mean in a ecology sense, such as people moving into a Platypus's habitat and changing the environment?
In the literal sense, a Platypus, because it's a wild animal, would try to escape the human because it sees the human as a dangerous, unknown predator. If you were to grab one, you may even get spurred (Platypuses have a poisonous gland on their hindfeet called a spur).
If you're asking this question from the other angle, then it depends on what type of presence that humans create. Would we slowly destroy their habitat? Probably. This would decrease Platypus populations. Would we increase fishing and other recreational sports in their home ranges and territory? Most likely. This would also decrease the Platypus population. Would the humans hunt them? Would we accidentally pollute the water system that the playtpuses live in?

What should I use to express difference, PLATYPUS or alien?
Im doing a collage of myself. In the center I want something that expresses my uniqueness, but what? You have no idea how different I am from everyone else, I know that everyone is unique, but I feel uncommon, extremely one of a kind. I need something that expresses that. What symbol would represent that? I am thinking an alien or a Platypus, they are so different. I think Im going with the Platypus, what do you think?
any other suggestions are welcome indeed!
Answer: Is that really how you feel about yourself, or how others see you, or both? Can you make this distinction in your collage? A Platypus represents a rare animal. An alien represents something not of this world. Then there is the fish out of water, or a person before their time. There are lots of ways to say that we feel different from others. Do you feel alienated and alone? That would be the alien. Do you feel special and rare? That is the Platypus. What about other sides of you? Is there a side that desires friends, or time alone, or loves music, or loves to be silly? You say you are unique, and that is very true..now, tell us what makes you unique. Do you see yourself different than others see you? Do you like what others see in you? Do you like what you see in yourself? What part of you is restless...what part will never change...where is that child in you saying, and what does she look like? What is the young woman you will be saying right now, if anything?
