What is the effect of a magnetic earth and the suns SOLAR FLARES?
Every other planet, comet, moon, asteroid etc appears to be visited by Solar flares and solar wind. The Earth (so far ) seems to be rather mildly effected.Solar winds on Mars cause 300 mph winds. Is this due to the magnetic properties of the planet Earth? This solar wind has been noted on even new planets Xena and Sida(. names escape me at this point.) but as far away as they are they feel the solar tide. These new planets are even more distance than Pluto. However all other planets Mercury,Venus,Mars,Jupiter etc seem to be ravage by these solar winds. How are we protected? Do the magnetic forces of a rotating Earth deflect these winds somehow? Apparently. How lucky for us.
Answer: The earth IS protected from Solar flares. Unlike most other planets we have analyzed, the earth has an EMF field around it. Its like a magnet. Magnets have a North (positive) pole and a South (Negative) Pole. Electro-Motive Force (EMF) is a flow of electrons from the negative pole to the positive pole. This flow of electrons acts like a shield and deflects Solar flares from reaching the earth. Now, its not absolute! There are actually some Solar flares that do indeed reach us, but I think this is a bit much for this forum. I hope this helps!

Do you believe that SOLAR FLARES are gunna destory the earth crust in anytime at all?
I mean like will the Solar flares ever happen to actualy destory the earth crust. Not in 2012 just about 1000 years in time?
Answer: There are many Solar flares every year. They add to the flow of charged particles called the solar wind that streams past Earth. That can sometimes cause problems with communications and increase auroral activity. It has absolutely no effect at all on solid rock, which is what the Earth's crust is made of.
In several billion years the sun will expand into a red giant and engulf the Earth. At that point the crust will melt and vapourise into the sun's atmosphere.
That's unless humans are still around then in which case we may have the technology to move Earth out of the way.

What would happen if Earth experienced massive SOLAR FLARES?
What would happen world wide to our electricity?
what would happen to out plant life?
would any part of the Earth experience forest fires as a direct result of the Solar flares?
How would society survive [if we could]?
would we know if the Solar flares are approaching, or would the flares be the same speed as light (therefore reaching Earth within seconds)?
oh well. I was hoping to write an apocalyptic story for it, but i guess Solar flares are too boring.
Answer: In fact the Earth has experienced massive Solar flares, though not recently. In 1859 the largest recorded solar flare hit Earth, disrupting telegraph communications for weeks. A large enough solar flare could also cause large blackouts all over the world. Such a long disruption in global communications and power would, given our reliance on computer systems, certainly have a detrimental impact on our society. Total anarchy? Unlikely.
Thanks to our wonderful atmosphere we would be shielded from any direct impacts (radiation, intense heat, etc) from Solar flares so don't worry about being cooked in your bed.
We would have warning of an incoming solar flare, while parts of it do travel at the speed of light, light still takes about 8 minutes from the sun to Earth. However, the more detrimental impacts would come from a corona ejection, which lags 1-3 days behind the actual solar flare.

If the atmosphere was stronger, would it be harder to see SOLAR FLARES?
Would a stronger ionosphere/ozone/atmosphere make resistance on the visibility of Solar flares? Not like Northern Lights, but the Aug 3rd, 2010 solar flare storm.
Answer: There wasn't a flare on August 3. There was one on August 1. It took two days for the ejected matter to reach us. What occurred on August 3 WAS Northern Lights (unless you were in the Southern Hemisphere, then it would've been Southern Lights), caused by matter ejected from the Sun interacting with Earth's Geomagnetic Field.
As it stands, you can't really see a solar flare without a telescope.
A higher atmospheric pressure would increase atmospheric scattering and make it harder for us to determine anything in the night sky of low magnitude. Of the objects which were bright enough to see, the 'shimmer' would be greater.

What effect does sunspots and SOLAR FLARES have on Earths weather, and do they have different effects?
I recall this topic disscussed in physics class, however that was many many years ago. I also cant remember if the Solar flares have an efect on weather paterns or just the Van Allen radiation belts?
Answer: This is a very good question. Not only may it cause interference in certain radio frequencies at the earth's surface but it's greatest effects are on satellites and humans in space. For example, the very first launch of the Shuttle had to be delayed due to a very active solar flare at the time. Satellites can experience what are called SEUs or Single event upsets when nuclear particles in the flare reach on-board computer chips and sensor detectors. Sometimes these events have rendered a satellite useless for quite some time.

Crying Wolf Over SOLAR FLARES? | Daily Pundit
WASHINGTON (AP) — An impressive solar flare is heading toward Earth and could disrupt power grids, satellite navigating systems and airplane flights. But probably not. We seem to be getting one of these every month or so.
How are SOLAR FLARES dangerous for astronauts?
It takes Solar flares 8 minutes to travel from the sun to the earth.
So why do astronauts have to react instantly when they observe a flare?
Answer: Energetic protons from Solar flares can damage Earth-orbiting satellites and endanger astronauts.
they are closer to the sun than we at our computers are on the ground of the Earth are.
How?
A study of the most powerful solar flare of the past 500 years suggests that another like it would carry enough punch to kill astronauts in a poorly shielded spacecraft. The crew of a future mission to Mars might be at risk unless their craft is made of the right materials.
Solar flares send high-energy protons streaming through the solar system, and the radiation is sometimes intense enough to endanger the health of astronauts. In January, the two men on the International Space Station had to shelter in the bulkier Russian side of the station during a particularly powerful series of flares.
Scientists have only been able to directly measure the radiation from solar eruptions for the past four decades. The sun probably produces flares bigger than any seen during this time, so to estimate the worst-case event, they used to simply add together the intensities of two known events, or combine the properties peculiar to each.
Now, Lawrence Townsend of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, US, and his colleagues have calculated the radiation effects of the most powerful solar flare ever recorded, based on evidence that the flare left behind in Greenland's ice nearly 150 years ago.
The event was seen by the British astronomer Richard Carrington in September 1859 (New Scientist print edition, 4 September 2004). It easily surpassed the monster eruption of March 1989, which knocked out the power grid in Quebec, Canada.
High-energy protons
The radiation from the Carrington flare created nitrates and beryllium-10 in Earth's upper atmosphere. These ended up frozen into Greenland ice, allowing scientists today to measure their levels in ice cores.
The amount of nitrates implies that Earth's atmosphere was hit by about 20 billion high-energy protons per square centimetre, more than in any other event of the past 500 years. And the beryllium reveals that the energy spectrum of these protons was roughly equivalent to that of a flare recorded in August 1972.
Townsend's team used this information to calculate the radiation doses astronauts would receive from a Carrington-type flare, given different levels of shielding. They found that astronauts behind only a few centimetres of aluminium - the shielding found in the average spacecraft - would suffer a dose that could cause acute radiation sickness and possibly even death.
This should not alarm astronauts on the space station, says Townsend. Parts of the station have enough shielding even for this worst-case event, and the Sun's activity is closely monitored, so the crew should get several hours' warning to hide if a huge flare erupts.
But it may have implications for the design of long-duration interplanetary manned missions. Conventional aluminium might not be the best choice of building material for a spacecraft for Mars. "Aluminium is not a good radiation shield," says Townsend. "We are looking at alternative materials, such as polyethylene and carbon foams impregnated with hydrogen. A worst-case event would probably be survivable if you use some other material than aluminium."

Can the Earths magnetic field changing affect the SOLAR FLARES?
I heard that the poles are switching, also that the Solar flares dissrupt the protective field around the earth that causes temperature increases? It is linked to global warming.
I know my facts are messed up in my head, can you clarify this?
Answer: Little or nothing the Earth can do would affect the sun.
Much that the sun can do effects the Earth.
The Earth is protected from the ravages of space and intense UV by its thick complex layer of atmospheres. This series of swirling and changing atmospheric layers is kept in place by the Earth's very strong but constantly shifting magnetic field. The magnetic field is caused by the spinning and churning of the Earth's molten core.
Like the weather, changes in the Earth's magnetic field can be predicted but because of their complexity we can only get a general forecast. Starting sometime in the next 20-50 years the Earth's magnetic field will go through a big flux that will last 5-10 years.
During that time we will need to take extra precaution to avoid long sun exposure, heat stroke, sunburn, and other short term and long term exposure dangers. Magnetic compasses will malfunction. Weather will be erratic.
Then it will even itself out and become "normal" again for another 10,ooo years or so.
PS: “Global Warming” is an entirely different process (if it exists at all). It will be nearly impossible to measure any effect of humans on the global environment with so many other changes going on.
Though we are clearly destroying local environments and habitats with our continuing urban sprawl (we do love our concrete and garbage), we seem to have little effect on the entire planet besides making the neighborhood we live in less habitable for all living things.
Surprisingly, carbon dioxide levels seem to be lower then expected and the receding of glaciers is slower than it should be considering we are still moving away from our last ice age.
The term Global Warming was a theory of one possible type of damage we could be doing to the Earth. The data is in and it is not happening. Unfortunately many corporations are invested in the term and refuse to let it go. That is sad because many people have stopped looking for real dangers to our environment and are pushing an outdated agenda and political model.

How can I use a microwave oven to protect my laptop against SOLAR FLARES or epmS?
Novice pioneer survivalist woman here that has no idea of how the microwave can be used to protect my laptop or radio, etc in case EMP or Solar flares. As I am just entering into the wonderful world of prepping and have no understanding of such technical matters as constructing a faraday cage (I dont have any carpentry skills either...sigh), I need to know basic info on easy prepping to protect these items. Thanks for any help.
Answer: An EMP will induce currents in any electronic devices, whether or not they are powered up, and destroy them (usually by way of a static discharge across a MOSFET gate or forward bias of JFET devices). You could conceivably protect your laptop by putting it in your microwave (without turning the microwave on, of course!), but you do not need to do anything to protect yourself from Solar flares. They happen all the time and never cause problems with consumer electronic devices.
Occasionally a very large solar flare will cause a voltage surge in the grid. If you're on grid power, there's not much you can do about this, except use surge protectors.

Solar fares to a greater extent can wipe off larger part of life on the planet if our planet is not shielded. Is there a way we can protect Earths atmosphere from these flares, do we have any technology or anything which can prevent this, rather than watching this happen...
Answer: We have a maximum of Solar flares every eleven years. They sometimes interfere with communications, but they haven't presented any danger to human life. There is no reason to believe that the next one will present any more danger than those in the past.
"Can Our Sun Produce a Killer Flare?
The short answer to this is "no".
The longer answer is a little more involved. Whilst a solar flare from out Sun, aimed directly at us, could cause secondary problems such as satellite damage and injury to unprotected astronauts and blackouts, the flare itself is not powerful enough to destroy Earth, certainly not in 2012. I dare say, in the far future when the Sun begins to run out of fuel and swell into a red giant, it might be a bad era for life on Earth, but we have a few billion years to wait for that to happen. There could even be the possibility of several X-class flares being launched and by pure bad luck we may get hit by a series of CMEs and X-ray bursts, but none will be powerful to overcome our magnetosphere, ionosphere and thick atmosphere below."
