How bad will the SOLAR STORMS of 2008 be?
The coming Solar storms are supposed to be the worst since the advent of satellite dependency for communications.
Answer: this is an 11 year cycle of our sun. it will start revving up around 2008 and should peak around 2012. we have had them in the past say about 22 years ago. If it dose happen the thing we need IS solar panels. because the transformers on the planet will be taken out by power surges of the sun and we will be without power for as much as 10 years while they rebuild them. (we really need alternative energy then) but i really don't think it is something we really need to worry about.

What kind of problems can SOLAR STORMS cause here on Earth?
I heard the 2012 thing there is a possibility of Solar storms, can cause power outages, and high winds, and what else?
Answer: the Solar storms with our weaked ozone layer, will cause all of the above mentioned on this subject,, plus human skin, is very sensitive to the radiation so sun bathing will be completely out as you will need protection from the Solar radiation, when ever your outside. As this can cause skin Cancer. As it does now only much faster. But this could be the answer to our energy crisis. As Solar Cells, will be much more effective and wind power generators much more useful if were still here to use it. Now, on a scarier note, since I have notice some of the post that want to see something of this source well here goes,,,title ( IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?) if we were certain that were not alone in the universe, every part of our world view and every aspect of our lives could be fundamentally changed. Today., it is estimated that our glaxay, the Milky Way, contains some 250 billion stars, and the universe around 100 billion galaxies. It seems almost inconceivable that we are alone in a gigantic lifeless universe, but physical evidnce for any form in any galaxy is non- existent: no certain conclusions have yet been drawn from the fossils from Mars. However, the theory that our nine planets were formed from the dust and gas resulting from the birth of the sun could hold truth for other star systems. More than thirty years ago, the American astronomer, Frank Drake, calulated that there are approximately 40 billion stars in the Milky Way which are to the Sun, and he speculated the most of these stars were orbited by at least one planet, of which he reckoned 10% could be suitable for life. It is hard to believe that the Earth should be the only planet out of 4 billion to sustain life. There is however expectation stirring in the scientific community that other life will be found in our solar system in the not too distant future. The hopes of exobiologists are pinned on the icy Jovian moon, Europa, were oceans could contain " the primeval soup of life: . The present of Galileo fly - past may very well yield evidence that we will not be alone in the new millennium. (SHOCKER) !! THIS WAS SAID 60 YRS AGO,, AND THEN AGAIN 10 YEARS AGO... AND ALL DONE BY ASTONOMERS AND ASTROLOGERS... THIS WAS SAID AND WRITTEN IN THE YEARS OF THE VIOLET TIMES,, SO NOW HERE WE ARE IN THE GOLDEN ERA, AND THINK JUST THINK HAVE HOW MUCH THIS HAS COME TRUE,,, LOOK WHAT WE HAVE FOUND,, EXAMPLE: NEW STARS,, NOW THEIR DOWN GRADING PLUTO, FROM A PLANET, NOW THINK ABOUT THE MOON? LETS SEE WE HAVE THE BLACK MOON, WHICH IS MORE TALKED ABOUT EVER BEFORE,, WE HAVE CHIRON NOW TOO.. AND YOU KNOW SOMETHING ELSE? You know how many people yet they heaven forbid dont want to be associated with this,, but they are, Example: like a man who follows the Moon, to see if its a good day to go fishing? Well, the moon is as you know is a grand predictive way of many sources. But, do people tell you that they follow the moons transits to and when to start fishing or sell that house or watch those stocks? Look even the police if you notice well travel in pairs when its a full moon due to they know thats when the most crime will hit,, well let me give you something to think about of lunar Superstitions to live by as so many people do but refuse to say!! so lets play this game and see if it works ok? its late, were all up and we seem to be a state of mind of all the possibilites of the supernatural,, so here's a few for you ,, then I will go to sleep,,and say my prayers~~
1. hold up a piece of money to the New Moon and you will receive money.
2. a girl can gain beautiful beauty of her complexion if she sleeps in the moon light.
3. If there is a frost between the New Moon, and the full Moon, it will not nip plants.
4. Plant seeds, when the Moon is full, and they will not do well
5. Scatter manure on the field during the dark of the Moon and it will sink down into the ground.
6. Grass seed will not do well, unless sown in the light of the Moon.
7. If weeds are cut in the dark of the Moon, they will not come up again!
8. If a wife or girlfriend , is impregnated in the full Moon , her husband or boyfriend, will father a Son.
9. Babies, begotten in the light of the Moon, are always girls
10. A Crescent Moon, has its points tilting downward and since it can not hold water look for rain.
11. If the full Moon, is shining there will not be any frost.
12. A kiss blown to the Moon, when she is new makes dreams and wishes come true.
And to all a good night~~ God loves you and so do I,, just dont forget NOT TO LET THE BED BUGS BITE!! OUCH!!

How vulnerable is modern technology to the coming SOLAR STORMS?
"Powerful Solar Storm Could Shut Down U.S. for Months" is the eye catching headline attention grabber, but is that a reasonable assertion?
Answer: No, it is a wild conjecture. We are no more vulnerable to Solar storms today, than we were in 2005 when we were hit with a doozy. Off the charts. Remember it? All the phones were down? TV didn't work? Power was out for weeks and weeks? No? That's because it never happened. Oh, the STORM hit us. It just went completely unnoticed by anyone other than a Solar astronomer.
Basically, sensational stories sell. Don't blame the writer for trying to grab a headline, but when you see a story that says something crazy, its probably something crazy, okay?

Why is everyone so worried about SOLAR STORMS today?
Seriously; every other question in Astronomy and Space seems to be about "Solar storms", with this odd assumption that theyre going to do massive damage to mankind and that one is inevitable. This big of a spike and this consistency of misunderstanding defies coincidence. Is History channel running an end of the world marathon or something? Im honestly wondering what has everyone so stirred up about the subject.
Answer: My friends at Space.com posted a story about Solar storms this morning which was picked up by Yahoo.com and run on their home page. If anyone actually reads the story, they will learn that no solar storm is currently taking place, nor will one take place in the next few years. Do SOLAR STORMS have the possibility to create data loss on a hard drive?
I read we are expecting increased solar storm activity for 2012. I would like to prepare. What would be the best way to protect sensitive data on hard drives (backups and internal).
Would it be preferable to back up things on DVDs, or simply put the backup hard drives in a metal safe deposit box at the bank? Youd think those would be grounded enough but it would prevent nothing against neutrino or proton shower I guess... ???
Answer: No, your HD would be safe, as long as you decouple your computer from the electric power network by using a UPS. Your CPU is at a higher risk for a solar storm than a HD, since the HD is only a very short "antenna", while your CPU is not radiation hardened, so ionizing radiation from a geomagnetic storm can damage it.
Please, instead of letting yourself be turned stupid by such doomsday websites, learn a bit more about what things really are, instead of just swallowing what such frauds try to tell you.
The next solar maximum will be in 2013 and geomagnetic storms are more likely around the solar maximum. But there is no real way to say that there will be a solar storm in 2012, that is also directed towards Earth. All probability.
Neutrinos are called neutrinos because they almost don't interact with matter at all. You need huge detectors under tons of ice for detecting a single neutrino interaction in the huge volume. There is no radiation hazard from neutrinos.
Protons are intercepted by magnetic field and atmosphere of Earth and cause the beautiful Auroras. You need VERY fast protons for having a few of them actually reach the surface of Earth and be detected as cosmic radiation. The strongest proton we have detected had the kinetic energy of a thrown baseball. Such things are part of the normal background radiation on Earth.
Also, the last really strong solar storm was in 1989 and such storms happen only about every 500 years. The chance for a second such strong storm is very low, especially around 2013, because the solar maximum of 2013 will be weaker than the one in 2001. The 1989 storm managed to damage the computers of the Toronto Stock Market.
Instead of getting panic, I recommend you to just do the normal security measures, that are common practice for any professionals. Secure your system from the biggest dangers and establish a standard backup procedure. You should do that anyway. Not because of 2012, but because 2010 has enough dangers for your data. Maybe even more dangers than 2012. 2012 will actually be a damn boring year.
DVDs are no radiation-safe backup media, since they are affected strongly by X-Rays. And storing your HDs in a bank is like taking a shower in a car wash: It is absolutely the worst wrong place for such things. If you really fear radiation damage (as a nuclear war could do ^^ ), you should use magnetic tapes as back-up medium, and stored them in a steel box deep in your basement. Also, you should make sure that your backup has spaceflight grade error correction enabled. Even during a "once in 10,000 years" solar storm, you would not get radiation on Earth, that spacecraft doesn't already experience during a calm day.
I don't expect to listen to the radio station from Madrid (2000 km away) in my car again before 2013... one of the funny things that a solar storm can do to your everyday life.
We have survived much more bad things in human history and until electricity was everyday technology, we didn't actually notice Solar storms at all. The first time a solar storm was directly discovered, was the 1859 storm, that was so strong that auroras had been visible over the Caribbean and telegraph lines melted. The 1989 storm was almost as strong, and produced Auroras over Texas. In 2001, the Solar storms had been at least so strong that auroras became visible over northern Germany (I had seen them myself - and my computer was not affected).

SOLAR STORMS.!?!?!?!?!?
So. I just read about this solar storm that is supposed to hit the earth in 2012!?!?! And. I have no clue about these things. and I panic about anything. I hate that! and Now I want to know. Because the news covered this. Im 13. and this stuff is freaking me out. Like what will these Solar storms do to disrupt the earth. or will they do anything to the earth? PLUS: That David Morrison guy from Nasa who said things about 2012 saying its not true. Is he lying?
Answer: Solar "storms" are going on all the time. I see them just about every time I look at the Sun, which is nearly every clear day. This is normal solar activity which has gone on for BILLIONS of years with mankind being totally unaware of it most of the time. Individual Solar storms cannot be predicted in advance, but over the centuries that the Sun has been studied, we've noticed that solar activity, ON AVERAGE, comes and goes in 11-year cycles. This is, as I said, just an average, and we really don't know exactly when this 11-year maximum will occur until after it happens, when we look back over years of observations of the Sun. Again, 11 years is just an average: some cycles are longer, some shorter.
Several years ago, the next maximum was predicted for 2012. However the Sun, always liking to surprise us, slowed down its cyle a bit this time around. It stayed stuck at minimum for a couple of years. Hence, astronomers are now predicting that it will hit its maximum activity not in 2012 at all, but in May 2013. Of course, we won't really know exactly when the maximum occurred until long after it happens, because we can only pinpoint it with hindsight. Because of the prolonged solar minimum, we are also predicting that this coming maximum will be less intense than average.
So the point in all this is: Solar storms are normal everyday activities of the Sun, and are nothing to be afraid of.
David Morrison is a really well respected scientist, and is not lying. Why would he do that? He's just speaking for thousands of other scientists whose job it is to study the Sun. These are the people _I_ trust, because they really know what they're talking about, unlike the nutcases who are writing the "2012" nonsense.

Is there anything we can do to prepare us against SOLAR STORMS from the sun?
I keep hearing and reading about how Solar storms can cut off electricity and send us back 100 years into the past (not literally, but like, no modern technology).
This looks very hard to prepare for. What can we do, if any?
Answer: It's unlikely that there will be any effects, but in general, if I thought the electricity would cut out (like a Hurricane was coming), I would prepare for the loss of electricity by freezing lots of water into ice in my freezer. Food and water would be my necessities. It helps to have some cash set aside in the house in case ATMs fail, but I think most people do not have the discipline not to spend it if it's there. We live in a house, so other things we could solve in the old way, using fire for cooking or warmth, or sleeping bags to keep warm at night.
Entertainment is not a necessity, but there would always be books, sudoku, and conversation.

One of the most powerful Solar storms in the last five years was unleashed yesterday after a massive solar flare erupted from the sun. Space weather ...
SOLAR STORMS?????????????????????????????????????????
what is a solar storm? if one happens anytime soon will there be deaths?
Answer: A solar storm is when something like a strong solar flare erupts from the Sun and sends out a mass of high energy electrons and protons into space. Sometimes the Earth gets struck by these high energy particles, but the magnetic field of the Earth safely deflects much of the energy. Some of the energy does get pulled into the magnetic poles of the Earth and as it does some of the effects from particularly powerful flares include electrical and radio transmission disruptions mainly at high latitudes. Solar storms are not that uncommon, especially during periods of high sunspot activity. In fact one of the strongest ones recorded happened a few years ago. As stated earlier, the magnetic field of the earth deflects most of the energy thus life on the surface is safe from the direct effects of this high energy radiation.

Are the upcoming 2013 SOLAR STORMS going to wipe out technology as we know it?
If you have seen the 2013 solar storm predictions on the news, youll know what im talking about. In 2013 the meteorologists say there is going to be massive Solar storms causing E.M.P.s to effect planet earth in a major way. What do you think these storms will really end up doing?
Answer: First of all, there is no way to predict when Solar storms will occur, at least not more than a few days in advance. Also, Solar storms do occur from time to time, and they have little effect on us for the most part. Extremely strong ones can disrupt power transmissions in higher latitudes as well as cause radio blackouts, otherwise they are pretty harmless as the magnetic field of the Earth protects us.
And yes, meteorologists do not predict this kind of stuff. It's an astronomy specialty, as DaveSFV indicated.

SOLAR STORMS we are supposed to experience in the future?
I heard somewhere that we are supposed to get huge Solar storms in the near future. what could be affected if they were to hit earth and the space around earth?
Answer: National power grids could overheat and air travel severely disrupted while electronic items, navigation devices and major satellites could stop working after the Sun reaches its maximum power in a few years.
Senior space agency scientists believe the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013, Britain's The Daily Telegraph reported.
In a new warning, Nasa said the super storm would hit like “a bolt of lightning” and could cause catastrophic consequences for the world’s health, emergency services and national security unless precautions are taken.
Scientists believe it could damage everything from emergency services’ systems, hospital equipment, banking systems and air traffic control devices, through to “everyday” items such as home computers, iPods and Sat Navs.
Due to humans’ heavy reliance on electronic devices, which are sensitive to magnetic energy, the storm could leave a multi-billion pound damage bill and “potentially devastating” problems for governments.

Whats the difference between solar winds and SOLAR STORMS?
I CAN T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOLAR WINDS AND Solar storms. AND WHAT STARTS A SOLAR STORM/WIND
Answer: The solar wind is the stream of particles and radiation continously emitted by the Sun and affects bodies in orbit around it. For example the solar wind produces magnetic and radio interactions with the Van Allen belts around the Earth.
http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr162/lect/sun/wind.html
It might also be used to propel a giant sail as a means of interplanetary travel some day.
http://www.electric-sailing.com/
The Sun is a very agitated body, with massive and rapidly changing magnetic fields and mass and radiation movements which can lead to violent eruptions and mass and radiation emmissions called Solar storms. Coronal mass ejections can throw out tens of thousands of tons of matter in minutes, accompanied by severely increased levels of emmitted radiation. Increased material and radiation loss from storms of course adds to the solar wind, but the massively increased emmissions during storms can mess up comminications on Earth and even shut down power stations.

Using the sea as an analogy, the solar wind is the like normal series of waves and swells ever present on the oceans. Seismic storms from earhquakes and volcanos generate the giant waves and tsunamis that wreak havoc where they reach land just as the massive radiation levels of Solar storms do when they reach the magnetic and electrical fields around a planet like Earth.
Tsunamis are only dangerous when they reach the lower water depths off-shore and the nature of the wave is forced to change.
When they hit the land the waves are forced to give up their energy the full force of the waves is felt.
In mid ocean there is nothing to interact with and nothing to harm.
Likewise with radiation storms. It's when they reach a magnetic or electrical field with which they interact that the harm is done.

Question about SOLAR STORMS or what not?
I have heard some speculations that we are going to have occurring Solar storms that could quite possibly knock us back into the Stone Age, is there any truth to this? Are we all going to die in some horrific storm from the sun? And furthermore, is there anyway to survive this Solar Weather? Other then turning off your house hold appliances? One more question...Is there a way to stop this from happening?
Answer: Solar activity measured by the number of solar spots in its surface, goes in a 11 years cycle. The next peak will be roughly during the winter 2013. Actually something strange happened the last year; as the activity had come to a lowest, it took a longer than usual time to see it coming back and for a long period no sun spot could be seen. But it is back to normal now.
We know that, at its peak, the solar activity and what we call solar storm because it results in great release of particles what is sometimes referred as solar wind, can reach higher than normal values. Something like that happened e.g. sometimes in the 19th century (I forgot the exact date). One visual effect is the northern light (aurora borealis) that is visible far south, as far as north Africa.
Now, what we fear in the future is that such an extraordinary peak of the sun's activity would fry satellites in orbit around the earth. That includes the GPS and all communication satellites. This is a serious problem but, unlikely something that will bring us back into "stone age," at the worst, into the beginning of the last century and only for a short time.
What worries me is that we know that it will happen again some time in the future. But are we prepared? What do we do if all GPS are disabled? Both aviation and seafaring is now extensively relying on the GPS for navigation. Have you see a seaman with a sextant, lately? I think not. At the age of 62, I am perhaps one of the few who can still use a sextant. ... but I digress.
You have nothing to fear from a solar "storm." But there are people out there who love to scare the s**t out of you and ... they are the real danger! I see it every day, on the internet; good news is no news and we love scary stories. I find it very sad.

Are diesel vehicles affected by SOLAR STORMS?
I have a diesel truck as well as a 25,000 watt diesel standby generator for my home. Im curious if they will be affected should a solar flare zap us. Im not too well versed in the whole solar storm issue.
Answer: Most Solar storms don't affect us but occasionally intense electromagnetic disturbances can knock out communications or possibly even overload power grids. I wouldn't worry too much about your diesel truck. Not too sure about your generator but it's highly unlikely to be affected.

THE PRAGMATIST; For Winters Storms, a Stay Bag
FOR those without power after Hurricane Irene, the sound of a neighbors generator was a loud, grating reminder that some people were actually ready for the storm. How do SOLAR STORMS affect citizen band radio reception?
I recently read an article on the Yahoo! homepage about the sun entering a period of Solar storms. What am I to expect from this? Hopefully somebody answers who has experienced this period before.
Answer: The frequencies at which CB radios operate can be refracted by the ionosphere, under the right conditions, and propagated over great distances; this is what's referred to in CB circles as 'shooting skip', and more conventionally as a 'bounce'. The occurrence of this phenomenon is dependent upon solar activity, as during periods of high activity, the ionosphere is more intensely charged by the solar wind.
During a solar minimum, it's next to impossible. During a solar maximum, it's not unknown to be able to engage in conversations over thousands of miles. A CME event (solar storm) would be pretty much perfect conditions for it, though I would expect that it would make for some very noisy channels, as not every distant source which reaches your radio will be coming in clearly.
