Could astronauts be sent into space using giant weather ballons?

Do you think it would work if a whole bunch of giant weather balloons were attached to a capsule that could hold a few astronauts was sent into space, and once the balloons pop, the capsule would have some sort of propulsion system so that they can land safely. Its a stupid idea that I just thought of 2 minutes ago.
Answer: Not in quite that form, but check out the book: Floating To Space. The Airship To Orbit Program. by John M. Powell ISBN 978-1-894959-73-5 Apogee Books, available at the Air and Space museum. I've seen some pretty crazy things flying and in the history books from the Experimental Aircraft Association. I think that what Mr. Powell is proposing is possible, although I suspect some structural design difficulties that I sure wish I could get Burt Rutan to help with. Nothing stupid about the idea, you just need more education about the different flight realms you are dealing with.

Answer: E) the Sun Although other things in space also can impact the Earth with "Space weather." The only thing they really cause, is noise in electrical circuits. This is the reason for the static sound on your radio or your TV. However, the Sun is monitored constantly because of the solar radiation that it puts off. This radiation can impact our planets magnetic field and in very rare occasions cause a magnetic flux ring around the Earth to snap away like a rubber band. After the bombardment is finished it will return to normal, but the process of this will bombard the surface with microwave radiation in some cases and cause electrical signals to travel down any conducting material on the surface of the planet. (Like throwing a fork in the microwave oven. Lotta sparks.) These events can knock power out in large areas on the Earth's surface making "Space weather" a concern for scientists.

Do you think NASA should launch and land the space shuttle during nasty weather to get practice? I thought the whole purpose of NASA was to research the extremes of air and space flight. Plus if the space shuttles are almost done with their service anyway, it wouldnt be that big of a loss if they blew up now. Just like we learned a lot from the Challlenger and Columbia blowing up, wed probably get more good science if we did lose one to weather.
Answer: Absolutely not. Why would anyone in their right mind want to take such a huge risk to human life?

I was casually telling an aquaintance that a news report mentioned the cost of gasoline would be affected by what kind of winter was in store, i.e. based on supply and demand. She proceeds to tell me that the space shuttle affects the weather. She said (paraphrasing), You watch, when the space shuttle returns to earth in Florida it will rain alot there. Basically, space missions affect the environment and the weather. I think this is nuts. What do you think?
Answer: I would doubt it, the shuttle is just a little mosquito in the big scheme of things. And it sure seems like it rains a lot in Florida anyhow. And if you look back at the general weather patterns over the years, it probably is typical. Actually, I think it is raining in FLa now, or at least it is in Georgia and they are pretty close, and I think the shuttle is still flying.

Does sending shuttles, satellites, probes, etc into space affect our weather?

Please help settle a family argument. Every time we have bad weather my mom will blame it whatever was launched into space. Weather happens in the troposphere, not in deep space. Some of my family believes when we send stuff into space it punches holes in the atmosphere, causing wacky weather. This sounds like old wives tales to me.

Weather as we know it in the atmosphere is using air and water to transfer energy to try to equalize the energy balance on earth through the use of the various changes of state with water using air as a medium. In space you are dealing with the amount and forms of energy that transfer heat through a vacuum. Space weather not only looks at the visible light energy but all forms of energy that is capable of traveling through the vacuum of space. Answer: How's the Space weather today? Quiet enough for a safe trip to the moon? Quiet enough to operate your GPS navigation system accurately? So active that it would crash your power grid? Like our everyday weather, Space weather can change suddenly, become violent, and interfere with our lives. Space weather is driven by the sun. The solar wind, a plasma of protons and electrons, streams out of the sun and changes the shape of Earth's magnetic field. Near Earth's surface, this field is like the field of a giant bar magnet, as shown. Further out in space, the streaming solar wind flattens the field towards the sun and forms a long tail pointing away from the sun, as shown. This region where the solar wind and magnetic field interact is called the magnetosphere. The magnetosphere traps particles from the solar wind. This complex system responds strongly to changes in the sun's surface, especially to sunspots, which follow an eleven-year cycle. Sunspots can produce large solar flares, bursts of electromagnetic radiation, and outpourings of charged particles called "coronal mass ejections." Changes in Space weather result, sometimes with devastating effect. August, 1972: During the time of preparation for Apollo 17, a violent solar flare produced intense radiation that would have killed the astronauts had they been in space at that time March, 1989: * Vivid auroral displays extended as far south as Arizona * Electric power was knocked out in the province of Quebec for nine hours January, 1997: A communications satellite failed a few hours after a coronal mass ejection smashed into the magnetosphere. Just as with our ordinary weather here on Earth, physicists make measurements and build models to understand and predict Space weather. Accurate predictions can help protect power and communications systems and enable astronauts to avoid dangerous conditions in space. Note: 1989, the year of the Quebec blackout, was a maximum in the eleven-year sunspot cycle. On the other hand, 1972, the year of the solar flare mentioned above, was near the sunspot minimum, but in fact flares can in fact occur at any time during the solar cycle.

If light takes 8 minutes to come from the Sun, how could NASA predict bad "SPACE WEATHER" from the Sun?

NASA wants to use satellites to watch the Sun when it emits dangerous flares that could cause power outages and such. But anything happening from the Sun cant be detected until 8 minutes later and by then its too late. Whats the point?
Answer: We see the events causing bad Space weather with the speed of light, but the coronal mass ejection doesn't travel anywhere close to light speed, so we have a day or two warning before the CME arrives.
