I am moving into another apartment but I one of my considerations is tornado safety. I have not had much luck locating shelters in my area. I need to find shelters near my new apartment> I read on here that other people have suggested people go to Storm shelters who lie in apartment complexes?
Answer: Contact your county/city public safety department about buildings that are suitable for tornado shelters in your area. While your concern and foresight are commendable, I think you will find, in many parts of the country, that you will not be able to get answers that help. Unless the solid walled shelter is actually part of the complex it may be very difficult to get to a shelter in the short time available when warnings are issued and you might find that the one you planned to do to is locked because people in charge of it didn't hear any warning.

Answer: Storm shelters have become big business in many parts of the USA. Based on the fact that you live in Kansas, I'm guessing that you are looking for a shelter in case of a tornado or high winds. While there are lots of commercially available shelters on the market, you are correct in that they tend to be rather expensive. In the end, all you need is adequate protection for a relatively short period of time. Years ago, before refrigeration became commonplace, most people used their root cellars for Storm shelters. People simply dug a hole in the ground and lined the walls with stone, brick, or concrete blocks. The really skilled builders constructed domed roofs out of brick or stone while the rest made a flat roof using timbers. The dirt that came out of the hole was then mounded over the structure. People stored root vegetables in them for winter and sometimes packed them with block ice and sawdust for use during the summer. Enough room was always left for the family in case of a storm. Todays Storm shelters actually mimic these early shelters, albeit the modern ones offer a lot more comfort and amenities. To my way of thinking, all you need is a simple shelter for a short period of time; and I don't care about cable TV, air conditioning, etc.. There are lots of plans available for someone who has more time and muscle power (for digging) then money. I am sure that you can put together a decent shelter for a small amount of money if you are willing to do the work yourself. Can someone help me figure out a cheap solution for a storm shelter. SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY!!! I live in Kansas and do not have a basement and have checked into the prices of a storm shelter and that is out of my budget - do you know of any other ideas?
Answer: There are different kinds of Storm shelters.... just which type have you checked on? You can get both underground, or above ground shelters, in steel... a less expensive alternative would be a fiberglass underground unit. You can also have one made of poured concrete. These all come in a variety of sizes and features (and expense, hehe) You can check with a local concrete contractor for a poured enclosure, and do an online search for fiberglass and steel stormshelter manufacturers...there are quite a few out there. If this is going to be above ground, youre going to need to go with steel or concrete... wood just will not withstand the force of a tornado. If you are without some form of storm shelter, then you would want to find the safest place in your home.... an interior closet, hallway, or bathroom (without a wall on the exterior if possible). The close proximity of the wall studs in these locations will offer a little protection...that's better than no protection at all, but again, its not likely to stand up to a direct hit from a tornado. The best option is a buried shelter, or one in a basement. If you have to put one above ground, think seriously about a thick steel unit, or concrete with at least 6" thick walls. Good Luck

With the use of some photos and videos, you can make it both informative and fairly easy to do. It will require some homework and investigation...you already know that. Answer: I, too, was born and raised in east Texas (Longview/Marshall area) and have seen the bugs in storm cellars the other responder referred too. I'm a contractor and have looked at the prefab units, but I've never been involved with their installation. With that said, the installation of the prefab module should be simple. A backhoe digs out a dimensionally appropriate hole in the ground and the module is lowered into place and back filled with excavated soil. The prefab module is factory built and watertight (not a bug haven). Electrical power can also be installed to provide lighting. With my limited knowledge and experience, I'd choose the prefab module over the site built cellar.
