ON BASEBALL; At the Hall of Fame, Forgetting History and Perhaps Repeating It
The noble idea of limiting the Baseball Hall of Fame to the truly elite is a fantasy. Babe Ruth and Willie Mays have plaques in Cooperstown, but so do Rick Ferrell and Jesse Haines. BARRY LARKIN elected to baseball Hall of Fame - Yahoo! News
From Yahoo! News: Barry larkin was elected to baseballs Hall of Fame on Monday with plenty of room to spare.
Does BARRY LARKIN and Jack Morris finally get elected to the HOF this time?
BQ: Bernie Williams is on the list for the first time in 2012. What percentage do you think he will get?
Answer: Larkin I think has an excellent chance. He has only been on the ballot twice before, though, so I would hardly call an election this time around "finally". He was certainly one of the best shortstops I saw in the 90's. He could hit for average, hit for power, had speed, and had a pretty good glove. First year on the ballot he was over 50%, last year 62%, and the third time could well be the charm. Especially with the lack of marquis players added to the ballot this year.
Morris would be a "finally", though. Perhaps the best starter of the 1980's and that great World Series shutout in 1991. I know as a Twins fan I will be forever greatful for that one. He's been on the ballot 12 years already. His vote total keeps slowly climbing, but it's still barely 50%. It would take a real surge of support to get him into the Hall. I think what's been preventing him is that he never had a single season with an ERA below 3.00 and his career ERA is 3.90, much higher than most HOF starting pitchers. The lack of star players making their ballot debut may be his only chance to make the jump to 75%. If he doesn't make it this time, I think he will have to wait for Veterans Committee consideration.
Bernie Wiliams will be on the All Star ballot for several years. He'll probably be somewhere in the mid-20's to mid-30's for percentage. His Yankee captaincy and reputation as a clutch postseason player will be his base of support. He is the best player to make his debut on the ballot this time around. However, the only Hall of Fame I think he belongs in is the Yankees Hall of Fame.
This was a fun question to consider.
Edit: Tom is correct. Bernie was not the captain. He was, however, one of the leaders on the World Series teams so my sentence should have read "His Yankee leadership and reputation as a clutch postseason player will be his base of support." Thank you for the correction and the kind words about my answer.

How did BARRY LARKIN win the NL MVP in 1995?
He had 15 HR, 66 RBIs, .319 average, and 98 runs scored. Good year, but not even close to what Id consider an MVP year. Greg Maddux went 19-2 with an ERA under 2!
Answer: He collected the most votes in the balloting.
OK, that's a bit dry and technical. How did his season stack up against other NL players?
Here's the voting: http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_1995.shtml#NLmvp
Assuming that all the serious candidates got some consideration, let's kick around the top few.
Bichette (second) had a very good season, and the Rox reached the playoffs. But he was just a plodding outfielder, and even then some writers were recognizing the effects of playing in the thin air, even if they would never admit it in print.
Maddux (third) had a God-like season. But (a) it was what was expected of him, at the time, (b) Atlanta reached the playoffs but that, too, was what was expected, and the trump, (c) Pitchers Don't Win MVP. (Fie upon all voting writers who accept this!) (Although, to their credit, seven voters put Maddux as their #1 vote, as opposed to six for Bichette.)
Piazza (fourth) led the Dodgers to the playoffs, but he was still something of a kid and there were (always) suspicions about his defensive play.
Karros (fifth) -- oh please. I suppose his decent season might have split a "Dodgers vote" and cost Piazza, but this is easily his peak season (at age 27, of course) and, well, sometimes lightning gets stuck in a bottle.
Sanders (sixth) was the biggest power bat on the Reds that year, and Gant (11th) got one first-place vote, because he was also a big bat on the Reds.
Himself (12th) was simply posting another Bonds-class year, the kind that had to get some down-ballot votes. (I mention him here just because it will annoy the haters, and that's always such good amusement.)
Larkin won because (a) he did have a great season and (b) he did it from the shortstop position on a postseason team. He hit, hit for power, fielded very well, and stole a lotta bases -- the kind of "all around" threat that, coupled with winning, the voters rather appreciate, perhaps a little too enthusiastically, but they didn't make a bad choice here. (I'd have gone with Maddux, but the writers, they just have This Thing About Voting For Pitchers.)
Larkin winning was certainly more palatable than had Bichette.

Since a good but not great player like BARRY LARKIN gets in the HOF does that mean Carlos Beltran also gets in?
Larkin was a good player but certainly not a great one .295 198 bombs 960 rbi 300+ steals 3 gold gloves. So when a good player like Beltran retires will he also get elected?
Beltran .283 302 bombs 1146 rbi 293 steals 3 gold gloves.
BTW the writers robbed Piazza of the MVP in 1995 & gave it to Larkin.

Barry larkin is one of my baseball all time favorites. 12 time all-star Golden Glove winner and won a championship in 1990. Will he get into the Hall of fame and where should he be ranked in the top short stops of all time?

Will Dale Murphy or BARRY LARKIN make the MLB Hall of Profit this year?
Its well documented that the MLB hall of fame has become a spectacle that generates loads of cash for cooperstown. Being that they need to vote in at least 1 guy every year that was good but not great to keep the annual concert going do you think Murph or the ole clubhouse politician Barry larkin will get in?
Answer: Barry larkin should breeze in.
He is or was one of the 6 or 7 best shortstops of all time. See following list:
1. Honus Wagner
2. Arkie Vaughn
3. Cal Ripken, Jr.
4. Robin Yount
5.Ernie Banks
6. Ozzie Smith
7. Barry larkin
8. Alan Trammell
9. Pee Wee Reese
10. Joe Cronin
All but Larkin and Trammell are in the Hall. Are you seriously arguing that these guys are not worthy?
And what's wrong with the Hall turning a profit. They just plow the money back into improving the Hall of Fame's many exhibits and displays.

Do you think BARRY LARKIN will make the Hall of Fame vote on monday?
I think this year will be his best chance.
Answer: I think he will. I think he deserves it. He was a great shortstop and played about half of his career before the offensive explosion that came largely from the expansion teams of the mid 1990's. Of course he had the MVP year in 1995 and was a 9 time silver slugger too, the most ever for a shortstop. He was always a great clubhouse guy too, he even learned Spanish to build rapport with his Spanish speaking teammates. He was a great captain for the Reds.

Well January 9, 2012 be the day when BARRY LARKIN gets the call for Cooperstown?
Do you think he will receive the 75% necessary to join the hall of fame?
Answer: One need only review Larkins' numbers to know that he is definitely a HOFer. He "O" & "D" stats are very comparable to Ozzie Smith plus Larkin's career batting average is more than 30 higher. I have to believe that he will get the 75% necessary this January.

Judging from their entire careers, who did more to help their team win, BARRY LARKIN, or Ozzie Smith?
Why?
Answer: First of all, while defense is important, it is simply absurd to claim that Ozzie or Clemente or Johnny Bench or anybody saved more runs that most people drive in.
Ozzie was an A+ defensive shortstop: i think we can all agree to this.
He was about average as a hitter for a shortstop, 87 OPS+, 4.1 runs created per game (as if Ozzie were the only hitter).
Larkin was an A or A- fielder; he had better than average FP and far better range factor. He also was about 50% better offensively in OPS+, runs created per game, and he scored and drove in many more runs despite playing hundreds of fewer games. His numbers were also better in the post-season than the regular season.
Without looking at VORP/WARP/Win Shares and such, I am confident that an excellent defensive and offensive shortstop (Larkin) was worth more than a beyond-excellent defensive and offensively average one (Smith).

I think that Barry larkin will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame but Fred McGriff will not.
Answer: I think they both will.
Larkin was a great shortstop and was a star at the position before it became the star position.
If you asked a year ago about McGriff, I would say no. However, with the steroid scandal, McGriff's numbers look a lot better. He was a solid power hitter who didn't amass his numbers suspiciously over a few seasons, but consistantly over a long period of time.
I think he stands a good chance at getting in for the backlash of steroids and writers wanting to show that the "monster stats" aren't all that matter.
