Is there any accurate peak hour for a METEOR SHOWER? The exact timings at which a METEOR SHOWER will be best?
Or does the peak of a Meteor shower last for hours together with equal hourly rate during those hours? Or does the exact peak occurs for just a few minutes?
How many hours will the peak of perseids shower be? I need the exact peak timings of the perseids shower. Thanks in advance.
Answer: Regular (annual) Meteor showers occur when the Earth goes through a stream of debris that orbits the Sun along the orbit of a comet (the comet is responsible for shedding the stuff).
Some stream are spread out and it takes Earth a few days to cross it. There is a peak when Earth is in the thickest portion.
Other streams are quite narrow and Earth crosses them in an hour or two. These streams are usually "young" and not spread out evenly along the comet's orbit.
The Leonids are a good example of that: A very short peak and a shower that lasts about an hour or two at most; the hourly rate changes from year to year, with the highest rates every 33 years or so.
The Perseids are better spread out along the orbit (each year brining about the same hourly rate) with a peak around August 12, but the shower has a good rate for a few days either side (with more than half the hourly rate for about one day on either side of the peak).
---
Then there is your location on Earth. Perseus (the apparent radiant of the shower) is high north in declination and it rises quite late in August.
So pick a spot where you can observe the NE corner of the sky near midnight. The best times are after midnight and before the Moon rises (the Moonlight really hides the fainter ones).
One year we counted 60 in 45 minutes at the peak, and 120 over a two-hour period (that included the 60 in 45 minutes); then the Last Quarter Moon rose and the observed rate dropped below 20 per hour (because of the Moon light).

Dec 20, 2011 ... The first major Meteor shower of 2012 is the Quadrantid shower, predicted to peak on the morning of January 4.
How good would a METEOR SHOWER be if you were watching it a day after its peak?
The perseids Meteor shower? Its said to peak in the very early hours of August 14th, but what if I watched it like that night, or the next morning? Would there even be anything to see? How many per hour do you think there would be?
Thanks.
Answer: It depends on thew particular Meteor shower. Some, like the Perseids, have very broad peaks, so are about equally intense for several nights in a row. Others have very narrow peaks, an hour or less.

What time does the METEOR SHOWER start tonight in southern california?
The next Meteor shower is the Perseids on the night of August 12. The Moon is just a couple of days past new at the showers peak, so there will be no moonlight to interfere with the faint meteors. The shower should reach its peak in the hours after midnight (before dawn on August 13), with a maximum of a few dozen meteors visible per hour.
Answer: I'mm 55 degrees N and ours is 1030pm onwards, yours should be slightly later

Answer: there is ALWAYS a minro Meteor shower occurring, they have catalogued over four hundred of these annual events.
only about a half dozen are really noteworthy, the most recent was the geminids a couple of weeks ago, the next is the quadrantids peaking on january 4.
you probably are thinking of the perseids, a peak in mid august, usually a favorite of many because it occurs on warmer nights for most of the worlds populations

METEOR SHOWER?
did anyone see the Meteor shower last night on the west coast? i overslept my alarm and didnt get to see it :(
Answer: The peak is tonight, so you should still be able to catch some meteors. The Alpha Aurigids actually last about 2 weeks (Aug 25 - Sept 8).
This shower is not really a particular spectacular one - it only averages about 10 meteors an hour.
The Orionids in October do better at about 20/hr.
But the big one this year is the Geminids, in December at an average of 120/hr.

theres gonna be a Meteor shower in like an hour or two and I need to take some awesome pictures!!! im so excited but I dont really know how to do the cameras settings for a perfect Meteor shower shots. Anyone with DSLR cameras please give me some advice? Thank you!
Answer: To get the streaking effect for the meteors you're going to use a long shutter speed and a tripod - a longer shutter speed is going to capture more of the meteors. And using a large f-stop makes the stars are brighter.
Then all you've gotta do i wait for them to come down while the shutter is open

How good will the METEOR SHOWER be tonight?
Tonight is the only night that will be clear in my area, the rest of the week is rainy. and I REALLY wanted to see the Meteor shower so i was wondering how good it will be tonight.
Answer: Depends on your limiting magnitude, when you observe, how high the radiant is at your latitude, and how much patience you have.
Under perfectly clear skies, with the radiant at your zenith, and zero light pollution, 100 meteors per hour seems like a lock, during the peak. Probably closer to around 60 is you are a few hours off of the peak, but still several per hour for the next few nights.
The Perseids seem to have a long pre-peak activity, I usually see 5-10 an hour from suburban skies the last three nights before the peak, and maybe 12-20 per hour on the night closest to the peak hour. But they taper off rapidly after the peak.
Under suburban skies, you'll only see the brightests ones. A limiting magnitude of 4 will change that 100ph number to about 25ph. The lower the radiant is in your sky, the worse off you will be. The more obstructions (tall buildings, trees) the less you will see.
Don't expect to see much before midnight, regardless of the peak during your local time, you want the "leading edge" of the Earth entering the "stream" which won't happen till halfway between sunset and sunrise.

Can you watch a METEOR SHOWER before its peak day?
This year the famous Geminids Meteor shower will peak on Dec14. The thing is that its on a Monday. I dont exactly have the time to stay up late on Sunday or Monday night. I was planning to watch this Meteor shower on Dec12 or late that night with my bf. So I was wondering if I can watch it like a day or two before the peak day of a Meteor shower but still will have a pretty night sky?
Answer: Yes, Meteor showers can occur days prior and days after they hit their peak.

How can I view a METEOR SHOWER without leaving the city?
I want to see the Perseid Meteor shower on August 12th early in the morning, but I dont think my dad will be willing to drive out of the city. So can I still see the Meteor shower, I live in Sterling Heights, its actually not that bright.
Answer: DON'T use a telescope. Do get out of the city if you can. Drive NE, towards the constellations that the Perseids meteors come from. Otherwise, if you drive south for example, the glow from the city will dominate the northern sky, which is where you are trying to observe meteorites. If you can see all the stars of the little dipper, you will see meteorites. See below for where and when to look in the sky on August 12 (about 15 degrees left of the moonrise)...

How could the METEOR SHOWER last night have come from different directions?
I went out side to watch the Geminid Meteor shower and to my suprise, they were coming from different directions and angles.
Answer: If they were all members of the same shower then they could appear anywhere in the sky and appear to be going in random directions at first. However if you traced them backward you would find that their 'point of origin' was all the same (in the constellation of Gemini for this shower) and they would radiate out away from that point in all directions.
You could always have a few strays in the mix, but all the Geminids originate in the constellation of Gemini, hence the name of the shower.
