What were CAB CALLOWAYs greatest hits, and how high did they reach on the charts?
Answer: Cabell Calloway was born in Rochester, New York on December 25, 1907, and died on November 18, 1994. Best known for his "hi-de-ho" scat singing, he gained fame at the Cotton Club in NYC during the 1930s. He fronted a popular jazz band that at times included tenor saxists Ben Webster and Chu Berry, trumpet stars Dizzy Gillespie and Jonah Jones, and drummer Cozy Cole. Featured in productions of "Porgy and Bess" and "Hello, Dolly!," he appeared in many movies, including "The Blues Brothers." His signature song was the 1931 hit "Minnie the Moocher." I only know three of his hits for certain:
(1) Minnie the Moocher - debut 1931
(2) Blues in the Night (My Mama Done Tol' Me) - Peak #8, 1 week on chart, debut 3/14/42
Cab calloway & the Palmer Brothers (vocals), Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); from the film "Blues in the Night" starring Priscilla Lane
(3) The Moment I Laid Eyes on You - Peak #24, 1 week on chart, debut 11/11/44
Cab calloway (vocal); Juke Box #24

What is the best version of CAB CALLOWAYs Minnie the Moocher?
Answer: I don't think theres a bad version! But my personal favourite is the performance he did for The Blues Brothers movie. He grooves hard man- energetic and great fun, especially since he was in his 80's!
Musicaly, his voice sounds amazing and the backup band is absolutely top notch. The band they used for the whole movie comprised of some of the best muscians of the time- Donald 'duck' Dunn on bass, Lou Marini on sax and Matt Murphey on guitar are all legends.
There is also the fact that this is the best quality recording of him performing it which makes a big difference when compared to his very early recording which is very muffled and old school sounding.
Cab was a legend! His voice got better and better with age.
