The Triumph of Film in 2011?
Entertainment Weekly released their thoughts on what/who should be put up for certain Academy Awards. I just wanted to hear a bunch of strangers on the Internets thoughts on who or what should
be put up for certain awards out of their choices.
Best Picture: The Artist, War Horse, The Help, The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, Hugo*, or The Tree of Life?
Best Actor: George Clooney, Michael Fassbender*, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, or Jean Dujardin?
Any outside choices?
Best Actress: Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Tilda Swinton*, Michelle Williams, or Meryl Streep? Outside Choices?
Best Supporting Actor: Kenneth Branagh, Albert Brooks, Jonah Hill, Christopher Plummer*, or Max Von Sydow? Outside Choices?
Best Supporting Actress: Jessica Chastain, Janet McTeer, Octavia spencer, Melissa McCarthy*, or Berenice Bejo? Outside Choices?
Best Director: Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Alexander Payne*, Terrence Malick, Michel Hazanavicius? Outside Choices?
Opinions and Suggestions Please!
Answer: Best Picture: Wanna say Hugo but I think The Decendants will win. If Moneyball was included I would've said it.
Best Actor: I wanna say Leonardo DiCaprio but I think it's gonna be between Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Think Brad will win.
Best Actress: Meryl Streep.
Best Supporting Actor: Jonah Hill.
Best Supporting Actress: Melissa McCarthy.
Best Director: Martin Scorsese or Steven Spielberg. It's a tie. Can't decide.

Who will win best picture, actor, actress, and supporting roles?
I think "The Help" should win best picture because it was a heartwarming story with exceptional acting and very well written for the screen.
I think Brad Pitt should win best actor, his performance in Money Ball was one of the best Ive seen in a while.
Viola Davis from "The Help" should win best actress because she played her character with much realism, humility, and intensity, that you almost would think the she was actually Aibileen, the character she plays.
Not too sure about the best supporting actor because Ive only seen Jonah Hills performance which was surprisingly good in "Money Ball"
Octavia spencer from "The Help" should win best supporting actress because she did an excellent job playing a feisty and attention-grabbing Minny Jackson.
Well those are my picks, and I know there is a lot of hype around "The Artist" which I actually plan on seeing later today, but my choice is with "The Help" for best picture. I"ve seen Moneyball, Warhorse, Midnight In Paris, The Tree of Life, but I have not seen Hugo, The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, or The Artist yet. Still its going to be "The Help" for me, and the hype around "The Artist" reminds me of the hype around "The Kings Speech" which was an overrated movie, so "The Artist" is probably another overrated movie.
So what are your picks? And why?

Is anyone else annoyed with the latest Oscar nominations?
Hi, Im a teenage guy who really enjoys to watch movies, and after seeing the latest nominees for the oscars, I became a little angry. Primarily with the best picture category. Even though Ive seen only two out of the nine, which is Midnight in Paris and The Help, I have heard most of them are very good, but I havent seen them. First Id like to point out some odd entries in the list. These include "The Help", and of course, "EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE". "The Help" received fairly well reviews, and I personally enjoyed it, but I thought it was very cliched and those types of movies that it seems like were meant for crying in. Personally, I did not think it was oscar-worthy (for best picture). On a side note, however, it did have some great performances, and Im glad Viola Davis and newcomer Octavia spencer were nominated. And now to the biggest surprise, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". Now I did not see this, but when a movie receives a "rotten" rating on rottentomatoes.com (for those of you that dont know this website, it is a critic aggregator, and rates it as either "fresh", meaning it has more positive reviews than negative, or "rotten", more negative), I dont think it should be nominated for the Oscar. Thats just one and the only argument I need to say that this movie does not deserve its spot in the best picture category.
Anyways, I think many movies were left out in this list. And the biggest of them all, in my opinion, are "Drive" and "50/50".
I think both of these movies were exceptional. Drive was like a modern day "Taxi Driver", which was actually nominated for best picture. I havent been so impressed with a movie in a long time until I saw "Drive". Im not go any longer because I could talk about its symbolism forever. The least the Academy could do, however, was nominate Albert Brooks for his spectacular performance as mobster and villain of the story, "Bernie Rose". Also the soundtrack was fantastic, giving off a great 80s vibe, fused with modern electronic (not nominated).
I was so disappointed when I saw that 50/50 wasnt nominated for anything at all. I mean, I understand that the Oscars arent very fond of comedies, but this movie was different. For fucks sake, even though it wasnt laugh out loud, hilarious, it made a funny movie out of cancer. How many directors can do that, and manage to turn into a highly praised film? When movies have to do with cancer, or any disease stricken people, you expect several cliches, and common story lines. However, "50/50" manages to not do this, and still deliver the same message. It moves away from them, and becomes a much more realistic take on what it is really like. It was overall, a beautiful movie, and deserves at least a nomination for best picture.
I know I wrote a lot, but Im just really aggravated when such great movies arent met with the recognition they deserve. I hope you agree with me. Thanks!
Answer: I totally agree with you. Extremely Annoying and Incredibly Tedious is nothing more than an Oscar bait film, and the only reason it was nominated is probably 'cos they got bribes. They don't appreciate comedies at all and it sucks when the better films are snubbed when the jury wants to be biased. Pity Troll Hunter wasn't in Foreign film either, that was awesome! But hey, here in Britain Drive did get many nods for the BAFTAs, so that's something to be calm about!

What did you think of the movie The Help?
I was expecting it to be one of those white savoir movies, but surprisingly it wasnt. The acting was strong although Viola Davis was no where near as great as I was expecting since the outroar after Meryl Streep won the Golden Globe (but I havent seen The Iron Lady so I cant judge), but she was still great. Jessica Chastain and Octavia spencer as well. I think the way it handed the racial themes were great, but it does kind of go over them a little stereotypically (is that the right word?) this one scene where Octavia spencers character is teacher Jessica Chastain how to cook fried chicken and shes like "fried chicken makes you feel better about the world." and I was just like right... you have to have this big black maid talk about her love for fried chicken, lol. But yeah, it was excellent, 9/10. I wish I had seen it in theaters to be honest.
So what did you guys think of the movie?
BQ: What do you think of Jessica Chastain? I havent seen anything she was in from 2011 other than The Help but shes been getting a lot of accolades.
BQ2: Any movie recommendations?
I like character driven movies...
I will check out The Artist. Thanks.
I really need to learn proper grammar...
Answer: You make some excellent points about The Help, and I agree with most answerers as well--it really did gloss over the issues of racial inequality in America during that period. That being said, it was still a safe film about the cruelty and vile truth of racism (but hey, not all white people are bad), it felt more a movie about reassurance than giving us the searing truth. I was really drawn into the characters though and quite moved, even though it felt like I was kinda made to feel a certain way about it, like a 'feel-good' story.
I felt the movie could've been better if Skeeter wasn't always just feeling bad about the maids and listening to the way they got treated without even an ounce of racism in her, she could've even unintentionally stereotyped so she can recognize her own received ideas about race, so the viewers don't feel like "oh here's a pat on the back, congratulate yourselves on how far you've come".
Then again, if syrupy inspiring movies about African-American lives weren't being made, would a different, more enduring kind get made in their place? I highly doubt it. Considering the pop-culture era we live in with idiotic movies that pretty blatantly market at women are being made (think: Eat, Pray, Love). I feel, well ok it stereotypes, simplifies and reduces the civil rights movement. But at least the story is being told.
BQ: I love, love, love Jessica Chastain at the moment. Her and Tom Brady--great things will come from these two. She's apparently "the muse of Al Pacino" he saw her on Broadway or something and told her to do films. You should watch her other movies, like The Debt with Helen Mirren, Coriolanus with Ralph Fiennes, Take Shelter, or Tree of Life.
BQ2: Suicidal's movie recommendation-list is excellent! I'd check all of those out if I were you, they're all 10/10. Since you mentioned you like character driven movies I suggest:
1) The Machinist
2) Amelie
3) The Diving Bell and Butterfly
I'm sure you've seen the obvious ones like There Will Be Blood, Kill Bill...Also! a movie I watched that's nominated for the 2012 Oscars that I recommend is The Descendants, I was genuinely surprised by how good the movie was, worth a watch!

role of a maid or is it just another validation of seeing black people in subservient roles?
Could you play the role of a maid or manservant? For those of you who have seen the movie what did you think of her role? the movie?
@ Mark...but there are now and have been for sometime..what about Madame CJWalker who revolutionized black hair and became the first black, female millionaress....not take away from the actress or the story but this just seems to be typical as if all we have done is be maids with white saviors to tell our story...like the Blind Side.
@ Pharoah...no, I have not seen it as my feelings are explained in the above...I want to see other stories about black folks who have done extraordinary things....we have been other things besides slaves, maids, and nannies.
@ Mira...I thought Denzel won for Training Day playing a corrupt cop? Still degrading..he should have won for Malcolm X.
@ Baxter you may have a point ...and they wont have to worry about offering good stories and roles to black people b/c she got this...but this is just a rehashing of the angry, but subservient black person who is noble and intelligent but cant escape their circumstances...a line in it says that she has come from 2 generations of maid and that her grandfather was a slave...there are other stories during that time but this one always seems so beloved by American theatre goers.
