If you lost a ship in the MARIANA TRENCH, how long would it take to sink to the bottom?
I am just wondering that, since the Mariana trench is the deepest part of the earth (over 30,000ft), how long would it take for an averaged size ship to sink to the sea-bed?
Also how long would it take for a diver to decend to the bottom to find a ship etc?
Answer: It depends on the negative buoyancy factor and how much air is trapped in the hull. Could be hours.

How long would it take if you fell into the MARIANA TRENCH?
I found this topic to be interesting. the trench is over 7 miles down, and say it was drained out or something, and a 160 pound person fell into it. if you do the math right, you could proably get the right calculation. Whats your estimate? I think it would take about 7 minutes to hit the bottom depending on the persons weight, because the heavier you are the faster gravity pulls you.
Answer: The speed of a body falling freely in the Earth's gravitational influence is: sqrt(2gh)
g->gravity
h->weigh in kilograms
160 pounds = 72.5747792 kilograms
g=9.8 m/s^2
SOOO.... 7 miles = 11265.408 meters
SOOO....
==>37.56594 mph
=> 11.18033989 minutes before you hit the ground :S
I don't know if I'm entirely accurate....

Try this on a globe sometime, or Google Earth: Looking head-on at the planet, spin it until Hawaii is a little north and east of center. The MARIANA TRENCH is located in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 11 000 m below the surface of the water?
The Mariana trench is located in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 11 000 m below the surface of the water. The density of seawater is 1025 kg/m3. (a) If an underwater vehicle were to explore such a depth, what force would the water exert on the vehicles observation window (radius = 0.118 m)?
Answer: 11 000 m * 1025 kg/m3 * 9.81 = 110607kN/m2
area of window is 0.0437 m2
force is 4838kN

what does the MARIANA TRENCH have to do with tectonic plates?
Please explain thoroughly and also explain what the Mariana trench is too! :D
Answer: The Mariana trench is the deepest part of the world's oceans. It is located in the western Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Mariana Islands. The trench is about 2,550 kilometres
The Mariana trench is part of the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc geological boundary system that forms the boundary between two tectonic plates. In this system, the western edge of one plate, the Pacific Plate, is subducted beneath the smaller Mariana Plate that lies to the west. Because the Pacific plate is the largest of all the tectonic plates on Earth, crustal material at its western edge has had a long time since formation (up to 170 million years) to compact and become very dense; hence its great height-difference relative to the higher-riding Mariana Plate, at the point where the Pacific Plate crust is subducted. This deep area is the Mariana trench proper. The movement of these plates is also indirectly responsible for the formation of the Mariana Islands (which are caused by volcanism as a result of subduction of water trapped in minerals).
At the bottom of the trench, where the plates meet, the water column above exerts a pressure of 1,086 bars (15,750 psi), over one thousand times the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level.

Why hasnt anyone decended to the bottom of the MARIANA TRENCH in the last 46 years?
Since 1960 no human has been to the deepest known point in our oceans. Why is this? Is it that it is too expensive or maybe lack of interest?
Answer: You're WAY misinformed, dude. Scientists from the University of Texas at Dallas and their academic partners in Japan have been diving to the bottom of the Marianas Trench off and on for years! Typically, they use the DSRV Alvin and have made many dives there. I am sure that there are others who have also been conducting research there; though not an "every day event", it's not that uncommon.
You need to research this a bit more thoroughly. The Alvin gets "rented out" (by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute) to scientists from all over the world and every year many, many DEEP dives are conducted to deep sea rifts and trenches all over the planet.

How do animals in the MARIANA TRENCH/deep waters adapt to thier living conditions?
also if you can help with what animals are in the Mariana trench? just have a list for me?

Answer: I forget the terms right now, but it has to do with organisms living off of silicon (i think) coming out of thermal springs in the ocean floor, because there isn't any photosynthesis taking place at that depth. Also, the organisms are silicon based, not carbon based like every other living thing in the world.
Sorry, I haven't studied this stuff in years.

Why are earthquakes at the southern end of MARIANA TRENCH weak and shallow?
While earthquakes on the northern tip seem to be weak/shallow near the subduction zone and get stronger and deeper the further west you travel.
Is this because the descending angle is far greater at the southern end? Or because the force of subduction is far less at the bottom of the arc compared to that exerted along the length of the arc?
Answer: That's an interesting question, I don't really know too much about the Mariana trench. Maybe you could research which plates are involved? Are we dealing with ocean-continental or continental-continental? Post the answer once you find out I'd be interested to see the answer

how did the MARIANA TRENCH form?
how did the Mariana trench form?
also when did it form?
Answer: Sometimes a piece of the ocean floor (called a plate) will form a crack, and one side of the crack will sink beneath the other side. As the sinking side falls into the Earth’s mantle below, it pulls the rest of its plate with it. The ocean floor deepens along this crack. The sinking sea floor grinds against the other side of the crack and tears pieces off to be carried down into the Earth. The overall result is a long, deep trench that marks the location of the initial crack. We call such features subduction zones or oceanic trenches. This process is how the Mariana trench formed.
