Associated with solar coronal mass ejections (CME), coronal holes, or solar flares, a geomagnetic storm is caused by a solar wind shock wave which typically strikes the Earth's magnetic field 3 days after the event. This only happens if the shock wave travels in a direction toward Earth. The solar wind pressure on the magnetosphere will increase or decrease depending on the Sun's activity. These solar wind pressure changes modify the electric currents in the ionosphere. Magnetic storms usually last 24 to 48 hours, but some may last for many days. I want to know if I build a faraday cage into my home, can it prevent a massive electromagnetic shut down of my personal electronic equipment in the event of a massive Solar storm? Can it be a possible answer to transformers to keep them from blowing by grounding small cages to them?
Answer: A Faraday cage will shield your home from a lot of electromagnetic radiation, but at the shorter wavelengths where you have to start treating light as particles, its effectiveness drops off rapidly. For the gamma radiation that would accompany a MASSIVE Solar storm you need the equivalent of 7 inches (18 cm) of solid lead. 9 inches (22.5 cm) of solid copper or 29.5 inches (74.5 cm) of solid aluminum would work, also. It's cheaper to use 7 feet (2.1 m) of concrete. The occurrence of a Solar storm massive enough to ruin your (unshielded) computer would be an event in which your computer would be the least of your worries. You, yourself, are a far larger target than the IC's in your computer, which, incidently, has a Faraday shield already, although your monitor does not.

Answer: These are two of the many claims cooked up by a bunch of crackpots for the year 2012. A sudden rotational pole shift is a physical impossibility. Think of the energy of the rotating Earth. It has slowed down by one thousandth of a second per day in 200 years. How is it going to suddenly stop and rotate the other way? The energy needed is the same as for tipping it upside down because the end result is effectively the same. It's pure nonsense. Solar storms happen all the time and are no threat to life on Earth.

How can we hear a SOLAR STORM when sound cannot travel in a vacuum?

I was watching the discovery channel two weeks ago, and they had a clip of what a Solar storm sounds like. Im confused. I know sound cant travel in the vacuum of space and dont understand how they were able to record this sound. Is this really just radio waves being emitted and converted into sound, or is the sound wave moving with whatever matter is being hurled out of the sun and reaching earth. No wait, matter doesnt reach earth from the sun, only photons do, right? Okay, someone really needs to explain?
Answer: We can't hear the storm itself (also because it consists of charged subatomic particles, which we can't hear even when there IS air), but we can hear it's effects on a radio. A Solar storm COULD cause interference in radio system, and we CAN hear that -- hissing, crackling, popping all the result of radio interference -- IF you know what kind of radio to use, and what frequency to turn it to. In fact, some people can SEE the Solar storm! The Solar storm causes the Northern Lights (and Southern Lights), and if you live in the right pats of the world, you can SEE the northern lights, which are caused by the Solar storm. And yes , matter DOES come from the sun. That is what a Solar storm IS. But the "matter" that arrives here consists of mostly electrons, with some free protons and some hydrogen and helium nuclei. it is SUBATOMIC, but it IS still MATTER. How will the upcoming SOLAR STORM affect the Earth?

NASA warns about a Solar storm, and I dont really understand how the Solar storm is going to affect the world.
Answer: You're getting some bad information. Solar storms happen literally A-L-L the time. NASA is not "warning" about them. If you are old enough to be typing on a computer then you have lived through hundreds if not thousands of Solar storms in your lifetime. The hype is due to ignorance. 2013 will be a period of solar maximum. Meaning that there will just be more Solar storms than normal, perhaps 1 per day. However the Sun enters one of these periods every 11 years. Even during a VERY slow time of solar activity you can expect a Solar storm every week or every other week. These Solar storms only affect electronics. The absolute worse case scenario is that some sattelites and/or electic power grids get overloaded and fried during a particularly bad storm. However, as soon as the damaged electronics are replaced the problem is over. Typically Solar storms only result in poor cable TV reception, dropped cell phone calls, etc.

I heard that there is going to be a Solar storm in 2012 and that it is going to be the biggest one in history and that it could take out our electricity and it could take years to fix. Is that true?
Answer: All current studies of the sun's 11-year solar cycle indicates that the next maximum (in 2013, by the way) will be average or below-average in intensity. The last max was in 2001 - no one except astronomers noticed anything. Having said that, they can't predict a Solar storm even a DAY in advance, no way they could possibly predict what will happen with the sun over a year from now. And a Solar storm does NOT necessarily mean it will destroy all our power systems - the Earth's magnetic field protects the Earth (has done for over 4 billion years) from solar electromagnetic activity. A severe storm could damage satellites and could cause some overloading of the power grid - IF a coronal mass ejection was launched in our direction AND had the opposite polarity of our magnetic field.

However, there's no evidence that any of the ones in the future will be any worse than the ones in the past, all of which we've survived. At the moment we're experiencing the lowest level of solar activity in _centuries_.

How to protect hard disks, flash usb disks, computers hardware and so on under an EMP or an epic SOLAR STORM?

Answer: Didn't check the above answer. Most of these technologies involve copper-screen shielding called a "Faraday Cage." Google this term for lots of answers. Basically, anything that will protect against the magnetic field of an MRI machine will do what you need (and on a massive scale.) EMP's have a duration in the low nanosecond range, which is what makes them such a threat to semi-conductors. Any method that can protect against EMP should easily be adequate for solar events, too. Antistatic bags are not likely to be useful (IMO) but I don't know of any tests conducted with them. I may be wrong about that.

Answer: First, there is no such thing as "as Solar storm that is supposed to hit us in 2013". At present, the best we can do is one week in advance. There are Solar storms all the time on the Sun. NONE of them can reach us. Ever. What they can do is trigger a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and these happen all the time. Since they can be ejected in any direction, most of them miss us. Some do "hit" us (many per year) and one did about a month ago. Most of the time, they cause very beautiful Northern Lights (and southern lights if you live south of the equator). Sometimes (very rarely), they can cause Earth's field to have what we call a Magnetic Reconnection Event, resulting in a geomagnetic storm. Rapid fluctuations of our magnetic field can induce currents in very long conductors. The last time this happened, computers that control the power distribution in the province of Quebec (in Canada) misinterpreted it as a major problem and they shut down the grid. Six million people went without power for nine hours. Total number of deaths = 0. Sometimes, the charged particles can penetrate computer chips and cause problems. In August 1989, the computers that run the Toronto Stock Exchange crashed and some people could not follow what was happening to their shares for almost a full day. Total number of deaths = 0. The one at the beginning of August 2010 caused... beautiful Northern Lights.

Answer: Worst case scenario I can think of is satellites get damaged and electrical equipment fails, power cuts and missed television programmes and maybe you miss some phone calls from your friends. This could be fatal for people on life support if the equipment aren't protected from power surges. This is not very likely to occur though. Most likely we'll just get some pretty northern and southern lights. You see now if there is a Solar storm we get enough warning for the power stations to shut down vulnerable grids so they don't melt.

Would a SOLAR STORM affect generators or batteries?

A severe Solar storm/flare has the potential to damage the National Grid, but what effects, if any, could it have on generators and car batteries?
Answer: The Solar storms that cause concern in operating the power grid is due to the long transmission lines traversing ground with different impedance along the route of the line. Thus the geomagnetic ground currents induced in the earth which result from a Solar storm, move from the earth onto the power grid. These currents are very low frequency between 0 and 4 cycles per second. These currents flow through the power companies transformers and may force them into magnetic saturation and cause voltage distortion and harmonics to show up on the grid. If the geomagnetic ground currents flow through the power company's generators, a similar set of problems will occur. If you are talking about a home generator that is isolated from the grid, then no this type of generator will not be affected simply because it does not span a long enough portion of the earth to be affected. As for batteries, it is not likely that any battery system would typically be hooked up in a configuration spanning a great enough distance to see these ground currents either. It would depend on how and what they were hooked up to. I hope this helps, Newton1Law
