How long, on average, does the VERNAL EQUINOX spend in each of the 12 zodiacal constellations?
The Vernal equinox is now in the constellation of Pisces. Wobbling of the Earths axis will eventually cause the Vernal equinox to move into Aquarius, beginning the legendary, long-awaited "Age of Aquarius". How long, on average, does the Vernal equinox spend in each of the 12 zodiacal constellations? Please include your thought process.
Answer: Vernal equinox (along with ts diametrically oppositely placed Autumnal Equinox) travels round the Zodiac ('Ecliptic') in 25,800 years to 26,000 years. I prefer the number 25920 as it is divisible by 36 to make matters convenient & easy. If you divide this number by 12 (number of Zodiac signs), it comes to 2160 (= 36 X 60) years in a sign. The movement, devoid of any ellipticities is fairly uniform with no possibility of more time in one sign or less in another. Computed from 500 AD (some claim it is 450 AD, when 'Aryabhatta' laid down the V.E.) in around 2600 AD, V.E. would clear 'Pisces' through which it is transiting now, to enter 'Aquarius' to usher in age of Aquarius, if all other things wouldn't spoil the show. The date of V.E. would be 14 February, if we consider the ratio of number of one full cycle by number of days in a year (72 years for V.E. shift for every day shift back, in V.E. or Spring Equinox) but mine is a very crude calculation.
The 'first point of Aries' was set in around 500 AD, that is still being observed by the traditional Indian almanac makers ('Panchanga karta' s). That date originally was to be 14 April (called 'first point of Aries' and hence 'New Year' in parts of India) happens now, on 21 March.
This is only an Astronomical event that does not in any way significant to Earthlings.
I am troubled by 'one' thing, though. In 1930 the constellations were divided into 88. I forgot the name of the Astronomer whose work it was. Their positions and boundaries were drawn, not like what 'Bayer' (in his 'Uranometria' did by lines joining points for stars), but along latitude & longitude (RA & Declination) lines - on the lines of states in USA- including Zodiacal constellations popularly called 'signs'. But at the end of the exercise, part of Zodiac was assigned to 'Ophiuchus' (from 'Scorpio'). Sun transits now 'Ophiuchus'. Perhaps, one can assign 'sign' of 'Ophiuchus' to those born in part of November. That makes it the thirteenth constellation of Zodiac! I think this historic violation should be corrected for posterity's sake. There should be proper representing the case to International Astronomical Union, for reconsideration.
Also, with "precession" the RA & Declination lines need to be redrawn every time (at intervals of 50 years that is called an 'epoch') and all the boundaries of constellations will be skewed at an angle with the the new 'Celestial Equator'. I am sure Astronomers would have found a way out of this constellation nomenclature mess.
That is on 14 April Sun still transits that spot which used to be V.E. In this way, 'Spring' will traverse through all the 12 months. In the year 13460 V.E. (onset of Spring) will fall on 23 September when the pole star will be 'Vega' or a spot nearby.

Calculate using Ptolemy’s methods, the length of a noon shadow of a pole of length 60 at the VERNAL EQUINOX at?
Calculate using Ptolemy’s methods, the length of a noon shadow of a pole of length 60 at the Vernal equinox at a place of latitude 40 degree.
Answer: At noon on the equinox the Sun will be vertically ahead at the Equator so the Sun's rays will make an angle of 40 degree with the pole. If s is the length of the shadow we shall have, therefore
s/60 = tan 40 so
s = 60 tan 40 = 50.346

18 hours ago ... Vernal equinox 2012 is March 20 -- when the sun is positioned directly over the equator of our tilted Earth.
Spring seem early? It is, the earliest since 1896
The Vernal equinox — the first day of spring — will arrive Tuesday (March 20) at 05:14 Universal Time, or 1:14 a.m. EDT. Even more intriguing is that for those in the Mountain and Pacific Time zones, the equinox will actually arrive Monday night (March 19).
Do the various pagan/earth religions observe the occurrence of the VERNAL EQUINOX in any way?
Given that its less than a month until the Vernal equinox, I happened to wonder if this date is observed or celebrated in any way by pagan/earth religions. Likewise, is there any observance of the autumnal equinox? Thanks!
Answer: Wicca celebrates 8 Sabbats. They are divided into two groups, the Quarters (which are solar in nature) and the Cross-Quarters. The Quarters are Yule and Litha (Winter and Summer solstice) and Mabon and Ostara (Equinoxes).
The particular myths associated with the Sabbats varies from tradition to tradition. In my particular tradition of Wicca, Ostara is the time when the new God quickens within the womb of the Goddess, analogous to the fast approaching Spring. Mabon is when the spirit of the slain God hangs low over the face of the Earth, preparing to move into the Otherwold at Samhain.

Why will the polestar and the location of the VERNAL EQUINOX on the celestial sphere be different thousands...?
Why will the polestar and the location of the Vernal equinox on the celestial sphere be different thousands of years from now, causing your star maps to finally go out of date?
Answer: It's called Precession. Most everyone knows that the Earth's axis is tilted 23.5 degrees but what many do not know is that our axis "wobbles" in a circle, like a gyroscope. It goes around once every 26,000 years. So in 12,000 years or so, our pole star will no longer be Polaris but Vega.

Perhaps you have a New Years Day of your own -- a day when it suddenly feels as though youve truly left the old year behind. It may be the day you no longer have to think twice when putting the date on a check, if you still write checks, that is. Or perhaps - Editorial welcomes the coming of the new year; argues that there is simply no telling what this year will bring, and that is the very thing that makes it so new. (S)

How do I draw a picture of VERNAL EQUINOX?
I need a way to draw a simple, easy picture of the Vernal equinox.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Also, how can I draw a picture of the Autumnal Equinox?
Answer: Draw two rings of same size (in profile they present as ellipses) pin-jointed at opposite ends of their common diameter. Designate the horizontal one as "Equator" and the tilted one as "Ecliptic", ensuring that the angle (or at least mark it) between them is 23°.45 . The point where the Ecliptic (tilted, non-horizontal) circle rises mark the jointed point as 'Vernal equinox' and its twin on the other side as 'Autumnal Equinox'. Give appropriate arrow directions on the ring to indicate Sun's (apparent as seen from Earth). For better effect mark the figures of Zodiac on the Ecliptic (Aries starts at VE & Libra starts at AE).

What is the Angle from the Pariapsis to the VERNAL EQUINOX?
im solving the time equation (high schooll... freshman :D)
a-M+(U with a / through it)
i got a and M but i cant find the angle from the pariapsis to the Vernal equinox... any help?
Answer: In general terms, the angle from the periapsis to the Vernal equinox consists of the sum of two angles, namely the argument of periapsis (the 'U' with a '/' through it) plus the longitude of the ascending node.
If you're talking about the planets, then the argument of periapsis (perihelion) and the longitude of the ascending node change quite slowly and can be looked up in a table. An example of such a table, together with notes on how to calculate planetary positions can be found at: http://www.stjarnhimlen.se/comp/ppcomp.html
The arguments of perihelion and longitudes of the ascending node are given for the start of the year 2000. In order to apply a correction to give the values for today's date, you need to note that the number of days (d) elapsed since then is 3,238.
The table gives orbital elements for the Sun, which may seem counter intuitive, but to obtain orbital elements for the earth, simply add or subtract 180 degrees. Thus the argument of perihelion of the Earth at the beginning of 2000 was 102.9404 degrees. In this case, the longitude of the ascending node is undefined, since the Earth's orbit is the reference plane. The argument of perihelion and its angle from the Vernal equinox are the same thing.

If you put an egg straight up on the Vernal equinox you can apparently get the egg to stand up straight. What time + day will that be this year?
Answer: The Vernal equinox was on the 20th March (UTC).
As regards the egg thing, I've rarely heard such nonsense.
The force of gravity is exactly the same irrespective of the time of year and doesn't suddenly undergo some transient anomaly at the equinoxes.
You can get an egg to stand on its end at any time of year, it is simply a matter of balance.
