Why does the Western Zodiac start with the Northern SPRING EQUINOX and not the Southern?
Seeing that the Western Zodiac is no longer aligned as it was 4 millennia ago, but only symbolically associated with the Twelve Constellations.

I know that, but Im talking technically, here.
After 24yrs of Astrological study - though Ive seen a lot of validity in it and a process that reveals the dynamics of human behaviourior - the question above puzzles me.
Answer: The astrologers are stuck in the past. It does not matter what and where the constellations are currently. They still pretend it's two thousand years ago in the Middle East for the signs. Astrologers stopped observing the sky for centuries.

SPRING EQUINOX?
since Spring forward time is two weeks earlier this year than usual will it mess with the Spring equinox ?
Answer: No -- the Spring equinox is determined by the amount of daylight, NOT the time it begins and ends.
"Far from being an arbitrary indicator of the changing seasons, March 20 (March 21 in some years) is significant for astronomical reasons. On March 20, 2007, at precisely 8:07 P.M. EDT (March 21, 00:07 Universal Time), the Sun will cross directly over the Earth's equator. This moment is known as the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. For the Southern Hemisphere, this is the moment of the autumnal equinox."

so, today (21/3/11) is the Spring equinox and there is the same amount of day as night. i was wondering how much does day(light) increases each day from now?
Answer: It depends on your latitude, but for 30 degrees North, the increase is about 1 and a half minutes a day. It is approximately 2 minutes a day at 40 degrees North. See the US Naval Obervatory website,

Is the SPRING EQUINOX a day long event of an instantaneous event?
Is the Spring equinox a day long event of an instantaneous event? Explain your reasoning.
Answer: The answer is the reasoning. At a single certain point, the earth reaches the point in orbit when the sun is directly over the equator as the equator is directly perpendicular to the plane of the orbit. Once that point is reached, the earth (seems) moves on around the orbit and the angles change. So the Equinox is a moment in time that we talk about all day. It is a moving fixed date and ranges from Mar 20 to Mar 23.

Why does our calendar system not start on the winter solstice or SPRING EQUINOX? Why January 1?
Does January 1 have our planet in a logical astronomical position to start the new year? Or was it just a random date to start a new year?
Answer: It's all because of history, not just the Earth's orbit. The ancient Romans started their year on the first of March. I guess that was because March 21st is about when the Spring equinox happens, so they wanted an excuse to celebrate that month.
In the year 47 BC, Julius Caesar changed the system, creating the Julian calendar. He decided to start the year on January 1st. That way, the winter solstice would be over, and the days would be getting longer.

When exactly does the Sun enter Aries and will this be the time of the SPRING EQUINOX too?
and what about the autumnal equinox? is it same time the sun enters the constellation of Libra always too? please explain.
Answer: The Indian Astronomer 'Aryabhata' whose work 'Aryabhatiyam' laid down that the Spring equinox (Meshadi = First point of Aries) marks the start of Spring. That was in 450 AD or thereabout. Most Indian traditional Calender makers still follow the date April 14. 'Geoff G', irrespective of where the Zodiacal signs (Constellations of the Ecliptic) were drawn now,has already stated that the Sun's entry into Aries is slated for April 18, not much different.
'Precession' of the earth's rotation axis takes the North Pole on a circle of 23.45 deg. radius centered at RA: 18hrs 0' 0"; Decl.: +66.55 deg. It takes the node of intersection of Ecliptic (Zodiac) and celestial Equator along the Ecliptic at the rate of 50" arc per annum; completing one cycle in approximately 25,920 years.
Now Vernal Equinox happens on 20 March, at 17:21 (Earlier it was thought to be on 21 March early hours) with Sun viewed against the constellation of Pisces, very near to its border with Aquarius. It amounts to a shift of 21d 31' 40" from the original first point of Aries. Hence, this date marks the point on Earth's orbit that is different from that of April 14th (or April 18th) when Sun enters the constellation of (traditional) Aries.

What are 3 reasons it doesnt look like we have 12 hours of light during SPRING EQUINOX?
Atleast, in the US. You see, the news paper will never say the Spring equinox on its real date because when it is actually the Spring equinox, it doesnt look like youre getting 12 hours of sunshine. It looks like this on a different date. I want to know three reasons why its not.
Answer: Are you saying there's less or more? Because tecnically there is more than 12 hours on the spring and fall equinoxes. The reason is the way light bends when it comes through our atmosphere - when the Sun looks like it's right on the horizon, it's actually slightly below the horizon.
Then there's the minor detail that it takes a couple minutes for the Sun to set - since the Sun is not a point but rather an extended object, there's a little bit of time between when the "bottom" of the Sun reaches the horizon (at sunset) and when the "top" of it finally goes below the horizon.
If it weren't for the bending of light rays by our atmosphere, and if the Sun were a point source instead of an extended source, then we would have exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness on the equinoxes.
Of course I also am assuming the Earth is perfectly spherical, without any hills or mountains along the horizon to make the Sun appear to set earlier.

What is the difference between SPRING EQUINOX and summer solstice?
Hello, I was studying the mechanism of seasons from a youtube video, and they were talking about the overhead sun in different times of the year, they started talking about the Spring equinox and then they started talking about the summer solstice, so my question is, why equinox and then solstice? what do they have to do? Pleaaasee help me, thanks a lot.
P.S: here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLRA87TKXLM
Answer: An equinox and a solstice are special dates in the year concerning the motion of the sun trough the sky. There are two of each: a summer and a winter solstice, and a spring and autumn equinox.
A solstice is the date when the tilt of the earths axis is directly towards or away from the sun. This means that on this date the sun will either be at it's highest or lowest point in the sky of that year. The length of the day will therefore be either the longest or shortest in the year.
The summer solstice corresponds to the highest point in the year (the axis is tilted towards the sun) and the winter solstice corresponds to the lowest point in the year (the axis is tilted away from the sun).
An equinox is the date when the tilt of earths axis neither away nor towards the sun. This means that on this date, the sun will be directly overhead at the equator.
There are two equinoxes, one in the spring and one in autumn.
In terms of seasons, the solstices represent the start of the summer or winter, and the equinoxes equivalently represent the start of spring or autumn. In some cultures, they represent the mid-point of these seasons.

I live in California
I remember doing it a long time ago when I was little, and I would love to be able to do it again.

Answer: 1) There's no connection between the equinox and standing an egg on end -- it's a myth.
2) In any case, you missed it. The equinox occurred last night, March 19, at 10:48 PM Pacific Daylight Time.
3) You can stand an egg on a level surface at any time as follows: Sprinkle some salt on the surface, and move the egg around until you find a location where it stands upright. Then blow the salt away. A single tiny salt crystal is strong enough to keep an egg upright, and this crystal will remain when you blow the others away.
