CRIME; A Piece of the Action
The big question left hanging at the end of THE CUT (Reagan Arthur/Little, Brown, $25.99), George Pelecanoss latest Washington, D.C., crime novel, is whether he can keep his cocky new hero from flaming out. Hours cut due to pregnancy, filed for unemployment and Employer lied during the phone interview: Help!?
I had disclosed my pregnancy December 14th and by Christmas they sat me down and told me I was a liability and could not continue doing some of the work my job entailed. Working 10 hours a week with rent, a car payment and a baby on the way, I filed for partial-unemployment. Today was my scheduled interview and the employer was on the phone with the Unemployment person and myself. She blatantly lied, saying I had asked for my hours to be cut, that theyd offered me material on my pregnancy and working in a Funeral Home setting (which she didnt at all), and that they had asked for a doctors note which I still havent given them. Now, I dont have insurance, so Id gone to a clinic to get proof of pregnancy, which I have, and to be able to apply for Medicaid. I applied for Medicaid on 1-7 and was scheduled for a doctors appointment on 1-29. The clinic told me they could not provide a note stipulating any restrictions, which is what job wanted. But the doctors appointment COULD provide a note if I have any restrictions.
The Unemployment woman was not very kind and I answered everything truthfully. After she hung up with my Boss she asked what work I was looking for in the mean time and told her "Anything and everything."
Im so upset. Its my money that pays into unemployment, all that happens to the employers is a slight raise in taxes. The wife is divorcing the husband (both owners) because hes been cheating on her. Ive been dealing with that drama since August. Their daughter had since "left" but still was receiving her full paycheck. And when they cut my hours and I apply for assistance while I look for something else, they all out LIE?!
I have a definite feeling Im going to be denied for my UI benefits. For extra information, I live in NJ, I worked there for going on 9 months, went from doing 25-30 hours and being in school to 10 hours a week if that. I was an intern at this funeral home, which entitles heavy lifting and working around formaldehyde (which is why they were saying I was a liability). If they deny me I do plan on appealing. But I dont understand why they would lie like that? Whats going to stop them from doing it again? Should I get a lawyer?
All I wanted was to be able to make ends meet while Ive been sending out my resume. Which theyve put me in such a lovely position to find a job that will hire a pregnant woman. Thankfully, I do have an interview on Tuesday, which Im hoping goes well.
Any information would be amazing. Thanks a lot.

Taking my kid from his mom/rant?
This is the first question Ive ever posted so Im not exactly where to start.
Well, we were married for a short 14 months because we got pregnant. It was an ugly relationship, and an ugly divorce. I was 19 and she was 21 I still love for her but it is a dead relationship so I try to keep her out and my son in. Of course I have to talk to her, shes my kids mom. We used to fight and bicker, but Ive grown tired of that and know it doesnt help my child, me, or his mom.
I now live with my parents, yes, my parents. It is humbling, but Im not a bum! It has been four years now (my kid is 3 and a half) I pay my child support, Ive got through 2 years of college (not stopping!), Never been late on child support, been talking him one week every month, buy 100% of his clothes, makes sure he is loved, Ive grown emotionally (I was a real jerk), and despite living back with parents I know Ive matured. Sorry about the run on sentence.
I wish I could say the same for her, shes always been stubborn, ill tempered, and irrational, as we both were. But that is just the tip of the ice burg. Since she was 16 she has been a heavy drinker. Th
When she has a really big problem, she tends to call me. Why? I have no idea. But it is usually really serious, I do it for my son, and sadly, because I love her.
Which brings me to my real concern. Her sister died a week ago (may she be well where ever she is). She told me the news and I felt terrible. She really needed me to take him. So I said I would. Now we live 2 and a half hours away from each other. I agreed to A) Pick him up at 9 am B) Take him to the funeral C) Watch him for the day D) Get a hotel room and keep him overnight. Keep in mind, I just paid child support and had to take work off! Damn makes get stressed just thinking about it. But my baby (son) needed me so I did what I had to.
However the real stress is when she called me a couple days later. She broke down and told me she had no one to talk to crying, yelling, swearing, asking for advice (what the hell am I suppose to say), and then, that she cant handle it because she is an alcoholic and cant numb the pain of her sister. Those icy words "Im an alcoholic" have been just haunting my mind and has been so hard to deal with. She went on saying how she just "drinks her self away".
Who is watching him? How is she supporting this habit? What does she do after her hang over? Is she drunk around him? GOD SO MANY QUESTIONS! My heart is breaking for my son.
Anyways I told her we need to talk about it. she said, "Well talk now". That was a day after the funeral.
So we discussed it. We were both upset, she was yelling, telling me that just because I have education and do what I like doesnt mean she isnt a good person. Why am I telling you this? Cause it was just as random in person!
Anyways, I told her look "Step up, or Step down". Then going into detail saying look he needs to be with his father. He has a great support system here, a more stable parent, and a higher quality of life. I was done arguing to her, I couldnt talk to her. I know this is a bias rant but I honestly cant get through to her. comments like "Since youve known me Ive drank and Ill be drinking until Im 70 years old!" and things like "That divorce didnt change me ONE BIT. Im still the same person." This makes me so hurt and depressed. I told her we need to do the best for our son. She is going to seriously think about it.
So on top of all this, I have to worry about the stress of very quite possibly taking my son full time. Dont get me wrong it is a blessing and I want him in my life, it is just so much to process in a short time. It is so hard, I need to get my son out of there. I dont want to take his mother out of his life but, he needs to be here.
It is more than alcohol now. It is her life style, the way she raises him. Her family is amazed that he minds his father. Hes with the baby sitter while she goes out to bars. How do I know? Long story short, the baby sitter told me. I brushed it off but after this I cant.
I know this is all over the place but I needed another outlet. Im at my rope and nearly in tears. Please give advice.
P.S. Oh and as we all know there are two sides of the story. She truly loves her son, she doesnt hurt him, from what Ive seen, I know she wants to be a good mom. She just cant get there.

Alright, I wrote this sad acoustic song. Hows the lyrics?
Alright, song is about a guy who just went to an x girlfriends funeral. After second chorus, it goes heavy guitar for ending
Verse 1
I rip a page out of the book laid open
I tare the page and push it away
I Look at the words left unspoken
And I crumble in my memorys shade
I feel that this wont be easy
I live in regret and my pain
The silence is always misleading
But never in the pooring rain
Chorus
It feels so cold tonight
The rain surrounds me
I cant even say your name
Your words were just make belief
Verse 2
Take whats mine, walk the streets
The people pass each with their load
My thoughts pass below my feet
Just adding cracks to the road
I thought it would all be perfect
An idea was all Id know
I pass the scene of your car wreck
And lower my head as I turn to go
(Chorus)
Final Chorus
(Yo way oh,)
Yo way oh, etc) echo
I wont see you again
I know where you will be
And I knew the truth
But you never knew me
alright, hope that goes well for you. Though I doubt this song would make you a lot of money. Good luck on guessing the melody and chords too

both were raised by their ant and uncle
both risk their lives constantly
both have a male and female friend
both have feelings for their female friend and dont know what to do about it
both have lost someone important to them
both fight evil constantly
both have had girlfriends that are redheads
both have broken up with those girlfriends because they thought theyd be in danger
both save the world from evil constantly
and finally
at the end of first spider man movie and in the Half Blood Prince both end at funeral with the main characters walking away with the heavy weight of the world on their shoulders

What do you think of my story so far?
Ohkay, so, for english, we have these free writes due on certain days and this time I decided to do a story. What do you think? :)
I take a deep breath and fish around in my pocket for the key; I was sure that I grabbed it before I left the house. I find it, kick open the door, and don’t even bother to look around the house. It’s empty, as usual. I run upstairs, throw my bag down and close my bedroom door. My phone vibrates from inside my bag, but I try and ignore the sound and push the thoughts from my head.
On my phone are the 23 messages that you left that night. The night that I yelled at you and told you I never wanted to talk to you again; the night you were in the accident. I lie down on my bed and turn my back to my bag.
What did that annoying counselor say again? That it’s not my fault? That I’m not responsible for the grief that the accident caused your family? Yeah, right. Of course this was my fault. If I had just answered my phone you wouldn’t have went out that night, on your way to apologize to my house and gotten hit by that driver.
I can hear the sound of a car pulling up in the driveway and I force myself to sit up. The front door opens, closes, and then there are footsteps coming up the stairs. I don’t feel like talking to anyone so I grab my bag and pull my window open. I toss my bag into the big oak tree that almost touches my window and step out carefully onto the thick branch.
I climb down the tree and inhale the crisp November air. The sun is beginning to go down and the cool breeze is becoming sharp. I make my way to the small diner downtown that we used to go to all the time when you were alive.
I open the door and the familiarity of the place pushes those thoughts out of my mind. The sound of the bell rings when the door opens and the smell of coffee and French fries fills my lungs. I go to my usual seat in the corner and look around. Around me are all sorts of people, none look familiar, but they’re all the same each time. There are the typical truck drivers come in for their cup of coffee so they can continue their drive into the next state. The college students with their heavy text books spread out, large cups of coffee and their eyes locked on their laptop screens.
I catch a whiff of perfume and don’t look up. I can already tell it’s the waitress.
“I’ll have, uh, a…” She cuts me off, her voice impatient, like I should be more observant.
“You don’t need to tell me, hun, I’ve got it right here. Your usual” She sets down a cup of coffee and a bagel with cream cheese on the side. “You order the same thing, every time, remember?”
I try to smile but it doesn’t feel right and give up.
“Uh, yeah, you’re right. Thanks.”
When I look up she’s already gone, so I spread some cream cheese on the bagel and take a bite. I stare out the window and watch the people outside walk by, laughing, and enjoying the sales before Thanksgiving.
I finish my coffee and like on cue the waitress hands me the bill. I leave some cash and step out into the cool air. Now I regret not grabbing a sweater.
I wonder if you’re cold too. When I last saw you they did your hair and makeup. If you saw yourself, you would have laughed at yourself because you looked like one of the Barbie clones that strolled down the school hallways. They only put you in a pretty, prom-looking dress, in a light blue color, your favorite. But it wasn’t how they dolled you up that disturbed me. It was the fact that I recognized the dress.
It was the same dress that you picked out the week before our fight; before you died. You twirled around in front of the department store mirror, and decided that yes, this was the one you would wear to the homecoming dance. You had a big smile on your face as you slid your dad’s credit card across the counter, not knowing that instead of homecoming, you’d be wearing that to dress your funeral.
And thats it for now...anything I should fix? Thanks! :)
Aww, thanks guys. This was my first time writing something :)
Ive always wanted to write a story but I thought it would come out stupid, lol.
But I was listening to this song and it really inspired me :)
Answer: Very intriguing! Left me wanting to read more! I can tell that you have a natural talent for writing.

Could you tell me the metaphor in this poem?
Please list al the metaphor in this poem.
Metaphors are comparisons that show how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way. Metaphors are a way to describe something. Authors use them to make their writing more interesting or entertaining.
Unlike similes that use the words “as” or “like” to make a comparison, metaphors state that something is something else.
The lady of shallot
On either side the river lie
Long fields of barley and of rye,
That clothe the wold and meet the sky;
And thro the field the road runs by
To many-towerd Camelot;
And up and down the people go,
Gazing where the lilies blow
Round an island there below,
The island of Shalott.
Willows whiten, aspens quiver,
Little breezes dusk and shiver
Through the wave that runs for ever
By the island in the river
Flowing down to Camelot.
Four grey walls, and four grey towers,
Overlook a space of flowers,
And the silent isle imbowers
The Lady of Shalott.
By the margin, willow veild,
Slide the heavy barges traild
By slow horses; and unhaild
The shallop flitteth silken-saild
Skimming down to Camelot:
But who hath seen her wave her hand?
Or at the casement seen her stand?
Or is she known in all the land,
The Lady of Shalott?
Only reapers, reaping early,
In among the bearded barley
Hear a song that echoes cheerly
From the river winding clearly;
Down to towerd Camelot;
And by the moon the reaper weary,
Piling sheaves in uplands airy,
Listening, whispers, " Tis the fairy
Lady of Shalott."
There she weaves by night and day
A magic web with colours gay.
She has heard a whisper say,
A curse is on her if she stay
To look down to Camelot.
She knows not what the curse may be,
And so she weaveth steadily,
And little other care hath she,
The Lady of Shalott.
And moving through a mirror clear
That hangs before her all the year,
Shadows of the world appear.
There she sees the highway near
Winding down to Camelot;
There the river eddy whirls,
And there the surly village churls,
And the red cloaks of market girls
Pass onward from Shalott.
Sometimes a troop of damsels glad,
An abbot on an ambling pad,
Sometimes a curly shepherd lad,
Or long-haird page in crimson clad
Goes by to towerd Camelot;
And sometimes through the mirror blue
The knights come riding two and two.
She hath no loyal Knight and true,
The Lady of Shalott.
But in her web she still delights
To weave the mirrors magic sights,
For often through the silent nights
A funeral, with plumes and lights
And music, went to Camelot;
Or when the Moon was overhead,
Came two young lovers lately wed.
"I am half sick of shadows," said
The Lady of Shalott.
A bow-shot from her bower-eaves,
He rode between the barley sheaves,
The sun came dazzling thro the leaves,
And flamed upon the brazen greaves
Of bold Sir Lancelot.
A red-cross knight for ever kneeld
To a lady in his shield,
That sparkled on the yellow field,
Beside remote Shalott.
The gemmy bridle glitterd free,
Like to some branch of stars we see
Hung in the golden Galaxy.
The bridle bells rang merrily
As he rode down to Camelot:
And from his blazond baldric slung
A mighty silver bugle hung,
And as he rode his armor rung
Beside remote Shalott.
All in the blue unclouded weather
Thick-jewelld shone the saddle-leather,
The helmet and the helmet-feather
Burnd like one burning flame together,
As he rode down to Camelot.
As often thro the purple night,
Below the starry clusters bright,
Some bearded meteor, burning bright,
Moves over still Shalott.
His broad clear brow in sunlight glowd;
On burnishd hooves his war-horse trode;
From underneath his helmet flowd
His coal-black curls as on he rode,
As he rode down to Camelot.
From the bank and from the river
He flashed into the crystal mirror,
"Tirra lirra," by the river
Sang Sir Lancelot.
She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces through the room,
She saw the water-lily bloom,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
She lookd down to Camelot.
Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crackd from side to side;
"The curse is come upon me," cried
The Lady of Shalott.
In the stormy east-wind straining,
The pale yellow woods were waning,
The broad stream in his banks complaining.
Heavily the low sky raining
Over towerd Camelot;
Down she came and found a boat
Beneath a willow left afloat,
And around about the prow she wrote
The Lady of Shalott.
And down the rivers dim expanse
Like some bold seer in a trance,
Seeing all his own mischance --
With a glassy countenance
Did she look to Camelot.
And at the closing of the day
She loosed the chain, and down she lay;
The broad stream bore her far away,
The Lady of Shalott.
Lying, robed in snowy white

Answer: Here is a start. (It's not reasonable or proper to ask the good people here to do your work for you.)
Stanza one depicts barley and rye that "clothe the world." This is a metaphor. Grain is not clothing. Instead it is being compared to clothing in the sense that it covers the thing in question.
To find the rest, look for anything that cannot be read literally, as in my example.
Best wishes!

(Jadakiss) Hahah (Sheek)

Uh huh, yeah

[Verse - Jadakiss]
Yo, Im just too much, I flow too sick
I be on top of the snare, all over the kick
Since a youngcat, I been one wit the drum tap
The purple start pushin my lungs back
Been there, done that
My words stick to you like thumb tacks
Pardon me, LOX hooked up wit Rodney
The Ferraris teal, but the trucks mahogany
Hating, I cant get you bastards off me
Fresh like I just took the plastic off me
Me and streets is high school sweethearts
And Im always in her so she cant divorce me
Cant see farther than Kiss, Im like a father to this
Want ya go and cop your father to this
I possess the whole package - the girls, the thongs
And theres something about me the world just loves
D-Block bringing hell of a pain, Honey tell em my name
[Chorus - Jadakiss & (Woman) (2x)]
(J-A-D-A) Im pulling it out, the gunsll pop
(J-A-D-A) Im taking your money, the funeral stop
(J-A-D-A) The clubll band, the beatll knock
(J-A-D-A) We just keep going, this **** dont stop
[Verse - Sheek Louch]
Sheek Louch get it popping, this **** dont stop
Got your boobs hitting, shaking in a Halter Top
Drizzling out, no shirt, burgandy drop
Chains bigger than Chuck D and Flavas clock
Yeah boy, Sheek kinda hot these days
Hold the heat when I spit, need ten ice trays
D-Block what up? whats ******* wit that?
Got the Camp spitting heavy on this Jerkins track
Glock jerk him back, either that or the mac
I prefer chrome but take it if you got it in black
Thick shorty wanna hop on it
I tell her not here, but we could go inside the bathroom Honey
Let me give it to your straight, I aint spending no money
We could drink till we pass out, make dicks and all that
Im a gangster, I bet shorty crawl back
Got her job through a two way contact
[Chorus - Sheek Louch & (Woman) (2x)]

On either side the river lie, fields of barley and of rye. That clothe the wold and meet the sky?

On either side the river lie
Long fields of barley and of rye,
That clothe the wold and meet the sky;
And through the field the road runs by
To many-towerd Camelot;
And up and down the people go,
Gazing where the lilies blow
Round an island there below,
The island of Shalott.
Willows whiten, aspens quiver,
Little breezes dusk and shiver
Through the wave that runs for ever
By the island in the river
Flowing down to Camelot.
Four grey walls, and four grey towers,
Overlook a space of flowers,
And the silent isle imbowers
The Lady of Shalott.
By the margin, willow veild,
Slide the heavy barges traild
By slow horses; and unhaild
The shallop flitteth silken-saild
Skimming down to Camelot:
But who hath seen her wave her hand?
Or at the casement seen her stand?
Or is she known in all the land,
The Lady of Shalott?
Only reapers, reaping early,
In among the beared barley
Hear a song that echoes cheerly
From the river winding clearly;
Down to towerd Camelot;
And by the moon the reaper weary,
Piling sheaves in uplands airy,
Listening, whispers, “ Tis the fairy
Lady of Shalott.”
Back to top
Part II
There she weaves by night and day
A magic web with colours gay.
She has heard a whisper say,
A curse is on her if she stay
To look down to Camelot.
She knows not what the curse may be,
And so she weaveth steadily,
And little other care hath she,
The Lady of Shalott.
And moving through a mirror clear
That hangs before her all the year,
Shadows of the world appear.
There she sees the highway near
Winding down to Camelot;
And sometimes through the mirror blue
The knights come riding two and two.
She hath no loyal knight and true,
The Lady of Shalott.
Sometimes a troop of damsels glad,
An abbot on an ambling pad,
Sometimes a curly shepherd lad,
Or long-haird page in crimson clad
Goes by to towerd Camelot;
And sometimes through the mirror blue
The knights come riding two and two.
She hath no loyal Knight and true,
The Lady of Shalott.
But in her web she still delights
To weave the mirrors magic sights,
For often through the silent nights
A funeral, with plumes and lights
And music, went to Camelot;
Or when the moon was overhead,
Came two young lovers lately wed.
“I am half sick of shadows,” said
The Lady of Shalott.
Back to top
Part III
A bow-shot from her bower-eaves,
He rode between the barley sheaves,
The sun came dazzling thro the leaves,
And flamed upon the brazen greaves
Of bold Sir Lancelot.
A red-cross knight for ever kneeld
To a lady in his shield,
That sparkled on the yellow field,
Beside remote Shalott.
The gemmy bridle glitterd free,
Like to some branch of stars we see
Hung in the golden Galaxy.
The bridle bells rang merrily
As he rode down to Camelot:
And from his blazond baldric slung
A mighty silver bugle hung,
And as he rode his armor rung
Beside remote Shalott.
All in the blue unclouded weather
Thick-jewelld shone the saddle-leather,
The helmet and the helmet-feather
Burnd like one burning flame together,
As he rode down to Camelot.
As often thro the purple night,
Below the starry clusters bright,
Some bearded meteor, burning bright,
Moves over still Shalott.
His broad clear brow in sunlight glowd;
On burnishd hooves his war-horse trode;
From underneath his helmet flowd
His coal-black curls as on he rode,
As he rode down to Camelot.
From the bank and from the river
He flashed into the crystal mirror,
“Tirra lirra,” by the river
Sang Sir Lancelot.
She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces through the room,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
She lookd down to Camelot.
Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crackd from side to side;
“The curse is come upon me,” cried
The Lady of Shalott.
Back to top
Part IV
In the stormy east-wind straining,
The pale yellow woods were waning,
The broad stream in his banks complaining.
Heavily the low sky raining
Over towerd Camelot;
Down she came and found a boat
Beneath a willow left afloat,
And round about the prow she wrote
The Lady of Shalott.
And down the rivers dim expanse
Like some bold seer in a trance,
Seeing all his own mischance -
With a glassy countenance
Did she look to Camelot.
And at the closing of the day
She loosed the chain, and down she lay;
The broad stream bore her far away,
The Lady of Shalott.
Lying, robed in snowy white
That loosely flew to left and right -
The leaves upon her falling light -
Thro the noises of the night,
She floated down to Camelot:
And as the boat-head woun

Anyone have info on this mammoth of a lamp?
I bought this lamp from a thrift store for 6 bucks because it was cool looking and really heavy. It appears to be made of brass and or bronze. It weighs around 25 pounds and stands about 3 feet tall. It is really damn heavy and Id say a bit manlier of a lamps lol. If any lamps are really manly. I cannot seem to find a makers mark anywhere on the damn thing besides "Leviton" and Made in theusa as well as wattage on the piece that holds the bulb.. the lamp look older than the electrical wiring so Im not so sure this is an accurate mark. so if anyone knows where I could find more info about a lamp like this or may know something then great. Also the lamp resembles a huge funeral urn. It is hollow somewhat in the bottom but rest of the lamp is basically solid metal.
So I googled "Leviton brass lamp" and the image results are all bulb sockets. This leads me to believe I was right in my thinking the marks on the socket are no help.
Did that too Echion but no luck finding anything on my lamp yet. You are right though Leviton did produce lamps also as well as the sockets yet I still believe that the socket may have been switched based on the aging.
Well I didnt send an email with pix yet.. maybe I will post it on an antique forum as Im not getting many answers.

Answer: 1 - Listen to Loreena McKennitt sing this, it's on YouTube. Close your eyes. The images that come to mind when she sings will clue you in on where the imagery is in the poem.
2 - Use Wikipedia, look up similie and metaphor. They aren't that hard to find but you need to understand what they are. Just having someone circle them for you on your homework isn't going to help you. You'll just become dependent on other people to fill your mind with thoughts.
3 - Google "king arthur" and read about the legend and myth, to better understand the motivations behind the Lady of Shalott. That will help you understand how the character and narrator are personified in the poem. Good luck. I know Yahoo Answers can be helpful for homework, and you'll get a mix of people spoon feeding you answers, and people calling you names. So I'm trying to show you how to fish vs. giving you a fish. That's a metaphor ;)
