Answer: There are a lot of variables here. First, there are combat, and non combat flights. In the non combat flights, the safety record would be comparable to airplanes today. Throughout 1943, combat over enemy held territories took a great toll on the Air Force (Army Air Force then.) By 1945, even the combat missions saw few losses as the enemy's ability to get planes in the sky had been greatly reduced. The point is, there is no way to determine the chance of a Plane crash in WW II. There were all types of planes for all types of purposes - cargo, recon, air attack, ground attack, bomber. But all were good (except maybe for the handling characteristics of the B-26.) and well built, and were dependable. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time and being out numbered was part of war and combat, but the planes were good.

What caused the Emmerdale PLANE CRASH, i dont remember a reason for the PLANE CRASHing being determined?

Remember the Plane crash in Emmerdale in 1993. I swear there was never a reason announced as to why the Plane crashed. And there were no other dead bodies, other than the villagers who perished. A plane usually carries hundreds of passengers. Does anyone know a reason about these things?
Answer: Mxsmanic is of course correct. That said I will indulge you because this is such an obscure reference that I remember from my past back when I could only dream about being an airline pilot. Allthough no great fan of emmerdale I remember this episode well. With a couple of notable exceptions I generally found it very boring, only watched because I lived with my folks at the time and my mom loved it. I remember the episode to which you refer as being very controversial at the time because of the similarities with the real life Pan Am 103 terrorist attack and subsequent crash into Lockerbie Scotland. To answer your questions no reason was given for the crash because it would not have fit with the storyline as in real life such determinations can take months even years. There was an illusion to the fact that because the airplane was from an eastern bloc country they may never find the reason. Again none of this was real! It was made clear that all on board perished along with some on the ground. No bodies were shown. The reaction of the locals who when looking for survivors came across the deceased from the crash was enough.

Answer: Jet engines have to be certified by the FAA before they are allowed into revenue service. Part of the testing requirement for this certification is bird ingestion. The videos reference by "Lover" are probably from an FAA required test. An engine must be able to withstand a large bird strike or several smaller bird strikes. Birds strikes do happen during commercial service and the planes survive. If enough birds hit enough engines on a plane in the wrong place (primary gas path) they could bring a plane down, but statistics show that this is very unlikely.

Answer: As a trained accident investigator the county coroner or medical examiner is the only government official that should release names. I have been to accident sites where the news media has reported the wrong person on the evening news, because they wanted to scoop the other station. I often am the first responder on scene and we are trained to secure the area to keep people out because people tend to walk on critical components. And often times people will take a piece of the wreckage home as a souvenir. Not only is this against federal law, but it may be the piece needed to sort out what happened. The FAA and NTSB who are charged with accident investigation will not release the names until the coroner or medical examiner has notified next of kin. Just because someone name is on a list does not mean they were on a certain flight or onboard at all.

Answer: I'm answering this from experience. When I was in the military, a U. S. jet fighter crashed into an apartment complex and killed over 80. I had to help with the clean-up efforts. First, it is beyond words what I felt. It was a very solemn and quiet task. Body parts are placed in bags and labeled. In some cases there may not be any parts found except for bone fragments. Initially the fire from the jet fuel can be so hot that it can burn bodies to the point of total destruction, but not evaporation. In some cases, when one touches charred skin it peels off. As in 9-11, some remains mainly bone chips aren't found for years later and they can be scattered over a wide area.

Answer: Well, count all the moving parts on an airplane, if an important part fails then you can have a crash. Here's a fine scenario! I saw it on a documentary once (it happened before). A jumbo jet had a jet attached to the rudder of the aircraft and it was very poorly maintained. So a crack developed in one of the parts of the turbine in it. So the aircraft started up, flew through the air and the stress became too great for the cracked part so it exploded and sent shrapnel through the aircraft's hull. Here's where it gets really bad. One of the shards cuts open a hydraulic fluid line, so the aircraft quickly ran out of hydraulic fluid. If a plane runs out of hydraulic fluid it can no longer control it's steering, ascending or descending by any conventional means. So it could very easily fall out of the sky and crash and the crew wouldn't be able to do a thing about it.

If the jet is crashing at 100 miles an hour, he is also heading 100 miles an hour toward the ground. When he jumps and pushes away from the plane at 5 miles an hour, he is now going 100-5 or 95 miles per hour toward the ground. Plus he is now on his own - hits the ground with skin and skull and no seat-belt and plane walls. But that's not all, gravity will slow him down too. Lucky the 95 miles per hour he is traveling wont give it much time to take effect, but if jumping from a certain distance, gravity will pull on his -5 miles per hour, and turn it back to +5 miles per hour (height he jumped up = height he falls down) so gravity equals it out and he would hit at 100 miles per hour anyway. This same illogical theory does not even work in a slower, free falling elevator.

Kind of a morbid question but Ive been watching a lot of Plane crash videos from seconds to disaster and found some of them quite interesting to listen to.
Answer: My personal favorite is the United 232 flight. The reason is the absolutely incredible/unbelievable job the pilots did in figuring out how to control a completely uncontrollable airplane. I knows a little morbid, but Im just wondering. When there is a plane accident and hundreds of people perish, are the airlines responsible to pay for something? Funeral expenses, loss wages for families, do the families receive free counseling? Because if someone is to harm someone else or take their life they face jail time and penalties. I know plane accidents are completely different. But as I was reading about the Plane crash in Africa today, I couldnt help but wonder what happens to the families? Are the airlines at all responsible for anything?

When Pan Am lost the flight over Lockerbie, Scotland, the insurance companies were reluctant to pay, since the "accident" was in reality not an accident at all, but was the result of a bomb. However, after much finagling, wheedling, and cajoling they were forced to pay off. The families are ultimately responsible for the burial, counseling and other expenses, but they usually file lawsuits and receive some compensation from the insurance carriers. It is just like any other accident; insurance companies pay the costs. The same applies to boating accidents and sinkings, train crashes, bus accidents and, of course, auto accidents.

Some of my Navy Reserve associates were killed in the crash. The aircraft flew low over Arlington Cemetary, crossed VA Route 27 and impacted the building approximately mid-way between Corridors 4 and 5. Among the spaces destroyed was the Navy Command Center where my associates were working. If you hate America, fine. WASHINGTON -- Late on a moonless night last March, a plane smuggling nearly half a ton of cocaine touched down at a remote airstrip in Honduras. A heavily armed ground crew was waiting for it -- as were Honduran security forces. After a 20-minute firefight, a Honduran officer was wounded and two drug traffickers lay dead. Several news outlets - United States Drug Enforcement Administration has been quietly deploying commando-style squads of military-trained special agents to Western Hemisphere nations, including Haiti and Honduras, that are battling drug cartels; Foreign-deployed Advisory Support Team program, or FAST, was created during the George W Bush administration to investigate Taliban-linked drug traffickers in Afghanistan, but has expanded far beyond the war zone under Pres Obama, reflecting the growing reach of the US in combating drug cartels.
