Why cant Regis Philbin help his son?
Daniel Philbin, son of Live! host Regis, lives just a few miles from me. I wasnt aware of this until the local paper published an article last fall that briefly outlined Daniels current quest for stable employment.
FYI, Daniel was born with a birth defect that left him with a spine lacking several vertebrae and his legs underdeveloped. His legs were later amputated. He had a job in the offices of the Defense Dept for awhile before leaving. I dont recall what circumstances caused him to leave.
Since that time, he has worked some odd jobs, including making crafts with his wife to sell at the street fair, but has basically been struggling to survive. The newspaper article detailed his experience when he went for an interview at a local radio station. The station had no means to get him and his wheelchair in their building. I dont know if the station was later cited for failure under the Americans with Disabilities Act, but Daniel was naturally unable to work there regardless.
Daniels wife has been financially stressed and has asked Regis for monetary assistance for the family. Daniel hasnt asked directly, possibly for issues of pride. Daniel was raised with the assistance of the Angel View Foundation, he went to state colleges (not Notre Dame like his father), and he has lived his life in a wheelchair. His ambition has been to work in media/journalism, the same field his father has flourished in.
Regis has made an embarrassingly rich living by hosting a silly morning show. He comes across as a very personable and compassionate man. So why cant this man do something to help his son succeed? How can Regis live such a jolly, lavish life while his son tries to sell hand-decorated light-switch plates to put food in his mouth? This doesnt make sense.
Yes, its for real. Im sure a google search would turn up info to confirm it.
Daniel is in his early 40s. When Regis career had taken off, Daniel was still a young child. At least Angel View Foundation was around to help raise Daniel.
Daniel had a birth defect and has never had legs to stand on. Its not like hes been a philandering drunk or junkie whos used dads dough for filthy habits. I dont see why the remark was made about "bailing him out every time." The tough love analogy makes no sense in these circumstances. Heck, wouldnt it be nice if Regis did something to show that he even CARED?
No more responses?
Either people THINK this is a joke, or I posted in the wrong subcategory.
Or Regis just isnt that popular these days?
Answer: This happens a lot, but it is not always best for a dad to rescue a grown son. Even one with a handicap. My son is deaf, and in order for him to make it in the world, he will have to be strong. Although I do believe there are times when I would offer help, it is much harder to have tough love and let your grown kid make it himself.
It only paralyzes a mans will to succeed when their mommy or daddy bails them out every time. What do you think the men did back then? they made it on their own.
My dad raised 17 kids with never any help from anyone. He never missed a day of work even when he was sick.
Maybe his son doesn't want the pity, I am sure he is capable of getting a job, like you said their are safety rules out there to protect the handicap from being discriminated against.

Is there anyone who actually thinks the Marriage Ref is funny?
I tried watching this last year during the first "season" and it was unwatchably bad. The show was not funny, the supposed "conflict" between spouses was either contrived or greatly exaggerated (as all "conflict" situations on reality shows), and the celebrity panelists were generally boring and uninsightful (e.g. just because Madonna has had a great recording career does not make her 1. witty 2. insightful on marriage conflicts). There is a complete disconnect on every level: the conflict is simply not so significant that it merits any discussion. Its "haha" to talk about the husband leaving the toilet seat up, but to extend that into a running 30 minute gag is really inane. Then to bring in celebrities (why?) to discuss this sham conflict is just confusing and pointless. Why do I care if the monosyllabic idiot Tracey Morgan thinks that pony tails on a woman are her prerogative??
The show is so bad that I honestly think even the celebrity panelists AND contestants (as this year they have added "prize" money) are embarrassed to be there. Regis Philbin, on tonights show, looked about as embarassed for being on this complete and pointless dud as he was for being a panelist with Tracey Morgan, who basically had nothing witty to say and acted as his general childlike self (side note: why is this guy considered funny? He has nothing interesting to say, and I think most people are more apt to laugh at this guy than with him. The most appropriate word for him is annoying.).
Is there anyone out there who finds this show funny? In fact, let me just make it simpler: is there anyone out there who finds this show watchable?
I was cringing most of the time watching the show tonight because I felt bad for everyone involved. Not one funny moment- not one.
Jerry Seinfeld was funny on Seinfeld but I think this show proves once and for all that Seinfeld was really an ensemble effort and we have far too long ignored that fact.
I think NBC green lighted a second season of this stinker in the hopes of luring Jerry into another sitcom, frankly. There is no rational reason why this show should have been picked up for a second season otherwise. Its just awful.
Answer: Some of it is funny you just have to really get use to it and really listen to there jokes....
