Does anyone here see the possibility of the Islanders and the NBA Nets sharing the arena going up in Brooklyn?
The thought occurred to me today that if The Lighthouse Project fails to materialize, the possibility exists where Charles Wang at least approaches Mikhail prokhorov about a shared arena deal or some arrangement that keeps the Islanders in the New York area.
Has there been any talk of that in and around the Big Apple?
What are your opinions of such an arrangement?
Answer: The issue with that is the current plans for the arena in Brooklyn do not incorporate an ice surface underneath. Don't know what it will cost to change plans, increased construction costs, etc. as I'm not an architect. Obviously, if the financing can be worked out, it would be a good alternate. The teams once shared The Coliseum way back when.
Plus the arena in Brooklyn is facing the same opposition as The Lighthouse, as it will incorporate more than a dozen residential and office towers with more than 6,400 apartments built over property that includes a rail yard, warehouses and several blocks of homes and businesses.
And after yesterday's 12 hour zoning hearing in the Town of Hempstead, which was purposely scheduled by the town the same day the Isles played in KC, things didn't go well for Uncle Charlie. Town board is stonewalling every chance they get. The fact that only 9,800 +/- fans showed up in KC last night really hurt one of Wang's bargaining chips. I guess fans in KC are tired of being used as pawns by other teams looking for better arena deals. Plus, Tavares didn't play as he was saved for the home fans in tonight's game vs. Devils. ToH is counting on Wang folding on his Oct. 3 deadline for an answer or he will start looking at alternatives.
Isles lease is up in 5 years. Could be time to start reserving those U-Hauls.

Hes the owner. He might be onto something in proposing a name change. Its nothing new, as theres been discussion of this since their possible move to Brooklyn. As he phrased it, startquote:
• "Let me ask you some questions," .. "What about the name of the team? Is it okay, the Nets? Or do we have to try to find something new?" endquote.
Just a partial quote from a Yahoo Sports article, but theres a lot to be said in a name. Even Michael Jordan, majority owner of his Charlotte Bobcats is rumored to want to change his teams name, as the old owner supposedly named it after his first name Bob.
Back to New Joisey ...what do fans think of this? Will they (owner and fans) go forward with this in a diplomatic fashion? Have a citywide/areawide vote online much like the Seattle Seahawks did back when they upgraded their NFL teams image?

♦ New Jersey JERSEYS. Silly, yea, but its a start and "Jerseys" goes with the whole clothing theme that the New York "Knicks" (knickerbockers aka baggy pants) have!
♦ New Jersey Juggernauts. Sounds unstoppable, but maybe too long in syllables given sports names that are 3 syllables or more invariable get shortened to two syllables or less. eg: Nationals to Nats, Diamond Backs to D-Backs, Cardinals to Cards. So this could be Juggernauts to Juggs!
♦ New Jersey Vodka. A nod to the Russian owner but silly yea. Heck the first team sponsored by Absolut Vodka!
♦ New Jersey Mob. A nod to their gangster past. Short too.
OKAY, AS A QUESTION HOPE THIS DOES NOT OFFEND DIEHARD NETS FANS, JUST CURIOUS WHAT OTHERS HAVE AS AN NEW NAME. Afterall, if Prokhorov wants to change it he will. Peace.

Russias richest man has reached a deal to buy the New Jersey Nets - one of Americas elite basketball franchises.
Mikhail prokhorov would become the first foreign NBA team owner if the deal - thought to be worth more than $200m (£124m) - goes through.
The 44-year-old billionaire wants to acquire 80% of the club and 45% of the clubs new arena in Brooklyn, promising big investments.
The proposed deal has been welcomed by leading basketball officials in the US.
Answer: I guarantee that this will not go through. Bruce Ratner who owns the nets, is not looking to sell off such a large chunk of the team. He's moving a $280 million dollar team to NY, which is an extremely more profitable market. Rapper Jay Z owns 1.7% of the franchise and has been rumored to be in talks with purchasing a majority share or a 50-50 type of deal with Ratner. Also, the league has to approve all investors that purchase shares of franchises. I'm not a Jay-Z superfan, but I would be less suprised to see Jay-Z buy the team outright, than Prokhorov get his hands on it. The team is moving to Brooklyn, NY (Jay-Z's hometown). Having the rapper on your board is another merchandising incentive. Could also turn into a Lebron James NY deal. Expecially if the cav's don't get a title this year.

Very true, the reason he went with the Nets is because he felt he had more flexibility with them.
Answer: Hes pretty great man.
He picked a great big man in the draft(Favors) who im guessing isn't going to be all that bad for the Nets.
Favors is agressive, and can grab boards for the Nets. I say the Nets will not go 12-70 next season. I think if Favors has an OUTSTANDING season, they can fight for the 8th spot.
That will be great, meaning they will be better the year after that most likely because of another draft accustation. Also, the Nets tried after LeBron, but I think he had already thought his decision out before "The Decision".
Plus, if they pull off a mid-season trade they can get a couple more wins depending on how good the possible trade is.
BQ- Hard, but I probably would not want him(not because i don't think hes good, because hes actually pretty good) but its because the Celtics(My favorite team), hav Danny Ainge whos is an awesome owner. He got us Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen and then changed a close to 20 win season to a championship next year. He also played for the Celtics, so he has heart for them.
