I made Split pea soup a few weeks ago and put it in the freezer. I am heating some up for lunch, and it tastes fine, but it tastes very boring. I made it without meat (I dont like ham). Is there anything I can add to zest it up? I cooked in quite a bit of garlic and a bit more salt, and it still tastes like it is missing something? Any suggestions?
Answer: I put smoked ham in mine, or you could add a bit of curry powder. I always start pea soup with an onion and a carrot too.

Answer: Five hours is way too long for Split pea soup. They don't have to cook for a long time like beans, because they are split and the inside is exposed.
Three hundred degrees will make any liquid boil. Turn down the temperature to less than 212-degrees F.

does anyone know what I can do to prevent my SPLIT PEA SOUP from separating?
Whenever I make Split pea soup the water ends up separating from the cooked and pureed peas.
Answer: It is common for that to happen whether your using yellow/green split peas, it is the fact the liquid is lighter than the solids hence the sinking like the Titanic of the solids, you can as one person said add a simple roux, I add a bit of oil or fat, a small amount of flour and a touch of cornstarch and at the end I stir it in, this slurry will tighten up the soup, make it more shelf stable and keep it for separating completely, it happens no matter what, also if you remove 1/3 to 1/2 and puree then add it back like the one person said, you may escape the separating, I add a few diced potato's in the beginning to to keep this from happening at times.

Do you have a spicy SPLIT PEA SOUP recipe you would suggest?
Something without a smoked soup bone I would hope. Those taste awful to me. I am trying to eat more healthy, and vegetable soups seemed like a good thing to add to my diet. Split peas were high in fiber, so I thought that would be double-good, but I dont like most Split pea soups. I thought maybe something very spicy would be a good place to start.

Answer: You could do them up with a spicy lentil recipe (African) I don't always have all of the spices but use what you have and it'll be yummy:
Recipe By: adapted from Bryanna Clark Grogan–Fiber for Life Cookbook, page 121
Serving Size: 8
1 cup dried lentils
1 cup minced onions
2 cloves garlic — minced
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes — to 1 teaspoon
pinch ground cardamom
pinch ginger
pinch ground cloves
pinch allspice
pinch coriander
pinch nutmeg
pinch fenugreek seed — optional
28 ounces canned tomatoes — diced, drained
1 cup vegetable broth
1/4 cup tomato paste
1 cup frozen peas
salt — to taste
Rinse the lentils, cover them generously with water in a medium pot, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for about 45 minutes, adding more water if necessary. Don’t let them get mushy.
Meanwhile, in a non-stick pan, sauté the onions and garlic over medium heat until soft. Add the spices and sauté another minute.
Add the tomatoes, broth, and tomato paste and simmer 15 minutes.
Add the peas and taste for salt. Simmer for 10 minutes more.
Serve over brown rice.

Answer: Yes, you can add water. In fact, you'll probably have to. For some reason, pea soup just gets thicker and thicker. If you're reheating from a frozen block, put a bit of water in the pan first, add the frozen block, cover and heat gradually. Stir often (always with pea soup!) and add water as needed.
Sometimes i use potatoes, sometimes I don't. I prefer it without potatoes, but it depends on my mood. Potatoes actually make it a bit less "heavy"

Last Tuesday (6 days ago) I made a large pot of Split pea soup with sauteed onions carrots and celery, organic vegetable broth, and assorted spices. Now, my roommate (who encouraged and helped finance) the idea, has been eating nothing but cheeseburgers all week and I need to do something with the remaining half-gallon-or-so of this soup in my fridge before tomorrow. Best Ever Split Pea
Really sticks to your ribs, really tasty, high fiber. Can be made vegan by substituting vegetable broth for chicken broth. Very easy.
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cups chopped onion
2 cups chopped carrot
2 cups finely chopped celery
1/2 tablespoon minced garlic
1 cup yellow split peas
1 cup green split peas
8 cups fat-free chicken broth
1 1/2 teaspoons salt-free seasoning blend
1 teaspoon salt
In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, heat olive oil. Cook onion, carrot, celery & garlic until onion is translucent. Stir in yellow & green split peas, broth, seasoning & salt.
Cover, bring to a boil, then reduce heat & simmer 2 1/2 hours, stirring frequently. Puree with a blender or food processor. Return to pot, heat through, & serve.

Does anyone know a good SPLIT PEA SOUP recipe?
Im looking for a Split pea soup recipe that has ham in it.
Answer: Split pea soup
1 ham bone
4 oz sliced ham - diced
1/2 onion - diced
1 carrot - diced
1 stalk celery - diced
1 bay leaf
Black pepper to taste
water
Place the ham bone in a big pot. Add 1 pkg dried split peas. Add the bay leaf and black pepper. Cover with water by 2". Saute the onion, carrot and celery in a skillet until the onion is translucent. Add that to the pot. Bring to a boil, turn down the heat to a gently bubble. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally until the soup thickens. If too thick, add a little more water. If too thin, cook longer. Remove bone and take meat off bone, dice, and add back to the pot. Add the slice of diced ham to the pot. Cook until the ham is hot. Remove bay leaf and serve.
I like to take the large piece of fat from the whole ham and boil it in water for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Then remove and toss the fat pieces, refrigerate the broth, and remove the layer of fat from the top when it's cold. I use that broth for my pea soup. There is a fair amount of salt in the fat so no salt is needed in the soup.

Do you have a great recipe for SPLIT PEA SOUP (or any soup, or any recipe!) using ham?
This might sound odd, but I was recently given a very nice large slice of ham as a gift (!) by a friend who is friends with an organic butcher. Its big--Id say about 12 ounces or so, though the weight isnt marked on the package. I thought I could use about half in a soup, either split pea or lentil...? But the recipes that I have use bacon, not ham.
And what do I do with the other half? Please, I dont want a link, I want your personal tried-and-true recipe(s). Thanks!!

In a large saucepan, saute the carrots, celery and onion in butter until tender. Stir in the remaining ingredients; cook for 15 minutes or until heated through. Discard bay leaf before serving.

As for the rest, you can put a slice in a pan and cover with scalloped potatoes and bake in the oven until the potatoes are done. We had that a lot when we were kids.
Ham & Scalloped potatoes
1 ham steak
5 peeled potatoes, sliced thin
1 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter
Put them ham on the bottom of a glass baking dish, cover with potatoes and pour on milk and butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes or until potatoes are tender. You can add cheese to this, too.

Can you make SPLIT PEA SOUP with WHOLE dried peas?
My mom bought me the ingredients, and now im noticing that while the soup smells and tastes good, there are the "skins" of the peas that are coming off, which I dont remember noticing in Split pea soup. Is this gonna turn out ok? any suggestions?

I don't know what kind of Split pea soup sweetroll has had, but split peas are just that, dried split green peas not lentils.
Lentils are a whole different type of legume and make a very different tasting soup then green Split pea soup. [Oh, there are also dried yellow split peas, but that's another story].
You used whole peas, like frozen or canned peas? If so, then you need to strain off the skins while it cooks down to a thick consistency, and it should taste just fine.
If a few skins are left behind, don't worry, they don't bite. lol!

Is there a way to make SPLIT PEA SOUP in a slow cooker/crockpot?
This is my first time making pea soup. i know there is a way, but i dont know how. Do i put it on high for the first few hours then down to low for the ret of the day or cook it on low all day or what? And i am just using a small ham cubed in tiny pieces, when do i put that in? Thanks in advance for your help.
Answer: I would start it on high and stir occasionally. Then when the split peas start getting mushy you can turn it down to medium or low. As long as you have the proper ingredients there's really no way you can screw up Split pea soup in a crockpot. I put the ham in right away. As it stews it gives it more flavor. A bit of cumin and a few dashes of liquid smoke also give it a good flavor.
