Does anyone have the TWO FAT LADIES Bread Sauce recipe?
I was told that Jennifer Patersons bread sauce is the best. I believe it is in the Cooking with the Two fat ladies cook book. I would like to serve it with my Thanksgiving turkey.
Answer: 4 oz (110 g) freshly made white breadcrumbs (a two-day-old white loaf with crusts removed will be hard enough to grate, but the best way to make the crumbs is in a liquidiser, if you have one)
1 large onion
15-18 whole cloves or freshly grated nutmeg
1 bay leaf
8 black peppercorns
1 pint (570 ml) breakfast milk
2 oz (50 g) butter
2 tablespoons double cream
salt and freshly milled black pepper
Cut the onion in half and stick the cloves in it – how many you use is a personal matter; I happen to like a pronounced flavour of clove. If you don't like them at all, you can use some freshly grated nutmeg instead. Place the onion – studded with cloves – plus the bay leaf and the peppercorns, in a saucepan together with the milk. Add some salt then bring everything up to boiling point. Take off the heat, cover the pan and leave in a warm place for the milk to infuse for two hours or more. When you're ready to make the sauce, remove the onion, bay leaf and peppercorns and keep them on one side. Stir the breadcrumbs into the milk and add 1 oz (25 g) of the butter. Leave the saucepan on a very low heat, stirring now and then, until the crumbs have swollen and thickened the sauce – about 15 minutes. Now replace the clove-studded onion, the bay leaf and the peppercorns and again leave the pan in a warm place until the sauce is needed. Just before serving, remove the onion and spices. Reheat gently then beat in the remaining butter and the cream and taste to check the seasoning. Pour into a warm serving jug.

We just got the DVDs and the Two fat ladies cookbook. Those two British women who opened each episode of their cooking show on a motorcycle with a side car were a hoot.
Answer: Aficionados might be interested to know the surviving Fat Lady (Clarissa Dickson Wright) recently made another series on Victorian cooking. She and antiques expert (Tim Winacott) went round various grand country houses visited by Princess/Queen Victoria and whilst he commented on the house and treasures, Clarissa was 'downstairs' with a cookery historian, preparing dishes 'set before the Queen'.
Fascinating stuff. These Royal Banquets usually comprised a dozen or more courses and HRH Vic seems to have been a right Miss Piggy, especially when it came to puddings.
Little wonder she too became a Fat Lady.

Im trying to find a copy of the entire Two fat ladies show (BBC, 1997-99 or thereabouts). Did they ever release the above series on tape or dvd? I know they did the first series. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

1 lg Spanish onion; thinly sliced
3 tb Flour
1 1/2 pt Milk
1 Bay leaf
4 ts Anchovy essence
1 lg Bunch parsley, chopped
6 Scallops
8 oz Fresh peeled cooked prawns
4 oz Parmesan; freshly grated
Instructions:
Put the coley and haddock into a large pan and pour boiling water over just to cover. Simmer very gently for 10 minutes. Turn it all out into a clean
sink and leave until the fish is cool enough to handle. Then remove skin and any bones. Flake the fish onto a plate and reserve.
Wash the spinach thoroughly and place in a saucepan--do not add any water.
Cook gently until it collapses, then raise the heat and cook until done, about 3 minutes. Drain well, pressing the liquid out. Return the spinach to
the saucepan with 2 ounces butter and season to taste with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Spread the spinach evenly on the bottom of a well-buttered oven dish large enough to take the rest of the ingredients.
Melt the remaining 2 ounces of butter in a saucepan and cook the onion gently until translucent. Add the flour and stir around to make a roux.
Have the milk heated to a simmer and add it little by little until you have a smooth bechamel sauce. Pop in the bay leaf and let it simmer for 1/2 hour, stirring occasionally.
Stir the anchovy essence and parsley into the sauce and season with salt and pepper. Mix in the flaked fish and pour onto the spinach. Slice the whites of the scallops in half horizontally and distribute over the fish,
interspersed with their corals. Scatter the prawns over the top, sprinkle with the Parmesan and dot with a little extra butter.
Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes, until heated through and browned
on the top. Serve with a puree of potato and a tomato salad.

Isnt about time that we abolished the Bingo call Two fat ladies for the numbers 88 ? Answer: Hi Spida, Thankyou!!!! Its about time someone stood up for us larger ladies. I am a big lady, okay, im greedy and i love my chips and burgers, but theres no need to mock me. My husband refuses to take me to his club as he says its a shame that i should have to hear such references to my size. I used to love a game of bingo, but as my George says, the bingo caller makes it shameful to be fat. He knows I feel picked on and encourages me to stay home to spare my feelings in public. So yes, ban these type of bingo calls, and ban the word fat. Large is quite a sufficient word.
