What do you think of AMY CHUAs way of parenting?
do you think some things she say are right/wrong. explain. 10 pt for best answer!!
Answer: She makes some interesting comparisons between Chinese and Western parenting which explain why so many Chinese children excel musically and academically. Although I appreciate musical and academic excellence, my fundamental view of the goals parenting is very different from Amy chua's goals.
While I believe there is merit in doing well in school, this is not a focus of my parenting perhaps because …
• Some of the people I respect the least are extremely intelligent and use their intelligence to belittle and take advantage of other people.
• Someone very close to me attempted suicide after being unable to live up to his parents’ expectations.
• Although my parents did not push me, I pushed myself and did extremely well in school. I learned to give the teachers exactly what they wanted which sometimes meant holding my differing opinions to myself. Ultimately my focus on grades slowed me down from developing my own voice.
For my own children and what I teach in Priceless Parenting ( http://www.pricelessparenting.com ) the goal is to raise children who have a heart and find a way to use their passions and talents to improve the world. While my children happen to do well in school, I’m most proud of them being selected to represent the 6th graders at their school as Humanitarians.
I want to have a loving relationship with my children for the rest of my life. It’s up to them to decide how well they want to do in school and musically. I’ll love them regardless!
Is there a dark side to the relentless emphasis on academic excellence practiced by mothers like Chua? This article, “Asian Americans' Rising Suicide Rates -- Three Students Take their Lives”, describes some of the downsides: http://news.newamericamedia.org/news/view_article.html?article_id=c2b8f3a43bbe3e0445f23274028d24a7

I need help reading "Tiger Mother" in English by AMY CHUA.?
Hi, I am an ESL student. I need help in understanding the sentence. I am reading "Tiger Mother" written by Amy chua.
Please explain me the meaning of the sentence on page 8, in the second paragraph, "(Jeds translation: She recognized the words "No Exit," could draw two overlapping circles, and okay maybe on the Chinese characters.)"
Thank you.
Answer: You have to read that in context, it is about the husband Jed, and the wife, Amy, and their different cultural influences on Sophia.
The passage includes the previous sentence, which gives you context and meaning:,
"By the time Sophia was three, she was reading Sartre, doing simple set theory, and could write one hundred Chinese characters. (Jed's translation: She recognized the words "No Exit," could draw two overlapping circles, and okay maybe on the Chinese characters.)"
The second part of that passage is a contradiction of the first!
Plus I think that is a typo in the book: it should probably say "okay maybe one of the Chinese characters" unless he meant she could draw ON a character.
The whole meaning is that the mother, Amy chua, is stating that her daughter had all of those accomplishments at age 3. But Amy's husband Jed contradicts it ("translates" Amy's statement) by saying "What Sophia could really do was ____." (a lot less than Amy is describing).

for those whove read the Battle Hymm of the Tiger Mother (by Amy chua). Amy chua talked about the experience with daughters. Think, whats the possible outcomes if the same method applied to sons?
Answer: It wouldn't make any difference. Boys and girls aren't different species. They're all kids. Not all boys are the same, and not all girls are the same. It makes a difference what the individual child is like (one of Amy chua's daughters reacted much better to her than the other, remember) but not what gender they are.

(I would love to hear from Chinese people;) I think F*ck that I already have enough issues with my mom; if she treated me like that I would lose it. I mean western way of disciplining is not perfect but I just think that is extreme.
Answer: I think she threw a bomb and created quite an explosion!
I think she'll make a fortune from her book, too.
You do realize her goal was to create a huge uproar and to get people upset--and her ultimate goal is to sell lots and lots of books.
Her approach is the diametric opposite of the absurd, over-coddling, helicoptering behavior of some (not all, just some) parents who make excuses for their adult children and will over-parent until they are in their graves!
There is a happy middle; unfortunately, it's not terribly popular nowadays. Parents feel like failures if they let kids fail, insist (or simply assume) that they take responsibility, not do their homework for them, not bail them out, not fight their battles, etc.
Notice how Ms. Chua is backtracking a bit, calling the work a memoir? That's because she knows that some of her methods are more than a bit abusive, psychologically speaking.
But you asked what I thought of the book--in brief, I think it's silly, it's an amusing discussion topic, it gets people apoplectic (her goal, I suspect), and I wouldn't spend good money on it!
