What is a EARTHQUAKE and how does it happen?
My little sister is doing a report on Earthquakes and I need to tell her what a Earthquake is in simple wrods for a 7 year old to understand. Please help!
Answer: The Earth is made up of a number of layers (including the core) that radiate outwards at different depths and sizes. The surface of the Earth is the layer called the crust, and the crust is divided into many segments called plates. These plates are constantly in motion, though they move so slowly that any significant change in the plates will only be noticed after thousands of years. Every now and then the movement of one plate over another builds up energy, and it is released at the point where the plates meet, called the fault line. This release of energy is the basis for an Earthquake. Energy can also be released in other ways, such as when a volcano erupts with enough force. Manmade explosions can also release enough energy to cause an Earthquake if they are strong enough. Whatever the catalyst is for a major release of energy in or against the Earth's crust, it is what triggers Earthquakes to occur.

EARTHQUAKE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
Okay i am very nervous right now. I was on my computer and then my whole room started to shake. It wasnt very strong but i felt it and saw my desk and dresser shaking and it was very scary. I didnt know what to do so I went under the doorway then to my brother. I Live in New Hampshire and it is snowing right now. My brother also felt it. We are very scared. Was that an Earthquake? We want to be on our guard cause in December we had a massive ice storm that left us without power for 12 days. Any comments?
Answer: The US Geologic Survey reports no significant Earthquakes in New England over the past week. Other possible causes for the shaking might include traffic, landslide/avalanche, etc.

what if an EARTHQUAKE with the same magnitude of Chilean EARTHQUAKE hit California?
I am curious how buildings in California would withstand the same Earthquake. The buildings here were built with stronger materials according to a building code, but the Northridge quake did some damage and knocked a layer of freeway down. The Northridge quake wasnt nearly as strong as Chiles.
The California state insurance program would like to collect $400.00 for an Earthquake insurance plan. They must be thinking something big right?
The California state insurance program would like to collect $400.00 for an Earthquake insurance plan. They must be thinking something big right?
Answer: It depends on the location of the quake. Chile's Earthquake is one of the largest on record, right up there in the top half dozen. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake was about a 7.8 and the worst of the damage was liquifaction of the soil -- it turned to something akin to jello during the event -- which broke water lines and collapsed buildings. Then the fire broke out and there was no way to stop the fire. Southern California could easily go up in flames as well, if gas lines break, power lines fall, and there is no water to fight fires. As for building codes, don't count on them saving your house, apartment, or life. There is more variance than the taxpayers are led to believe, and again, it depends on soil, time of day (rush hour versus night time).
Suggestion: put together a backpack or duffel bag for each family member, with a set of clothes, first aid kit, water bottles or packets, canned fruit and a few MRE's. Make a plan to call one person who lives "out of the immediate area/state", and make sure your family knows that number by heart. This is so that they can keep tabs on you and you aren't making a whole bunch of calls when your electricity is out and you can't charge your cell phone. When my husband and I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, we had put together three "Earthquake bags" (one in each car and a slightly larger one beside our bed) and we did this just one month before the Loma Prieta quake hit. We had piece of mind, at least a little, although we were right down the road from the Cypress Structure...and could hear the sirens and feel the aftershocks.

EARTHQUAKEs can occur anywhere in the world. Explain how an EARTHQUAKE develops and the regions where they occ?
Earthquakes can occur anywhere in the world. Explain how an Earthquake develops and the regions where they occur. Describe some of the effects of Earthquakes.
Answer: Earthquakes are the result of friction--most commonly between two tectonic plates sliding past, colliding with, or subducting (one sliding under the other) each other. Other times, it's the result of rocks/material being displaced as magma rises through the earth's crust. This is how Geologists and Volcanologists know when a volcano may erupt. The movement of the magma rising in the volcano causes small seismic Earthquakes that set off sensors set around the area.
Basically, an Earthquake is the result of a release of energy, or where friction was a factor, but suddenly the tension was released abruptly--this causes a shockwave, known as an Earthquake.
Earthquakes (viable for any tectonic boundary), trenches, volcanic arcs and melting are direct results of subduction, or one type of converging plate boundaries.
Some effects, or results of Earthquakes are landslides/mudslides, tsunamis, unnatural fires ignited due to electrical power or gas lines, soil liquefaction which leads to the sinking of buildings and destruction of roads/highways & bridges--all of which can lead to a catastrophic death toll. Also, contaminated groundwater from broken sewer lines, gas lines, or household contaminates would lead to disease and death. Monetary losses would also be at a high percentage.

EARTHQUAKE!?
OKay.
I have a worksheet on Earthquakes, but I dont know how to figure out the location of the Earthquake(s). The worksheet only gives the Latitude and the Longitude and Depth of the quake and the Region it is in( or was). It does not give North, East, South or West of the Earthquakes just that information above. My question is how do I go about finding the actual locations of the Earthquake, with out the N,E,S,and W, so I can plot it on the map? An expamle given for one of the Plots is LAT( -14.455 deg. ) LON(167.203 deg. ) DEPTH (187.2 km) REGION (Vanuatu). Another one is LAT(48.468 deg.) LON(-120.719 deg.) DEPTH (1.6 km) and REGION (Washington) and ect. The problems are basically like that.
Thanks

What should you do if an EARTHQUAKE and a tornado happened in the same place at the same time?
Via the best thing, I mean. This has never happened before in history but what should you do if a tornado were to hit and an Earthquake both in the same location simulataneously and you were upstairs full of windows to stay safe from the Earthquake but puts you in danger of the tornado storm that is also going on or if youre down basement, youre safe from the tornado but also put yourself in danger of the Earthquake. Please help! I dont want to have one of my internet friends killed because of this and Id do everything thats right to protect my friends.
Answer: Well first, you should never be upstairs in a house when a tornado watch/warning is given out. Also, an Earthquake would destroy the basement, so you need to get under a sturdy table in the center on the ground floor. The house collapsing in the Earthquake would simulate a tornado passing by, and if a tornado went by, debris would be sucked up and blown away from you.
The next thing is that Earthquake zones are pretty far away from tornadoes, and buildings in Earthquake zones are often built strong to withstand very large Earthquakes. Being strong, they would also last through a tornado, so you would be really safe.
