How do I add height to my pinewood derby car?
The blocks are too short for my liking. I want to make a realistic car. Most cars are a bit taller. Any suggestions on adding height to it and making it seamless?
Answer: Short means length.
You are talking about height.
In the rules, there is no height restriction, only length, width and weight restrictions.
I see one way to make your car taller. According to the rules:
Rule no. 6
The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block may be shaped any way that is desired.
Rule no. 20
Details such as the steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, plastic or lead molded pine
car parts and interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed
the maximum length, width, and weight specifications. All other designs must be of
pine wood material.
From rule 20, "All other designs must be of pine wood material."
That would allow you to add height to the car by adding more pine wood only.
Pine is available at any lumber yard.
If there is any house construction near you, you could ask the builders for a scrap piece, they will most likely give it to you for free.
You will need to saw the scrap to size, sand smooth the saw marks.
Apply standard Elmer's wood glue to the block of wood from the kit and the piece you are adding.
Clamp them together with "C" clamps, wipe off the excess glue that squeezes out with a damp rag, leave it clamped overnight and you will be ready to start carving the car body.
Remember the weight limit of 5 ounces, rule no. 1
Here is a link to the rules.

Okay, What car shape is most aerodynamic and how fast do PINEWOOD DERBY CARS go?
Answer: We've seen square blocks beat aerodynamic shapes.
The wheels are the most important. Work on the wheels. Make the nails (axles) positively smooth. Remove the burrs off of the axles and use liberal amounts of graphite and spend hours working it into the hubs.
If everything else falls within the guidelines....it's all in the wheels....

What is the effect of types of wood on the speed of PINEWOOD DERBY CARS?
I am not in boy scouts I am in the science fair and that is my question if you have any links to places that may help please post them
Answer: As a previous answer stated, different woods (and even different pieces of the same type of wood) have different densities and thus different weights and may affect speed accordingly. But if your underlying question is about the impact of materials on speed, your selection of wood is minimal compared to other factors. Since there is a maximum weight allowed for cars your choice of wood would not materially affect your car's speed as much as just buying the regular pinewood kit and using lead stick-on weights to reach the maximum weight (which would also give you the flexibility to place the weight where you wanted it - front, back, center, etc.).
One factor that has a far greater impact on overall performance is making sure the axles are square to the body of your car, because, to paraphrase Jonnie Cochran, if your wheels ain't square, you ain't going nowhere. If your axles are perfectly square to the car body your wheels will turn smoothly and not slow your car down by jumping up and down or wiggling back and forth across your lane.
Another important facter is the "freeness of spin" of your wheels. You can sand the axles and use graphite power for reduced friction.
I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but in the grand scheme of things, wood type does not have a great impact on car speed.

why does everyone think this about PINEWOOD DERBY CARS?
they think the heavier it is the faster it goes but according to the laws of gravity weight doesnt matter in falling speed and according to the laws of inertia the lighter sonething is the faster it speeds up and the faster it slows down but its not a race to see how far it can go
Answer: My kid always won because we made his car as heavy as possible.
I would weigh it in, and if it was underweight, I'd nail a few carpet tacks into the underside for more weight. I also kept his car as long as possible. A longer car gives the center of gravity a little boost higher, adding a hair more to the downward momentum.
It also helps to make sure that your axles are as straight as possible, and lubed up with graphite. A crooked axle makes the car wobble or drag to one side, slowing it down by friction.

Why do heavier PINEWOOD DERBY CARS go down the track faster than lighter ones?
I thought this went against a law of gravity, that everything is affected by gravity at the same speed except for considering air resistance. Pinewood derby cars are shaped the same and should have the same air resistance.
Answer: It all has to do with inertia - think about it. You're not dealing with gravity so much as rolling resistance and the tendency for a body in motion to stay in motion. More mass, same resistance = more velocity.

Do PINEWOOD DERBY CARS really need added weights?
I raced Pinewood derby cars when I was a kid, and it was always assumed that the heavier the car, the faster it was - it was just kind of an understood rule.
However, Ive recently thought about it, and I dont know if extra weight is actually a good thing to have. Since, according to the laws of science, everything falls at the same rate, wouldnt the weight of the car do nothing for it? And if so, wouldnt it be better to have less weight so theres less friction on the wheels? The only thing I can think of that extra weight would cause would be more inertia, which would be a bad thing, because it would take longer to start rolling.
All those things, if Im right, would conclude that its actually best to have the lightest car possible, to have less inertia and less friction. Im not sure, however, if Im right. Can anybody give me a definitive answer?
P.S. If you give an answer, please have it be based on actual science or personal experience - NOT just what you think would happen. Thanks.
Answer: The weights added to your pine wood derby car give it additional kinetic energy. The heavier the car, the easier it is for it to overcome the friction of the wheels at the axles and the track. For example all the things being equal a loaded truck would pick more speed going down hill than an empty one. Inertia would not be a factor on the start because the car would not be moving. This would only come into play at the end of the track and would not affect the race out come. I've read that aerodynamics don't make any difference with objects this size. I still thing a sleek shape can't hurt. The key to a winning car is weighing the maximum weight allowed and well lubricated axles and straight wheels.
Good luck and hope this is of some help.

Can anyone give me suggestions on building a great pinewood derby car?
Last year was our first year doing a pinewood derby and our car didnt fair so well. This year I would like it to be better but need some help on how to make a great car? Any ideas from experiance??
Answer: I haven't done a pinewood derby in years! How fun! I'm assuming that all the cars are weighted the same. So, the best thing you can do is to take your clues from fast automobiles: aerodynamics! You want your car to have as little friction of air on it as possible, so that it just cuts right through and isn't slowed down. Making a pointy front end, keeping the body super smooth (Sandpaper that thing down as smooth as you can, using every grit of paper, workinf from the most coarse to the finest grain), rounding out all the sides. Think of a bullet or a drag racer. Do a bit of a search on aerodynamics on the web, and I bet you'll find plenty! Good luck!

Where to add weight on a Pinewood Derby Car?
When you have to add weight on a Pinewood Derby Car would it be faster with the weight near the front, in the middle, or rearwards on the car?
Answer: If you put the extra mass in the back of the car instead of the front, it is strategic to do this, because the bouncing of the rear of the car is less extreme and less sudden for zones of what engineers call "positive curvature".
Positive curvature...imagine that when the road is "smiling" its curvature is positive. The transition out of a downhill to a flat is a positive curvature.
You will find more positive curvatures that matter than negative curvatures on the pinewood derby track.
By putting the extra mass in the rear, you will accelerate the extra mass LESS as it bounces in to the positive curvature. Plus, the bouncing of the front of the car and elasticity of the car will give a good delay to deliver the vibration to the rear, thus damping the vibration experienced by the rear.
By letting the extra mass vibrate less, you have a lot lower of amplitude stress cycles of the axles, and correspondingly a lot less high bearing friction cycles.
What you do need to ensure though, is that the combined center of mass of the entire vehicle including the chassis, the human occupant, and the extra mass...you need to ensure that it lies BETWEEN the wheels, and never behind the rear axle or in front of the front axle. If you let the center of mass do such, then you will tip the car during operation.
