Would a PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES religious beliefs affect your chances of voting for him/her?
I am curious to see if a Presidential candidates religious beliefs affects the chances of people voting for him/her. If your favorite 2012 presidential candidate had a different religion, like atheism or judaism, but the same political stances, would you be less likely to vote for him/her? All responses are welcome.
Answer: I believe a candidate's religious choices are their own business. They only concern me to the extent that they will inform Presidential political action.
So, a president who has x religious beliefs AND believes in separation of church and state does not concern me.
A president who has x religious beliefs AND believes that these ought to override US founding father principles, that I care about.
And "religious beliefs" is a large tent and covers a wide spectrum of individual beliefs. So, I would not rule out someone simply for being any particular religion.

Ive seen dozens of t-shirts for sale on CafePress with modified images of the Presidential candidates. Is it ok to use their image and likenesses in this way? I always thought if you used someones face on a product you owe them some sort of royalty or you need to contract to use their likeness.
Answer: You can use images/art of US political figures for profit at Cafepress or in another venture without owing the political figure royalty. However, as far as photos go the person who took the photo has the rights/ownership of the given image. So you would need to take your own photo yourself or get permission from the person who took the image if you want to use it for commercial purposes. The only issue is that some people like Arnold Schwarzenegger who was an actor who became a politician. You can sell products with him now but if he leaves office they in theory you would need to stop selling these products. Also, when in doubt about any of these things you really should contact a trademark/copyright attorney just to be sure.

Do any of the PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES have a long term energy plan?
Both Presidential candidates want to invest more money for researching alternative forms of energy. What will the research do for the USA?
Al Gore proposed his energy plan, but we will not "spend our way to the Jetsons lifestyle." Al Gores energy plan is a long-term plan though.
Do any of the Presidential candidates have a long term energy plan?
Answer: Yes.
Senator Obama believes that America must commit to a new national energy policy focused on improvements in technology, investments in renewable fuels such as wind and solar power, and greater efforts in conservation, efficiency, and waste reduction. Shifting from our current investment and consumption practices to this new direction will be one of the great leadership challenges in the coming decade.
With the Department of Energy telling us that U.S. demand for oil will jump 40% over the next 20 years and with countries like China and India adding millions of cars to their roads, the price of oil is approaching a breaking point.
In addition to the high economic costs of our foreign oil dependence, the current consumption of fossil fuels has threatened the future health and well-being of not only our citizens, but our natural resources and air quality as well. Investments in cleaner and more efficient energy technologies must play a central role in mitigating these threats to our health and our environment.
Recognizing the importance of energy security to national and economic security, Senator Obama has proposed the creation of a Director of National Energy Security in the Office of the President. This position, akin to the National Security Advisor, would oversee and coordinate all administration efforts on national energy security and policies.
In the 109th and 110th Congress, he joined with Senator Lugar to introduce the American Fuels Act to increase domestic production, distribution, and end uses of biofuels. Among other improvements, the American Fuels Act would expand the manufacture of ethanol-capable vehicles, offer tax credits to spur cellulosic fuel production, require clean-fueled transit buses bought with federal dollars, and provide incentives to ethanol plants to invest in E-85 blending equipment on their premises.
In January 2007, Senator Obama joined Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa in reintroducing the Biofuels Security Act, which calls for 60 billion gallons of renewable biofuels in the nation’s vehicle fuel supply by the year 2030. Senator Obama also authored legislation with Senator Cochran, the Alternative Diesel Standard, to require 2 billion gallons of alternative diesels - - including agriculture feedstocks such as biodiesel - - as part of the 40 billion gallon national diesel pool.
As the author of the Fuel Economy Reform Act, Senator Obama has worked to gain bipartisan support for an innovative approach to raising automobile fuel efficiency standards (also known as “CAFE” standards) and break two decades of inaction and deadlock on reforming fuel economy laws.
Oil companies are enjoying record profits while consumers are suffering from record high gas prices. In the 110th Congress, Senator Obama has introduced the Oil SENSE Act to eliminate unnecessary tax breaks to the oil industry. A version of the bill was passed by House of Representatives in January 2007.
In the 109th Congress, Senator Obama sponsored legislation, the FILL UP Act, requiring oil companies that made at least $1 billion in profits in the first quarter of 2006 to invest at least 1% of the their total reported first quarter 2006 profits into installing E-85 pumps.

Why do we allow the PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES to pick their vice presidents without any input from the people?
Why do we allow the Presidential candidates to pick their vice presidents without any input from the people? We get stuck with whomever the Presidential candidates decide to pick and the VP could potentially be the next President. This makes absolutely no sence!
Answer: They need someone they trust. In the very beginning, the person who finished 2nd got to be the VP. Could you imagine that in this case. Do you think the Pres would trust the VP?

How are the PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES for each party chosen?
There are essentially 5 GOP Presidential candidates, and 3 Democrat candidates. How is it decided which ones will be the nominees for president and vice-president for each party? What happens if neither party can decide by the time the Conventions roll around?
Answer: Every time there is a primary in each state (or a caucus) that state awards a certain number of delegates to the candidates depending on how they did in the primary or caucus. In some states, it's winner take all, in some states there is some proportional distribution of delegates, in some states only SOME of the delegates are awarded based on the primary/caucus, and the rest are awarded by the STATE convention (held long before the national convention, don't worry.)
In the past many years, we always knew who would be the candidate for each party based on the number of delegates. I don't think there has been an "open" convention (one where the candidate wasn't known before hand) since 1972. At the convention, they hold a symbolic vote for the nominee for president for that party. Because the number of delegates for each candidate is known ahead of time, there is no question how this vote will go.
However, before 1972, if a candidate wasn't chosed on that first vote (called the "first ballot") then the convention had to hold a "second ballot". In a second ballot, delegates DON'T have to vote for the person they were chosen for. They can vote for whomever they want! Then you have a really interesting convention, let me tell you!
I watched the 1968 convention, when there were still big issues to be decided at the Democratic convention (not to mention the protesters in the streets!) I remember the fight about whether to seat the Mississippi delegation and WHICH Mississippi delegation to seat! I remember in the 1972 election the convention where they couldn't decide who got the California delegates, and so which slate of delegates could vote at the election.
Hooo boy, it can get interesting. But these things have been so carefully managed lately that stuff like this just doesn't happen anymore!
But, given the disarray of the Republican party this year, ANYTHING is possible!!!! (Maybe this is just wishful thinking! I'd like to see them crash and burn!)
