Can i substitute spinach for ARUGULA?
I have been to three different stores and a farmers market looking for Arugula with no luck!
This is for a goat cheese pasta recipe with Arugula and tomatoes....will spinach work?
Answer: In stores near me, Arugula is not with the lettuce--it's with the specialty organic produce. And it's pricey--about $4 for 5 ounces! (I'm growing it in my garden this year.)
Substitute spinach, but add some extra black pepper to make up for it. Rest assured, your dish will still be delicious.

Can I substitute baby Swiss chard for baby ARUGULA?
I want to make a flavored mayo recipe with veggies from my garden. The recipe calls for baby Arugula, but I dont have much out there. Can I use some Swiss chard instead? I figured since both veggies are a little bitter, it would work. What do you think? TIA!
Answer: You can, though the flavor will be a little different. Arugula has a peppery flavor. I would think that if you used a vegetable that you like, the flavored mayo would be delicious.
I've used many different herbs to flavor mayo. Tarragon is a great one, as is dill, marjoram, and basil. I also like to add in some roasted garlic. Oh, great. Now I'm hungry!

i went to the market to buy basil to make pesto, but i ended up grabbing the Arugula instead. now i dont know what to do with it. its basically just sitting there in the fridge..
does anyone have any recipes that they enjoy and love to share them? thanks!
Answer: I had the simplest dish (and so unforgettable) in an Italian restaurant that I have managed to re-create at home quite easily. The sharp taste of the Arugula and parmesan flakes holds against the juiciness of a simple steak.
The Arugula is lightly dressed in simple olive oil and vinegar dressing, seasoned with salt and pepper. It is topped with slices of perfectly grilled, perfectly tender beef fillet that is seasoned so simply with olive oil, salt and pepper such that the flavour of the meat stands out. Everything is topped with parmesan flakes. I guess quality of meat and oil would spell the difference. I hope you try and enjoy this - perfect for sharing too.

Any luck planting bok choy and ARUGULA seeds in July?
I realize that bok choy and Arugula are happiest in cool weather, but I was wondering if anyone has had any success planting these seeds this time of year, and any advice as to keeping the plants from overheating (and thus bolting).

How do liberals afford ARUGULA, Volvos and life in SF or NYC if they dont work?
Even if theyre on welfare, welfare wouldnt enable you to have a Volvo, a diet full of Arugula from Whole Foods, an apartment in NYC or SF, season tickets to the opera, regular attendance at foreign film festivals and subscriptions to the Nation or Mother Jones.....I thought libs didnt work and depended on conservative real Americans for sustenance or is this another idiotic invention by right wingers who dont have the intelligence to see through the likes of Sean Hannity or Ann Coulter?
Answer: It’s just a talking point for extremists. Obviously, liberals work. This is why conservative states need more federal cash than liberal states do. The libs sort of bail out conservative states every year. They also tend to lead conservative states in education.
Texas, for example, has the highest percentage of drop outs, the highest percentage of minimum wage jobs, the highest percentage of uninsured, the highest levels of toxic dumping, high poverty rates, etc.
Righties just can’t understand the simple concept of empathy. They feel that because liberals care about people who are suffering or unemployed, that they themselves are. Righties don’t feel things like compassion, with the exception of the compassion they feel for the top 1%.

What could be laying eggs on my ARUGULA?
I noticed today many black eggs looking spots on multiple Arugula leaves. I havent had any success with google. Are they bad? Good? What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ok so it appears to be frass. It makes sense because ive seen a few little green catepillars previous days. I compared to a few pictures online. Now the question is...what do I do? Do I spray it off? Wipe it off or just leave it?
Answer: Do a google search on caterpillar frass. Frass is bug poop, and they produce more poop than eggs. If they fall off of a dry leaf easily, they probably aren't eggs. Eggs tend to be laid in clusters, and they tend to be in hidden spots.
You're doing the right thing by figuring out what they are before spraying poison. If they are eggs, don't assume they are a pest; they could be a predatory insect that eats pests.
The best pest control for Arugula is light frost. It is easier to grow in early spring and late fall, depending on your climate.

What is a good recipe for an ARUGULA (Rocket) Salad?
I am hosting a gourmet type dinner party for friends. I love Arugula and would like to make a salad with it. Nothing too weird though.
Answer: Here's what I make:
Loads of Arugula
Fresh sliced strawberries
Pumpkin Seeds
Crumbled Gorgonzola Cheese
Vanilla Vineagrette
To make the dressing, simply mix olive oil, balsamic vinegar, some vanilla extract, and mixed italian seasonings. Let set 15minutes to overnight.
If the strawberries aren't looking too good at your local market, any berry (especially blueberries) would taste great in this salad. If no berries look good, substitute dried cranberries, dried blueberries, or dried cherries.

What can I substitute ARUGULA with thats not green?
Try as I might, my 5 year old refuses to eat any herbs or vegetables that are green. Even while watching Food Network, shell love a dish until she sees peas, or green beans, or parsley. Then shell say yuck and doesnt like it anymore.
I know Arugula has a peppery taste, and I really want to try it, but we dont believe in making a separate dish or meal for our children just because one doesnt like something.
So, what else can I use?
She still gets served the green stuff, so shes not being deprived of the opportunity of eating it. But if anything green is mixed into the food, she wont even touch it. She could find peas hidden in the meatloaf even if she were blindfolded.
Answer: You might try raddichio which is purple and soft:
http://images.google.com/images?q=raddichio&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi
Other non-green salad fixings that she might be able to stomach:
- cucumbers with the skin peeled off
- zucchini with the skin peeled off
- califlower
- roasted red, yellow or orange peppers
- mandarin oranges
- baby corn
- marinated artichoke hearts
- sliced apples
- sliced pears
- nuts
- jicama
- melons
- roasted eggplant
- sliced shallots
- turnips
- peaches
- dried cranberries
Does she not like green things because she thinks they are bitter? Maybe she would like spinach or green beans if they are sweetened.
Heck, even George Herbert Walker Bush in his 60s or 70s refuses to eat broccoli. Someone tried to make me eat things when I was 4 or 5 years old. I still remember it and I still won't eat them.
