Where can I find a Cane CORSO at a good price in Virginia?
I have been looking for a Cane Corso, for a lil while now. I know how much they cost, but im trying to find one for like $800 or less with papers lol. i know its hard to find but i have found a few but they are on the west coast........... and im on the east. But no matter im going to have to pay $400 or better to get it shipped. So im asking for help now if there is anyone with information where i might can find one on the east coast that might have one.
Answer: There's a breeder in Dayton, Ohio. That's not too far from you.
Always go to check out the parents and housing conditions though.
Some ppl will breed these poor dogs for the money and money alone.
Keeping them caged all the time, even inbreeding which ultimately results in unhealthy pups.
You can get a good price if you sign a spay/nurturer contract.
*Also, try going to google or yahoo searches and punching in "Cane Corso breeders in Virginia"

What age should my Cane CORSO be to get his ears cropped?
I have a male Cane Corso. I have read that their is an option to leave there ears natural or to crop them. But I have heard from other people that there ears should be cropped to avoid ear problems, and that their ears are very sensitive. I dont know how true that is. But I dont want him to have to do it if he doesnt need to. I am sure its pretty painful. But if he needs to when is the cut off age to get their ears cropped. Some one told me 3 to 4 months.
Answer: I have 2 Corsos at home (as well as 2 Dobes). ALL are cropped/docked, I'm sure that will make me unpopular with some people in this "group" but too bad, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Corsos have a shorter crop than a lot of breeds (Dobes included) so the ears can be cropped at a later age than other breeds but I would not recommend past 6 months of age. It is definitely your choice whether to crop or not crop. If you don't feel strongly that you want a crop, I would not do it, it's easier to leave them natural and you'll probably have a better reaction from the general public for an uncropped Corso!!
For the record Corsos are accepted into AKC's miscellaneous class ( as of July 1, 2008) with full AKC recognition in 2-3 years. If you want look at www.caneCorso.org there are LOTS of pics of Corsos both with cropped and natural ears. Hope this helps!!

What are the biggest behavioral problem in Cane CORSO dogs?
To anyone who has ever owned or had experience with a Cane Corso (aka Italian Mastiff), what was the biggest behavioral problem you experienced with them? And what are the biggest challenges when owning one? Also, on a scale of one to ten, how destructive are they when left alone?
Answer: While some are quite mellow, gentle and sweet, they seem to be generally sharp in nature. They require extreme socialization; they're very protective and thus tend to be very wary of people, and don't always get along with other dogs. They're challenging and will try to out-think you. They require firm, consistent, patient, calm, benevolent leaders who know what the heck they're doing. I don't own one, so I will quote friends:
- My last boy was a Cane (and the first mastiff I ever owned) and he totally hooked me on the breed. He was actually very mellow and had almost the same personality that Rosie, my French girl, does. I think the breed gets the 'tough dogs' rap mostly because they are underrepresented and the few that are out there make a point of saying how 'tough' the breed is. For my part, Gabe was a bit stubborn and independent as a youngster but, especially as he got older, he developed into a total marshmallow. He could be a bit standoffish with strangers, but mostly in the "I'm going to ignore you until you go away" mold. Not a mean bone in his body.
- I know a Cane Corso who a GIANT pain in the butt sucky dog lol BUT no one would dare go in his house if the owners werent home. He will defend his property. This is a breed trait. He is a really lovely dog, muscle tone and his nature is very friendly when his owners are there.
- My nephew has a beautiful brindle Cane Corso who will not warm up to strangers and is quite intimidating. Her temperment is the exact opposite of my Bella who doesn't know a stranger.
- Capri would have a very high possibility of becoming "aggressive" is she was not trained properly. This is why I now fully understand and appreciate our breeders demand through cntract to put her through no less than 2 classes before we can gain her papers. Seeing how she started out actually scared me a bit. ... Carpi had food "aggression" ... I'd hate to know where it could have gone if it wasn't nipped in the butt so early. The she tried to seriously intimidate me with teeth and a snarl when the dish washer accidently bumped her in the butt while eating ... Before she used to growl at the site of the cat or if anyone came "too" close. After that barrier was torn down her growls to touch or petting have been the last thing were tackling. ... She is wonderful and very strong willed, which I love as it poses many positive traits in her, and an amazing dog but when I look at her bad days I can usually have myself to blame because every time I realize that days she gets her stubborn streaks are when I fail to be consistant and get "easy on her." I told my boyfriend the other day, after realizing this problem that I am sure that the only time we can become "easier" on her won't be until she is fully mature and fully accepts her place in our pack. I constantly remind myself of an article I read on the Cane Corso breed that reads, "One day of inconsistentcy with a Cane Corso will put you back five." I love the motto as I see it's truths now. ... After noticing the confidence this pup had at 9 weeks in controling everything is why I chose to work with her in these manners and they have worked out better than I could have imagined. Some dogs( regardless of breed) are just more stubborn than others and that's my girl. Yes, certain breeds are more inclined to these temprements but that dosen't mean that all of them will be stubborn. There are breeds that are known to be very docile but every now and then you will get a little spit fire. Some of the docile toy breeds have hellions simply due to how they are raised. When they're babied and put on throwns (like so many are) is no wonder they think they run things.
- Not laid back, not mellow. They sound like the temperment of a pitbull in a Mastiff sized body. Keep in mind this is not necessarily a bad thing, we absolutely love our Pitt, they are still a very loving protective dog that will gaurd his family. *edited to add* Pits are not an agressive dog on their own. They are trained to be or not trained to be mellow. They are just FAR FAR higher energy animal than a mastiff. Ours is also FAR more inquisitive than our mastiff, he is always the first one checking out something new. They absolutely MUST have leadership and training to be a stable family animal though. Do ALOT of reading about the very best and the very worst case scenario for the Cane Corso, then hope you land somewhere in the middle.
- Our 6 yr old Cane Corso has always been a fantastic dog...very loving and great with kids. However, he has always been very protective of my husband and more recently me. ...
Since the birth of our daughter four months ago, he is not himself. He often appears on edge and nervous when she is crying or showing signs of excitement (especially when her arms and legs move fast). Three or four times he has "snapped at her"...never hurting her but snapped.

How often should I exercise my Cane CORSO?
I just wanted some small suggestions from people who might have the breed or be very familiar with the Cane Corsos. Yes, i have done a ton of research on them but i want to know from personal experience what people have found is a good amount/proper amount of exercise for them. Currently my Cane Corso is 4 months old but I want answers and suggestions any where from 4 months all the way through adulthood on an adequate amount of exercise. Thanks!
Answer: We have two Cane Corso's. One male and one female. They are 18 and 17 months old. We do everything the Cesar Millan way and have fantastic dogs. They are eager to please and are very happy, stable dogs because they know we are the "pack leader". Exercise is the most important thing with any dog so i am happy to know other Corso owners like you want whats best for these wonderful dogs. You need, at the very minimum, 30 minutes of controlled walking in the morning and in the evening. Our dogs love the treadmill in the winter when we don't want to walk them in the cold. The amount of exercise can also depend on how your puppy spends it day. Is your puppy free to run or is he in a crate. The best investment you can make for you and your puppy is to go to Cesar Millan's website and order some of his dvd's. These dogs are different than other dogs and need to be handle by a confident "pack leader". If not they will think they are in charge and then you will have big problems, especially if your dog isn't exercised enough. We have experience with Cane Corso's from puppy to mature adult's of 4 to 5 years and have also raised a Fila Brasileiro. Being the pack leader is number one on your list and adequate exercise is the second. Our Corso's are on the raw meat and bone diet also. Dry kibble or canned pet food doesn't come into our home. Our dogs have been eating raw for years and are so incredibly healthy that people comment on how beautiful their coat and teeth are. Lots of info on line about the raw diet. Shirley's Wellness Cafe was a big help to me when i started my dogs a raw. Good luck and enjoy that puppy!

Is it necessary to cut the ears of a cane CORSO?
Im getting a cane Corso in a day or two, and Ive been hearing from people that you DO have to cut it and others say its just a choice. I like it when it hangs because it looks less scary lol.. but are there negatives if I live them down, or is it necessary to cut them.
Answer: No. Unlike tail docking or dewclaw removal, which can prevent painful and potentially costly injuries that may result in amputation later in life, ear cropping is purely cosmetic. It was originally done in fighting dogs, guard dogs, and some hunting breeds so that the dog's opponent couldn't grab an ear and cause a painful, bloody injury. Before the discovery of antibiotics, such an injury could get severely infected and potentially even eventually turn septic and prove fatal. But with the discovery of antibiotics, even if a dog is working in such a way that an ear injury is possible it is no longer potentially life-threatening.
There are no negatives to not cropping. Some people believe that floppy ears are more prone to ear infections and that cropping reduces the incidence of ear infections. But I can assure you as a vet assistant I see plenty of dogs with upright or cropped ears that still get frequent, recurring ear infections. And I have seen some floppy-eared dogs that have never had a single ear infection. If you get into the habit of cleaning your dog's ears on a weekly basis, it isn't generally an issue regardless of what kind of ears your dog has.

What is the differeence between the American and the Italian Cane CORSO?
I have heard there are two different types of Cane Corso. The American Breed and the Italian Breed. So I just want to know the differences, if there are any. Also I am going to get a male. Are males or females better?
Answer: There is a slight difference. The Italian lines tend to be smaller and have more of a boxer type face. The American lines tend to be bigger with more pitbull looking faces. Some breeders cross the American lines with the Italian lines to get the best of both. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, it just depends what you are after. They all share the same lineage and hale from Italy but the Americans have bred for bigger stock. Just buy from a breeder who health checks their dogs because Corso's are very prone to hip and joint problems. Epilepsy is also common in some lines so do your research. Corsos are wonderful and very even tempered dogs. They are not as dog aggressive or prey driven a some other breeds like pitbulls and dogos. They wont go out looking for a fight but typically they wont back down if another dog initiates a scrap. My Corsos accept anyone that I accept. They are extremely friendly and social dogs and this is very typical. But if they sense I am uncomfortable or don't like some one then watch out. They seem to instinctively know when to be protective but would never actually bite unless absolutely necessary. They are exellent with children when raised with them. The only issue is their size and they can easily knock a chld ove unintentially. My dogs are extremely gentle with my two toddlers. That said, no dog should be left unsupervised with a child. I also until recently had a 7 pound malti-poo and my Corsos got along great with him. Never any aggression shown. They need a firm hand and lots of socialization but are easier to handle than other dogs of their stature. Males tend to be more dominant in nature. If you haven't had a dominant breed before I would suggest a female. But males if neutered can be just as good a pet.

Why is the cane CORSO a dangerous dog breed?
Why do people think that they are a dangerous dog breed. I can say it isnt because of their large size because look at the st. brenard and the bull mastiff they both are nice dogs. but y do people label the cane Corso as a mean and dangerous dog?
Answer: for the same reasons ppl misunderstand the APBT or Rotties, or Dobies.
ignorance, myth and down right lies.
a cane Corso "scares" some ppl because it has a "bully like" appearance. and right now APBT (pit bull type dogs) are the biggest "boogie man" kind of dog right now w/all the BS about them spreading like wildfire. ANY dog that has a "bully breed" appearance is feared.
it's ridiculous.

I had an English Mastiff in the past and was thinking of getting a Cane CORSO. Any comments on that breed?
I have dominant breed training experience from my English Mastiff, but I realize the Cane Corso is a bit different. Can anyone share some experiences with this breed? Pros/cons? I have a 2 yr old who is around 2 large goldens and has learned to respect them. Besides the obvious small child advice, does anyone have some insight on this breed?
Answer: Compared to the Cane Corso, the English Mastiff is a pile of jelly. (Ironically, I'd say that's what my English Mastiff resembles at the moment, sleeping as he is.)
They aren't just "a bit different." In fact, Corso and EM owners I know describe them as being opposites. ("Polar opposites," to be specific.) Unlike the EM, Corsos aren't at all laid-back and mellow. They have high prey drives, an insanely exaggerated instinct to protect and way more energy. As such, they require a whole lot more exercise and mental stimulation. They require a firm leader.. I mean an unwavering, absolute, firm, benevolent, experienced leader.
Not to make them sound like bad dogs, they're perfectly lovely. Yanno. In the right families. With an excellent lineage and as-close-to-perfect raising, socialization and training as possible, they're cuddlebugs within the family. And, every breed has its exceptions. Here's Garden, my favorite cat-lovin', gentle Cane Corso:

How to crop the ears of a cane CORSO?
the ears of a Cane Corso seem more pushed back then the regular croping of other dogs ears.
Is there any difference on how it is done to get this effect ? (pushed back Cane Corso style)
Answer: They are cropped shorter. If you have one, and are cropping his ears, your vet will know how to do it. Make sure the vet uses pain meds (lots of vets don't and they should). He will need them during recovery too. I have a Cane Corso and his ears were already cropped when I got him.
